I never considered getting a Jack Russell until I saw an adorable one at the rescue centre. I took him home and he has been the best dog ever. He is very comical and playful and has a lot of character. Like all Jack Russells, he is as stubborn as a mule and sometimes needs to be shown who is boss. He is also extremely loving and loves to cuddle up. If I am sitting watching TV, he will sit next to me, then cuddle right up as far as he can. He is totally adorable. I would only consider having a Jack Russell as a pet now. They are, by far, the best dogs for owners who can give them the time, attention and exercise they need.

Have owned dogs for the guts of 40 years and the two JRT's I have now are the best dogs I have owned. Fun, loyal, comical, easy care, dedicated and best of all loving. They are a challenge and need routine and life long reinforcement of training but that is worth every second it takes. The female in particular is very dedicated. Follows me everywhere. Sleeps between my legs every night, that is the wife's fault, is always on my lap while I am sitting. We have as they say these days " the complete Bluetooth connection" .

We got Miss Molly abt 4 years ago when she was a pup. God knows exactly what he’s doing...
My father passed away suddenly in 2019. In 2020 I lost 3 people in my family in abt 4-5 weeks. Then 2 others after that.
Miss Molly save me so much more than i coud save her! I have never had a dog that kicked my tears away as Miss Molly does.

Low shredders? Seriously, we don't have a single part of the house that isn't covered in hair. They are easy to train, use treats. Can have back issues. I wouldn't have a cat in the house with a jackie, regardless if they are brought up or not. High work rate with them, but are endlessly entertaining.

    Low shedder my ass XDD
My family got my little boy when I was 12. Now I'm 22 and he is 10.
Needs a lot of exercise but also sleeps a lot and doesn't have any destructive behaviours after the age of four. As a puppy he used to chew phones, remotes, library books and sleep in laundry basket. He also chewed a hole in our sofa and bit walls and table legs. I did most of his training as a child, but the only one who can recall him is my dad. He know plenty of tricks and is pretty smart.
Dog aggressive on leash and on our parents fenced yard but super friendly at the dog park.
Was a great dog with kids and even visited elderly.
    Very strong hunting instinct.
At the age of 8 he had three days of seizures, doctor said he had epilepsy, got medication, no seizures past to years and doctors are saying that the medication might not be needed anymore. But he started to have stomach problems around the same time, haven't found reason for that yet.
Mother is still alive, I think she is about 16 and father was put down at 17/18 years old.
He had short fur, semi smooth, sheds a lot, muscular, short strudy legs.
We walk at least 3hours a day and do puzzels and play, he wants a lot of attension and cuddels. Sleeps with me which made training easier? He listen me better than my siblings who havent slept with him. I'm also only person besides mom and dad who he will sleep with. Goes away if someone is crying, loves vanilla icecream and whipped cream (obvs doesn't get those).
About 5 years back my parents got another jackrussel but she had some abnormalities with her body. Her ears don't stay down and she got in her back legs five toes instead of four (like thumbs that are at front, our first russel didn't have those at back feet) but they never grew properly. She has some aggressivness in her which is why my dog lives with me on the days I can keep him (I'm a student with long days, don't want to live dog with possible seizures home alone for 9 hours plus he gets more exercise at my parents). She is also scared of everything and didn't receive proper training.
Had an accident where her jump landed badly and her left side of body got paralized, but with physical therapy she regained almost full movement. Had bladder issues that got worse after the accident. Also severe allergies, before we got her medication she would scratch herself to until bleeding. Both dogs chaised and tried to eat bees. This lady eats anything and everything while my little boy is a picky bitch. She doesnt really show pain, our older dog has always been a drama king. She too loves to chaise things, mostly balls and frisbees, pretty good with kids but can't really calm down. Easily bored and destructive, guarda people and is glued to my mom. Doesn't like walks but likes hikes, excellent recall, super inteligent if not for short attention span and getting easily bored.
Long legs, slim body, long coars hair, more curling tail than our older dog.
I love Jackrussels but they are a lot of work. My boy is a blessing with how calm he is and he is super great at apartments (doesn't bark at noises or doorbell and does well in the city) while the younger one needs to be at the house in countryside with big yard and not too many neighbours around.

Totally awesome dogs. We got our little guy as a pup and he’s been the best dog ever. I love GSD’s but this guy won me over. No problems at all with digging or chewing up the house, and I’m able to take him to the park off leash. Of course he gets a lot of high intensity play sessions and a long off leash walk in the woods daily. I’m retired so Cosmo spends very little time alone and I take him everywhere with me. He’s awesome with kids and all people. Even though he was highly socialized as a pup, he’s not great with a lot of dogs so introductions are done carefully.
If you’re considering a JRT keep in mind they do require a bit of stimulation, but they’ll help keep you active too. Definitely this guy is the most loving, devoted, and fun dog I’ll ever have and they’re very smart little problem solvers. If you have a little patience and a good sense of humor you cannot go wrong.

If I have to go to the shops. I cannot take her with me, because I have to leave her outside and I would not do that.

