I am poor and I can't afford to pay anything to listen to your podcast but just from the little glimpse you showed I want to say you are definitely not alone. I was horribly abused as a child and it ended up messing me up big time as an adult when my children were very young. I found out that I had dissociative identity disorder and have been living a good, quiet, peaceful life for a long time with the help of my husband, family and friends.

That is what love is - to take another’s well beingness, their goals and aspirations and needs as your own. (important distinction: not to the degree you forget your own. That would be co-dependency and unhealthy etc.) But to make another’s needs and happiness just as important to you as your very own is, to me, what Love truly is.

It takes a lot courage and strength to allow your self to talk about painful memories or painful events that should have never happened. It’s truly sad to see that ppl are still hurting children every day, when they are our most precious gifts from God. Hurting others is not the choice to make, get your self healed before you every decide to give a child a life they deserve with your love, kindness and teaching them how to treat others.
You guys have traveled the world and given your kids experiences most children will never know. And yet, the thing your beautiful little Dorothy wants is a BEST FRIEND. I don't know how anyone could watch this without getting choked up. You have an amazing family and although I'm not a member of your club to hear the podcast you referred to, I know you're both good parents and will do what it takes to help Dorothy acheive her goal.

This really hit me. I always watch these videos and dream of this lifestyle and the experiences the bucket list family share. It just goes to show that even if you think your life isn’t very unique or special, someone else might be dreaming of what you have. It really made me stop and appreciate my life exactly as it is.

Ofc they meet kids on their travels but those often speak different languages and they don’t stay for that long to actually make friends

Dorothy is brave enough to say out loud what we all really want in life. It doesn't matter where you are, what you do and how many things you own. The most important thing is love and friendship. People you spent time with, share good and bad moments. People like you guys. She already has the greatest parents and brothers. She is so loving and caring person and I'm 100% sure she will find a best friend for life ❤️

I would never want to diminish Dorothy's desire, there is nothing better than a sweet friend to share everything with, but sometimes as we age we realize that the brothers in the room down the hall have always been there as our biggest fan and most faithful companion.

I totally understand stand where Dorothy’s coming from. It’s happening to my 16yr old. We were a military family and we’ve moved 1 too many times. Now that we’ve settled in 1 place.. she has not “found “ that 1 person she can call her best friend that lives close to us. Her closest friend moved to FL and she got really sad. I realized later that our moving affected our 16yr old because she didn’t get to develop a solid friendship with anyone when he was still young. I know she wants that. I hope and pray she finds it and I hope your Dorothy does too.♥️

Countless children for generations have felt the pain of child abuse. You are not alone Garrett, my heart goes out to you. I know we have to heal ourselves, because no one else can really understand the heartache we went through. I guess I’m slow, because I still relive some painful memories and cry, at 71yrs old. It’s also why I chose not to have children. They bring in so much wisdom, it is amazing. They are such a gift, especially when they are allowed to fully express themselves. You and Jessica are amazing parents. God Bless your family to eternity and back. 🌈🥰💖
Uff… that hit me hard. I had a best friend for over 20yrs. We met back in middle school. She passed 2yrs ago, just a few months after my last baby and she never got to meet him. I miss her every single day! But those 20yrs of sharing your life with someone that knows you inside and out, every day was different conversations, and we supported each other through the ups and downs of life.
I have a 9 year old girl in VA who travels half the year and would love a bestie like Dorothy (she says if Dorothy can teach her a back handspring she’ll teach Dorothy how to make resin jewelry). Thank you as always for sharing - highlight of our weeks!

It’s hard to find a best friend when traveling a lot. You guys have to think about their well-being. Money cannot buy happiness and they’re only kids. Moving places a lot it will affect them mentally and emotionally. I am dealing with my husband right now. The family used to move a lot because of his dad was in the military. It is very sad my husband don’t have a best friend. I asked my husband of why he does not have a best friend and his answer was “we moved a lot and every time I found a friend we’re moving again”. Best friend it takes time to develop. I cried too when I heard her saying she wanted a best friend. Give them a normal life. Take care and stay safe.
All the traveling is amazing and a huge huge opportunity at their short age. I am sure she has a lot of awesome memories but yes children need that stability and want to be “normal”. Wake up, play, Go to school , have friends and just do the simple things that others do.

