In this video I show you how to combine the best parts of an acoustic and electric drum set to make the ULTIMATE ELECTRIC DRUM SET! This set up provides the real feel and look of an acoustic set but with the low volume and convenience of an electric set. I used the Remo Silent Stroke drum heads to reduce the volume of the acoustic drums while pairing them with the Roland RT-30 drum triggers to provide the sound. I also replaced the standard rubber cymbals with the Zildjian L80 Low Volume Cymbals and paired them with the Pintech RS-5 triggers. This combo results in a low volume drum set, the same volume as a standard electric set, with the feel and look of an acoustic drum set!
I've been preparing this build for years now and I finally put it all together. Big thanks to my Patrons and album sales that when combined, provided the funds needed to purchase the triggers, heads, cables, and cymbals! Thank you all so much! If you have any question please let me know in the comments below. Thanks!
Informercial Music By: GWScores - • Generic 90's TV Music!...
Total cost:
$400 RT-30 Triggers
$40 (on sale) Pintech RS-5 Triggers
$100 (Used) L80 Cymbals
$99 Silent stroke heads
= $639
Other parts I already had
$400 Acoustic Drums
$900 TD-9 Module
$57.50 TD-9 Cable Harness
= $1357.50
$639 + $1357.50 = $1996.50
Love the idea. I've never seen anyone add triggers to the Low Volume Zildjian cymbals before. That's way better than buying their Gen 16 Cymbal
Thank you! I had considered buying the Gen-16's but i'd figure i'd give triggering the L80's a shot.
DonutDrums www.stealthdrums.com/purchase22.html
here is a guy that makes triggers made for l80 with bell and edge triggering to. I think that's yhe way to go if you want to upgrade
Yup! I've been looking at those triggers for awhile. That's my next step. Thanks!
heey Justin youre also here xD
Well i'd have to disagree with you. I have the gen 16's and the flexability of having every possible normal cymbal sound is really nice. The best part is that it still is acoustic and that I can choke and whatever I want. Every possible acoustic sound can be made that is not possible with triggered cymbals without using multiple zones.
I did this to my kit about 3 years ago... it's a great way to practice at home, and it works great live also! Hybrid kits are the future of drumming for sure.
Great job editing. My wife was watching and said she's not even into drums but couldn't stop watching the video because it was so interesting. Very talented making vids.
Thanks man! That means a lot!
That was incredibly well edited, awesome job, holy shit
Thanks bud!
Well I guess I'll be turning my kit hybrid instead of investing in a roland, great video! Thanks
No problem! Thank you!
Amazing look at how this works, and one day when I'm foolhardy enough to try to get good at drums.. I shall know how :D
Thanks dude! Cool man! That'd be awesome!
dude this is absolutely awesome
Thank you!
The day I have enough space, it's EXACTLY what I want at home, I'm glad it worked so well for you, and man it kicks ass! Have a ton of fun with it!
Thanks man! I'm glad it worked too! :D
One day... One day...
this was super educational and cool. I feel like it would also be cheaper than a electronic kit as well since you can get a super cheap kit for a few hundo
Very true. Adding up all these parts ended up being a little bit cheaper than a new V-drum kit but most cases will vary. I honesty didn't feel comfortable on the v-drum kit. But now on this new kit I feel like a "real" drummer again.
It would have to be cheaper. You could get a Pac-D kit for 700.00, and a new Roland V-drum kit is 7,500. The non-Rolamd stuff is garbage. Don't bother with it. Sounds horrible from across the room.
A decent E-Kit is somewhere around the 2k dollar price range. With what you've done it would be way less than that.
Amazing idea. My question is about cymbals: choke effect, bell, bow and edge sounds of ride, and of course open and close hi-hat.
That's such an awesome set up! I also didn't know the the Roland module had that level of customisation, that's incredible.
Thanks man! Yeah! That module was a crucial part to make this all work.
Soundole VGM Covers The fucker is expensive as hell!!
Holy shit dude!! This is so freaking awesome! :D So happy for you bro!!
Thanks man!!!
Great idea for cymbals.
Dude you nailed this
I love that. Great job. Perhaps this might be my answer. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic drumming
Thanks!!!
Woah!!! Matt, that looks so crazy good! Glad it worked, and can't wait to see it in action!
Thanks! Yeah, I'm glad it worked too. I can't wait either!
Haha I loved that infomertial intro!
Thanks! That was a lot of fun to film.
Great setiup. I did a very similar thing - 5 pc Pearl Roadshow + a Sonor Force 1007 (turned the RS snare into a floor tom; Sonor in a natural finish is my snare); ddrum triggers, Alesis Strike module, Roland cymbals and a goEdrum Hi-Hat. I have to thank 65 Drums for being a huge inspiration on that journey.
simply wowwwwwwwwwwwwwww..............not knowing what to say more than this............. wonderful..............
i luv this video.. the infomercial style was great.