Jacks can be diff to train because they are very smart. Not for first time dog owners. I’ve had several and I love the breed but they are a difficult breed and require a lot of understanding and exercise with their human. They must be part of you life in every way. Not good with younger kids. They will not tolerate the “abuse” of a younger child. They are not good with cats or other small animals.

Just had to put down my female JTR this week 😢. She would have been 14 years old this coming March. Honestly o didn’t notice any getting old issues until the last 6 months - a year. Warning to all new owners these dogs are ACTIVE! Make sure you are prepared to take them out daily to play not just walk. Good thing is because of their size it does t require the same amount as a blogger breed. Throw the ball 10-20ft 10-15x twice daily. They are super fun and great hearty pets with very low maintenance. Like suggested, obedience training is a big recommendation. If you want a fog that just sits around while you watch TV this is not the breed for you. If you like non stop energy and don’t mind the daily task of taking them out to play ti the park then this dog is for you!

I have a female Jack and she’s freakin hilarious. She sleeps A LOT but when she’s awake, she chases wildlife in the back yard, plays with her toys and gets the zoomies. The only destruction she’s responsible for is eating 5 dog beds when she’s bored or mad. She’s a short hair and doesn’t shed much, HATES BATHS so we have to spell it out so she doesn’t know what’s coming. I’m her trainer and main contact but her favorite person in this world is my hubs who usually takes her for trips around the block in the truck or takes her to the rat rod shop while the club is building. For some reason she tries to bite mens pant legs when they walk by her but she’s never done it to a woman. I got no ideas about that. She’s great with other animals but tends to be a bully, a total badass monster in the truck when she sees other animals or people but a marshmallow up close and personal. She also has her own couch.

Help please anyone- I have a female neutered JRT 6yrs I absolutely adore her and all past and present fur babies- I got a beautiful Goldie now 3yrs, and she quietened down, for the energy levels of my JRT. I still wanted a male to make up my perfect family (I mourned for 5yrs for my GSD boy😢). I now have the cutest rascal boy, JRT 4 months old - they play and everything, however sometimes there is a fight between the 2 JRTs despite the age difference, whilst with my Goldie he gets on beautifully and she takes his side against my 6yr old JRT. I have started to show more attention to my 6yr old JRT (advice from a vet doc, long ago🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️!). I always thought a male and female would not fight or argue with each other in the canine kingdom? Can anyone help with my problem, I am really scared my male will grow big and the fighting worsening, do male JRTs fight with female JRTs (he will be castrated when he is a bit older for obvious health benefits), what can I do to ease their love together, my female JRT is very loving and was brought up by my now late Basenji and GSD???? Help please 💔

I have been around Jack Russel all my life, lovely dogs. In my experiance the common opinion is that you should not keep more than one as a pet unless they are same sex and raised together from pups, or one may kill the other, some people even say you should never leave 2 Jack Russels together unnatended.

In my experience "older" female JRT,s have a tendency to be quite bossy, especially around younger male JRT,s and do not have time or patience for them. While old male JRT,s have a tendency to become like whiny old men. Kinda bossy and wimpy at the same time. But yeah for the most part from what I have seen, unless they are befriended from an early age or a long way before they move in with each other, they have a tendency not to get along with other JRT,s in such closed spaces for too long.

We got a younger female and she turned to be aggressive and woudln't even try to read our boys body language trying to calm her down. She bit couple times with her jaws locking and after that they are onky together when watched and nobody can show attention to any of them too much or she will attack. We haven't found any other solution than to just have him live with me after I moved out, but bc of my school he needs to be couple of days a week back at my parents. Both are neutered and our male was really great with other dogs ao it came as a suprise to us

@@perpendicularmouse the females have a very strong prey instinct, they can be loving but we're bred for killing, rats and rabbits. When I was a kid we would go rabbit hunting with Jack Russells and ferrets, the dogs were friendly but we were terrified of the ferrets, one time one of our favourite Jack Russels "honey" got stuck in a rabbit den, took 2 days to dig her out, she was a savage.

To add…Jack Russells are EXTREMELY heavy shedders. The short coats are the worse.
Two getting along - two males often spell trouble. Male and female not so much.
History on name - the Westminster Dog Show / AKC added them in the 1990s and were sued by the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America which had a Trademark on the name. Settlement included they would not use the name Jack Russell in the future - hence AKC and Westminster use the name Parson Russell. You CANNOT register the breed as a Jack Russell with the AKC - only as a Parson Russell. The Jack Russell club of America is VERY protective of the breed - wanting to maintain the breed as a working dog and not a show dog.
I have had three Jacks - one lived to 19 and the second lived to 17 - the third is now 11 and acts more like a puppy than an 11 year old dog. Yes, not for the inexperienced dog owner, but for someone with experience with very smart, sometimes very stubborn dogs, and a good vacuum cleaner, they are great.

My female JR is a real handful, I can't take her anywhere, she hates any fast moving vehicles like pushbikes, scooters, skateboards, joggers fall into her list of hates too. We live on a cycle path so when she sees one coming she takes off like a bullet barking and snapping at their tyres . Her reputation has spread and many of them stop and walk or pick up their board and walk past us. Rats, cats and any other furry animals don't come into our garden anymore, she's terrible.