We moved from South Africa to Australia March 2020, and arrived just before Australia locked down. Dorothy although you don’t know my middle child Nina (9), you were her friend that carried her through months of lockdown, and no contact with friends. She laughed with you, was excited to see you every week, and talked about you all the time. You will make one amazing best friend to one lucky person!
I think it’s time to take a short extended break from traveling so Dorothy can turn one of her good friends in Hawaii into a best friend. Yes traveling is fun and educational, but this is something important to D. Put her needs ahead of traveling.

but then again, traveling is also important cause it's their job. there are at home for longer periods of time for a while now. They can still travel but shorter periods at a time. they've been away since summer now

Tears rolling down my face. Dorothy if you only knew. So many of us all over the world would love to be your best friend. You are so kind, thoughtful, loving, brave, talented and smart. Those qualities and many more you have, makes a best friend! I know traveling all over the world gives you so many opportunities to enjoy life. But perhaps Dad can cut the trips a bit so you can spend more time at home, school and finding real time with a friend. It’s human nature to crave community around you. Your traveling lifestyle is beautiful, and rare. There’s a reason so many of us crave to travel like this, and usually it’s to get away from community and build your self as an individual. But when you’re a kid, that’s all you’re doing! Building yourself as an individual. Sometimes it takes community and daily similarities to make traveling what it is.

Maybe take a break from travelling for a few years so the kids can actually make friends. Just travel for 6 weeks in summer and on some holidays. It's really important for Dorothy to have friends and a routine at her age. She's the sweetest child. I bet they would love to have a pet as well.

Garrett I felt your sincerity and I to cried along with you, I too have a horrible experience with abuse, and know that God had a purpose for us to go through all of the things we did. In return we try harder not to give our children anything to go through the type of life struggles we endured. We tend to make purpose in everything for our children. With that being said you are a great father, friend and husband, because of all the things you have overcome!!! High five, and hugs..... Your awesome, keep up the great work!!!!
You have to remain in one place unfortunately to establish best friend status! I had a best friend who moved away when we were 9 - we use to write to each other for a few years after but that soon faded. A chance meeting by my sister we got in touch again and now with Facebook are regularly in touch - we are both 46 now that initial bond put us in good stead for life! Maybe just try staying put for next 6 months to help Dorothy xx
Hugs to Dorothy and as a mom/grandma it broke my heart to hear it yet I was so proud of her bravery for saying it. You will totally find that best friend! I haven’t seen the bucket list friend video but talking about any abuse is so very hard but healing. You were brave Garrett also by doing that and it can help others heal from their abuse.

I work with kids Dorothy's age and I can tell you that girls especially really need other girls their own age to be with on a consistent basis. It's awesome to watch them together. You are giving your kids so much with these adventures but I am glad you realize what you are taking away from them with your nomadic life style which is something you chose for them. I think you are awesome parents with a lot to think about.

I totally understand Dorothy, I didn't find a best friend until high school and it was really hard. I had people who were friends, but that best friend (or couple best friends) who I could go to for anything, I didn't have. She is such a sweetheart, I hope she finds her goal this year!

This life is sooo blessed and definitely inspirational but Dorothy’s New Years resolution does make me appreciate my very stable upbringing playing sports having friends and family as constants in my life. We weren’t rich, or travelled but our lives were rich with the people we grew up with and the experiences we had as a family. ❤️

Kids are so simple. They just want simple lives. I feel bad for Dorothy but I'm happy that her goal is now Garrett's goal.

That just goes to show that despite all of the amazing and wonderful experiences you’ve given your kids, all they really want is to play, have friends and make meaningful connections with peers. I get why you travel and it’s wonderful for the kids to be able to experience different cultures, but they’re missing out on childhood friendships and school. I feel for Dorothy I really do, I hope she gets some stability, some nice classmates and a bunch of neighborhood friends she can play and ride bikes with.
Very well said and stability is the correct word. Extensive travel experiences are amazing, but there is also the wonderfulness of what many would consider a classic childhood. Hard to make a best friend when frequently gone as the other little girl feels that loss too and ends up being best friends with someone else.