That was great!! Thanks for that!!
Wow, that's super cool!! Amazing!
Thanks!
That was so well done.
Thanks!!!
that's rad dude, great job and very inspiring!!!!
Thanks!
This guys a fucking genius. Fantastic idea and video.
Yess an FF7 cover, sounds so good
This is so cool man! So much fun to watch!!
Thanks dude!!!!
love the final fantasy VII music 🤘
Really awesome !!
Thanks!
gr8 video mate! i think this kinds of hybrid is the future of drumming!
Thank you!!!
Hi great video - I wondered when adding triggers to Zildjian low volume cymbals would come up - I did it a couple a years ago on Gen 16's - (link to vid using them..) I use them live in my covers band most weeks - I use a Jobeky e-hi hat - its brilliant robust and looks like the real thing.. On the ride i did need to add 'dampening' foam between the trigger and cymbal - without this the signal was just to hot with lots false triggering.. :-)
Thanks! Nice! Very cool info.
one word dude
AWESOME!
Thanks!!!
You had me at FF7 soundtrack. Hahaha. A++
:D:D:D
Very cool dude!
Thanks!!!
Great video. Saved me a lot of money. Kudos for you.
Can't even tell that's it's electric when you are playing! Great job!!!
Dude right on. Definitely going to do this.
This video is crazy, you're great
Thanks!!
That's awesome. I've made a "sort of" electric drumset out of my L80's and the Aquarian superpads. Haven't triggered cymbals though, which is the next step. About everything I've done has felt better than a Roland kit haha. Yours looks great and sounds great too!
Wow Stephen clark! Non glamorous drummer here hehe
Non glamorous drummer!
Awesome!!!
:D:D
Nicely done!
Awesome, cant wait to see what song you use these for
Thanks! I know! I've recorded one collab so far and now I'm recording my own cover today.
So what you’re saying is that with about $1000.00 I can convert my acoustic set in to an electronic set? I was saving up for one of those nice V drums. Thanks dude you are a genius my friend.
You're such an inspiration. I just got to win the lottery now.
Because of this video I'm trying to do the same. I already have the set with silencestroke and the L80 cymbals, now is time to buy the module and triggers. I hope can post my set just like yours. Thanks for the idea
Hi Matt, Thanks for the information and videos. I enjoyed what you did to modify your set to make it work and your editing!😊 I too am in the process of converting my acoustic Pearl set into a hybrid electronic set. My brother passed away in 2019. He played guitar and had a huge amount of equipment. I was the rebel in the family and decided to play drums😂. Rather the equipment collect dust I decided in memory of my brother to convert my acoustic set and let other fellow musicians use what they could and at the same time fund my drum conversion. I decided to go with the Roland 2 ply heads….. not cheap but look awesome. I have 2 heads on back order a 13 and 16”. Who knows when they will come in they are on back order. I am making due with what I have for now. I was able to get a used TD 30 Modular with a chromed rack, Roland TD 13 hi hat and 12” Roland ride. I am almost there, I need 6 more triggers for my toms. I am sourcing out used Roland triggers from Facebook MarketPlace. They will surface eventually I am sure. If you know anyone that have Roland single triggers I would love to reach out to them. I look forward to further videos. I might even partake in producing one of my own …… we will see about that. It is all good now I can play and not be the “noisy guy” in the room. “Keep on drumming!”
Great man
Thanks a lot!
This is an amazing idea imma have to take a shot at this. Awesome video
Awesome Matt😆👍🏻‼️
:D:D
Nice i wating for special video of Zildjan cymbal with your trigger. Thx
good stuff man.. great editing!
Thanks!
This is soooooooo cool.
Thanks man!
great video, but I am on a much stricter budget, I took my $20.00 percussion plus acoustics, pearl muffle heads and piezo buzzers and1/4 inch jacks from radio shack. made my own external triggers , ran them though my td11 module and and elements from my td11 kit and they sound and play wonderfully. got about $80.00 in the conversion.
Brilliant! Great idea! I'm glad it worked out for you.
This looks great! Awesome job! I want to learn to play soon and get a practice set when I get my own apartment, so this was very interesting and I liked your editing. lol
Thank you! I'm going to release more videos showing the volume of this set without the drum module sound.
Much thanks! Good video...
Thanks for watching!
I was thinking to just use the Pearl Redbox module with the ePro Live heads, coupled with the Zildjian Gen 16 cymbals, but your setup saves almost $1000. Great work!
Awesome! I looked into the Pearl module myself. Glad I could help!
Thank you for a very informative tutorial.
Thanks for watching!!
That's it a GENIAL IDEA..
:D:D:D
Clean job man!
