Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a state within a state with its own laws, rules and culture. It is a meeting place of East and West, where high-tech meets traditional lifestyles, skyscrapers meet fishing villages, and stately shopping malls meet chaotic floating markets. Historically a former British colony, Hong Kong is now a special administrative region of China, astonishing in its pace of progress.
Hong Kong is located on the southeast coast of China and consists of Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and 262 small islands of the South China Sea. Hong Kong Island is the center of the area, with an area of 80.5 km², of which 6.98 km² is territory reclaimed from the sea. There's nowhere else in the world like it: a city of millions on an area where there's simply no room for it. First of all, this explains the special charm of Hong Kong: a jungle of high-rise buildings towers here not only in the business center, but with few exceptions, everywhere.
For first-time tourists, Hong Kong surprises visitors by the fact that it is lined with highways that rest on high piles, rather than running along the ground. The roads also pierce through the mountains, overhanging beneath the straits and shading the city streets. The city-state is connected to the mainland by three tunnels under the Victoria Strait.
The Chinese name for Hong Kong is Xianggang, meaning "fragrant harbor. It's an epithet it's bestowed because of the booming trade in aromatic spices and incense along the island's coast. In the local dialects, the harbor's name was Hong Gong, and it stuck with the island in 1842.
Hong Kong is a city-state without a capital in the conventional sense. But given that there is only one city of the same name in the country, it is Hong Kong that is considered the capital of the state.