As someone who grew up in a family that always traveled, I can confirm that it not only makes finding a best friend hard at a young age, but it actually follows you through life where you either can’t seem to find friends or hold on to them. It puts the importance of family into perspective, but having a good friend is still so valuable.
My husband's family moved every year or so. Dad opened new locations for a company and once off the ground they moved to the next location. It wasn't until high school that he went to the same school 2 years in a row...dad stayed in that location permanently for hubby to play football through high school and college.
It made making an keeping friends impossible. This was pre internet and cell phone when long distance calling was expensive. It really affected his relationships 😔

Social peer bonding is super important for little girls especially. It's an evolutionary necessity since women are the resin in the composite structure of any group. They set the character and form the strongest bonds in a lot of cases. Those personal bonds let humans coexist and cooperate effectively.

I am glad that you will make this a priority because it really is important in a child's development.
Have you considered enrolling them into formal school? That is a great place to make best friends and join children's soccer teams. They could still have all that they really want and travel during holidays.
exaclty, going to school and interacting with other children often is definitely as important as the experiences they're having around the world
When they are in Hawaii they do go to school! It has just been the summer holidays so they were travelling lots
@@charlottesinclair9354 It is not summer in Hawaii right now. Schools have been open and children were and are learning throughout Q1 and Q2. Hawaaii Summer holidays are in June and July.

@@casualcruelty ah yes! I got confused since they referred to Summer on Safari and I live in New Zealand and think of Hawaii as close to us so having the same seasons but that makes sense! They talked about how they would be making big changes this year so I hope that means they will be staying at home a bit more for the kids!

With overtourism and climate change presenting challenges to our global community, I think this travel destination is more relevant than ever. As travelers, we should keep our footprints at a minimum, in order to best preserve the world’s cultural and natural treasures for generations to come.

I think we all can totally understand how times can feel lonely. Dorothy is a beautiful young lady and will get all that she manifests! Big props to Garrett and Jessica for acknowledging and prioritizing their children's needs, despite the money and opportunities. Family comes first!
though I understand having outside friends can be meaningful and important. For me and my family. I try really hard to implement that we ( our family) are our best friends. friends come and go, and people move. but we are here always.. and we should treat each other like we are the best friends in the world for the better. support, help, encourage, save..... it's one thing that I think has been lost and why people so many times look outside their families for that support. I am super happy you share that and that your relationship with you and your family is so open that she can communicate that.. That in itself is a blessing. just my two cent of my own perspective.
Had to pause this video to watch the one you posted on Bucketlist friends. Jess, the way you look at your life long partner, especially when he’s breaking down like that, I can see how much you love and adore him. And Garrett, as a transgender person I find it hard to be religious or have a relationship with God. But what you said about the love you have for Dorothy, Manilla and Cali really resonated with me. That that same love you have for them is how God feels about all his children, every single one of us. Including me, a trans person. They are so lucky to have you guys supporting them through the ups and downs in life.
I’m will Dorothy 100 Percent. I’m in 6th grade and I don’t have a best friend like other people in my class. Over the past year I felt like I lost everything. I lost two of the most important people in my life. And best friend. And my uncle. This year I’m now going to make it my goal to find a new best friend. This is the best time for Dorothy to make a best friend! I don’t know what I’d do without all my friends, but especially my best friend. We became friends in the 2nd grade, I was 7 and she was 8. We just celebrated 30 years in September. 🥰 Just be yourself, Dorothy and I know some special kid will be drawn to you because you are so special and kind and that makes the best kind of friend. 💗💗💗

Searching for it and finding people that might fit that gap in your life but at the end they are not the one is one of the most hurtful and devastating things in life!!! I know how it feels to not have a best friend, when I was 12 we moved to America all the way from Australia. It was hard having to go to a brand new school, I didn’t even know what a cafeteria was!
But with a little determination and bravery (which I know you have a lot of) I went out of my way and sat at a table full of other girls my age. They were all super nice to me and was amazed by my accent, tell anyone about how you’ve travelled all around the world and they will love you! And your amazing personality :)

