  • There's nothing quite like a classic Schwarzkopf looping coaster which is why there are still so many of them in parks the world over, even though the last one (Thriller) was built in 1986. Like most the company's custom loopers, this coaster has been operating for over 40 years without being relocated. Another custom Schwarzkopf looping coaster that has been operating at the same park for that long is Mind Bender at Six Flags Over Georgia. Do you know which one of the two opened first?
    This Six Flags park is located near Dallas in Arlington, Texas.

    An oldie, but still a goodie. Way back in the day, part of the anxiety for this coaster was watching the track sway back and forth while you were standing in line to ride it. It was awesome in the early 80's. Glad this one is still here.

      That was exactly what scared me as a kid, this was my first “big” coaster haha

      She was awesome back in July 1999 as well, back when I first rode Shock Wave at age 28. Been in love with her ever since!
      She also pulls up to 5.9 G-forces in her double-loop section!

    Those two airtime hills after the loops are amazing in the back, out of the 171 coasters I’ve been on, they are some of the strongest airtime moments.

    This is the first looping roller coaster I went on as a kid back when I was 4 years old in 1985, and I still adore it to this day. 40 years old is definitely long in the tooth for a corporate theme park attraction, and I worry that its days are numbered every time I visit and see how short the lines are, but I continue to make sure I can enjoy it for as many rides as I can, and I hope it sticks around long enough for my own child to get to the height requirement to ride on it as well for her first looping coaster.

    Lowkey I always loved this ride more than Mindbender at Over Georgia, but now I think it’s finally getting the attention it deserves now that Mindbender has been neutered.

      This is an interesting proposition; I've been on Shock Wave more, it's in slightly better shape, and it retains its original loose brakes and train length, but I think Mindbender's layout, elements, and setting are better. It's closer since they messed with MB, but the alternative to messing with MB was losing it.

    My first coaster that had inversions. I rode it the year it opened, 1978, and many times since then. Short ride but great excitement and air time.

      One interesting thing about this ride is that the g-forces it pulls as it goes through the two loops ensure that you never feel like you're upside-down! From the riders' perspective, "down" is toward the track, NOT toward the ground.

    One interesting thing about this roller coaster is that its loops are almost round, rather than shaped like inverted teardrops. This fact means that this ride pulls 5 g's in said loops. I think that's just the right amount of g-force to make this a THRILLING ride, rather than hurt the riders! This ride just has the perfect amount of drop before the loops, as well as the loops themselves having just the perfect size. Not too big, and not too tight. See, on most looping roller coasters, the loops are shaped like inverted teardrops to cut down on the g-forces. This was one of the lessons learned the hard way with earlier loopers such as the infamously harsh Flip Flap Railway (which pulled 10+ g's!).

      The loops hit so many g's, and the two hills in the back send you out of your seat and into the moon. This thing doesnt look like much, but riding it is another animal. At least in the back

    I don’t get how this pulls the second most G forces in the world? Surely kingda ka would be allot more?

    • @GoudLoodje
      @GoudLoodje 10 месяцев назад

      Kingda Ka is fast and tall, but that doesn’t mean it’s also intense. It IS intense, but how intense a ride is is not decided by speed or height, but the way elements are shaped or something like how fast it accelerates if it has a launch. Kingda Ka accelerates very fast but the thing that makes THIS intense is the almost completely circular vertical loops, which because of their shape pull a lot of vertical G forces. On top of that the loops are very small compared to the coaster’s drop also making it way more intense, as the loop is way tighter than other loops on top of being circular

    I remember the shockwave and the early 70s it was in the same location. It did have the double loop. It did have the long ride up at the beginning. They did add more tracks though. I’ll just say I’m glad that it’s back but where is all the speed it was much faster back then

    • @philtll
      @philtll Год назад +1

      This is exactly the same layout and basically the same pacing it's always been, plus or minus 40 years of wear and tear. I've no idea what you mean by "more tracks".

    I’m so confused … physics aren’t my forte but HOW does this ride , 2 little small loops produce so many Gs ??? There are way more rides that go faster and invert was may. Than this … I’m lost

    • @theaviator8088
      @theaviator8088 Год назад

      The smaller the loop, the more G force. It’s faster than it looks (about 55 MPH at least) … also it traverses the loop at a very fast pace, (much faster than all other coasters) probably only about 2 seconds for the loop, coupled with them being quite small. The most g force on a roller coaster in the world is Tower of Terror at Gold Reef City, which pulls 6.3 gs while pulling up out of the vertical drop, without even having a loop or inversion. Other roller coasters that are bigger and faster have shallower loops so that the passengers are more comfortable. The smaller the loop, the more forceful it’s gonna be.

    • @JorgeMorales-xv6qx
      @JorgeMorales-xv6qx Год назад

      @@theaviator8088 yeah but how? 55 isn’t even fast
      Other coasters are dokt 65 averag 70 -90 mph even

    • @theaviator8088
      @theaviator8088 Год назад

      @@JorgeMorales-xv6qx The loop is just very small. 55 mph is not that fast you’re right, but the coasters that are faster generally have much larger loops with hang time, causing them to only be about 4 g because there is less centripetal force. This is a loop taken very quickly, pushing riders into their seats.

    • @theaviator8088
      @theaviator8088 Год назад

      It’s not about the speed, it’s about the size of the loop and how quickly it pulls up into the loop. There’s a backyard coaster in Ohio that is no longer in operation unfortunately called the Blue Flash. It’s very small and only reaches about 25 mph and is only 20 ft tall. It has a loop that is about 10-15 ft in height and pulls around 5 gs and almost causes whiplash. It’s all about the rate at which the coaster traverses the loop and how much centripetal force there is around the center of the loop.

    • @JorgeMorales-xv6qx
      @JorgeMorales-xv6qx Год назад

      @@theaviator8088 most big coaster with big loops , you said did 4gs
      How is it we can handle that? Is it only pulling those Gs for a few seconds or what? I thought a g force like that wasn’t good for us