Thanks!
The only issue would be the cymbal choke. You'd need to buy a switch membrane ..I've done it, changes the feel a bit and hard to get crash sound I want.
Cheers! I am definitely trying this :)
Great video
Finally a use for my old drumset so i don't have to buy an electronic kit!
This is inspirational.
Thanks!
a final fantasy cover! you got me from the first second :)
Great!!!its very interesting!!!
This was an awesome video and a great idea. I'm a drummer but I dont get to play these days cause I miss church and I don't have a set.
youre a genius sir
can u show how to set the trigger & how to add tones to Module from computer - it will be very helpful if u can make a video
I sure can. I have some other videos I need to finish first but I can definitely make a video for that.
The FFVII Shinra beat! Complete coincidence that I was re-vibing with the soundtrack recently and made a note for a bunch of the tunes to be my next practice plan😄. Hahaha so good. Cheers man.✨
Nice! I love the FFVII soundtrack. Loads of fun to drum too.
I'm with these other guys. Not a drum player myself (bass cleff/guitar), but my man-
Love your music, but this was a really good lesson in digital percussion. Thank you!
(Bttf never gets old)
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Expensive set up, but inspiring nonetheless. I know I'd enjoy having this.
Great video, I'm glad I came across it! :) My church band, I hate playing electronic set but we have an acoustic set sitting back stage that could use this. Thank you so much :))
Great information! Thank you for sharing this. I would make my hybrid kit based on the info you shared!!!
Thank you.
You’re awesome . I just ordered a new E KIT
You're breathtaking! Awesome! Have fun!
The only problem I see with mounting mono triggers to your cymbals is the inability to choke them or in case of a ride cymbal use the bell... And have you never heard of cable ties? xD Props to you Sir, nice kit!
Thank you so much for this idea im going to build my own electric acoustic drum kit one day.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching! Good luck on your build!
DonutDrums did you ever think about putting two of the cheap triggers on your ride cymbal to make it dual zone? I may try that option instead of buying a triggering system from stealth drum since it seems the buying process for those seems a bit shady to me.
I tried that. I put two RS-5 triggers on my ride. One on the bell and one on the bow. For some reason the bell trigger never worked. It never detected a hit even when I adjusted all of the settings. I thought maybe the trigger was defective but when I switched it with another trigger that I knew was working it still didn't respond. Maybe it has to do with the way the bell trigger is programed. Not sure. Hope this helps!
DonutDrums well tbh for me I wouldn't mind going without the two sounds of the ride that much anyway even on an acoustic set I usually just play the bow of the ride cuz my arms are short and I kinda like the sound better anyways. Thanks for all the help I can't wait to build my own hybrid kit!
I seen something like this, about 7or 8 years ago on the guitar center website. it was an electric and acoustic set in 1. I recently tried to find it again but I had no luck. So it's really cool to see you made one yourself, great video
Cool! I'd be interesting in looking that up too. Sounds cool. Thank you!!!
Long ago, I built my own triggers. I had them going in to an Alesis Trigger module. Then straight in to my computer. Not hard at all. Yes cymbals were tricky as initially the double sided tape didn’t stick very well to the cymbals.
Great video!!
Thanks!
Switch your pedal beaters to the plastic side that way they won’t tear your patch
I love this and intend to try it for my self produced new ep for homeless dogs
Ultimate sector 7 slumset
that is an awesome setup, would love to try those!
Thanks! This set up has improved my drumming quality of life.
It was kind of odd to hear undertale music in this but I was into it.
Great video really informative.... and your delviery reminded me of Eric Zoolander :)
haha thanks!
cool video. but i can see wanting dual triggering following this particular configuration
Didn't knew garathe Bale plays drum too 💭
Nice touch with ff7 music
The undertale music
Nice brother.👊
Thank you!!
When i ll be rich... i ll do it xD This is a real good set
Thanks! Yup, that's the downside of being a musician sometimes. It ain't cheap.
Bonus points for FF7 soundtrack!
game changer. say I wanted to add more pieces to the kit leaving more plug ins than inputs on the module. would there be a way to connect the two modules together before going into the computer? it may seem like a bit of a naive question but this is life changing stuff lol. great video
Hey! I've though about this since I have maxed out my inputs when I added a splash and a china. Not sure if it's possible to combine two midi output signals into one and connect it to the computer as one. I'll have to do some research on it.
midi-merger: www.thomann.de/gb/esi_mikro_merge.htm
This is a really cool idea, I wish I had the money to do this lol. Being in college it would be really nice to have this, cause I really don't like most electronic kits being rubber and all that. But then again, my acoustic kit is obviously so freaking loud so I can't play a lot.
I'd like to know more about how the hi hat works
This is one of the things you like a lot, but don't have any money to buy