I’m so excited to meet Dorothy’s best friend this year. They’re going to be the best best friends ever!
When I was little we moved around from place to place, never really calling one place home. I never had enough time to find a best friend. That is until one fateful winter in California. I was 12 and we moved from Portland Oregon to an RV park in San Dimas CA where I finally met my best friend! Funny thing is we never stayed there long, so when we moved away we decided that we would write letters to each other and call each other whenever we changed to a new location. Years went by of friendship but all the moves caused us to lose touch. Fast forward a few years later I was walking with my brother in Las Vegas airport and there she was! Best part her and my brother fell in love and got married and now we are 36 and 37 and not a day goes by that we don’t talk. Moral to my story is when that person who is meant to be her best friend will present themselves when the time is right!

Like you said Garrett due to your families current situation on traveling and all it's hard to hear your only daughter say she wants a best friend . I have two boy's and a daughter too . So I know more or less how Dorothy feels . But still in all you and your wife are two super OUTSTANDING parents . The love that's in your family is the greatest gift one can give to their family . Funny how I was always asking myself what kind of childhood do I need to give my child in order for him to become someone like you Garette. Never expected this answer (I haven’t heard the full story yet and I am sure you had mostly good parts to your childhood that have built you to the man that you are and I wish to hear more about those too) but this was a real surprise. I thought only perfect can make such a perfect parent and person as you are. But that makes it even stronger of course.
My 9 year old daughter Sophie keeps telling me how much she would love to be Dorothy’s friend! I keep telling her Dorothy would be lucky to be her friend. Praying for sweet friendship for you this year Dorothy!

You are incredible parents that have given your children immersive educational experiences that most children never receive and I’m sure you know this. It’s a trade off! I’d like to encourage you that you are also raising your precious gifts to be built in best friends! Your 3 are so close! What they share is rare and beautiful and a gift from God! They have lifelong friends in each other… yes being a little girl she’ll want a best friend who is female that she can talk girl stuff but most friends come and go for seasons of our lives but our siblings and parents are for a lifetime! ❤️

I remember my family traveling a lot because of my dad being in the military and all I wanted as a kid was stability to have a best friend. I loved the adventures but wished I could stay in one place to have a best friend for ever.... This took me back to those feelings.

I love that Cali is now big enough to come out surfing. Before you guys went on safari it was mainly just Garret, Manilla and Dorothy out on the ways but now it’s so wonderful that all of you can be out there together
I never had a best friend until high school and even then, I struggled with finding the right people to surround myself with. I’m sure Dorothy will find someone that makes her feel safe and happy, I think we all end up finding that person eventually.

I have a similar story and aha spiritual moment. Dorothy choked me up but what really choked me up was how Garett took her desires of her heart to his heart as God our father holds our desires of our heart to his.

I can relate to Dorothy so much in this video! My parents worked at a children’s home when I was a kid so I never had that one best friend, they were always either being reunited with their families or adopted.
I can relate to you as parents wanting this for your child. I’ve longed for my kids to make that one best friend. My daughter has found hers (at 9 years old) and we’re still waiting for my son to find his. I know he will and Dorothy will as well.
First off, Garrett and Jess thank you for sharing your lives with us. Your down to earth style is apparent in how you raise your adorable children. Second, I'm working on manifesting ninja kicks for Manila, a soccer team for Cali, and the best, best friend for Dorothy. When I was her age my family moved around every year or two and I never had a best friend until I was a teenager, and even then it was only through my sports teams that I had friends. I felt like I was missing something in life so I'm praying hard for you babies and for the bestie of all besties for Dorothy. Love you guys 💙

Such a wonderful family and Dorothy will know one day how very special you have made her childhood. Friends come and go. Especially now as people don’t seem to stay in the same place for long like they used too. My son and I have lived in the same home the entirely of his 13 years and he has had many friends come and go. No one seems to stay. My childhood was very different. She will find her place as she gets older and her true friends will come around, those that even if you are far away will still be their when you need them. She is blessed to have such loving parents. To have a Mama and a Daddy, her blessings are even more.

growing up my family and I always moved to different countries around the world due to my father’s job. I was Dorothy. But now I can say I am so thankful to the “unconventional” childhood I had and instead of one best friend - I have many close friends around the globe 💛
