  • I'm starting to build what I hope is the perfect electronic drum kit for me. I'll show you the drum heads, drum triggers, and the other gear I'm using to change my Pearl Export acoustic drum kit into an electronic drum set that is fun and inspiring to play while I'm writing songs.

    You don't have to take the cymbal stands apart. The stopper unscrews from the roland cymbal arms. Just unscrew it and take all the cymbal washers off and screw it on your cymbal stands. I have done it several times.

      It's definitely nice having the full size kit feel! Way more fun than my tiny TD-3! 😅 Thanks for watching!

    Cool video, Brother! I had a lot of fun watching this, and nerding out on the technical aspects, and the kit. That's a beautiful kit you've got - and I thought it turned out great. I did this with my Tama Superstar Kit, and it has been so much fun. Actually getting ready to tweak several things now. But I did something very similar. Much more rudimentary with my home-made (piezo) triggers. I used the piezo's and wired them up to TRS female jacks. The 1/4 cables come right out of my Alesis DM-10 module... and into those jacks. I used small l-shaped brackets to build a rack from the top lugs of each piece. On that rack, I used a layer of carpet foam. Then the mouse-paddish material drum (mute) pads. And underneath that, I put a sheet of aluminum flashing - which I cut to size for each drum piece. I attached the piezo triggers to the aluminum - thereby making the entire surface of each drum a trigger. Plugged em' in, and rolled with it. I used the Alesis Kick-Drum tower from the DM-10 kit... and just sat that into the kick side of the kick drum. And I used the Alesis (Gold Plastic) cymbals - as is. Dual zone for crash and ride. And used the Alesis single high-hat and hat controller. I used a Gibralter rack, and hid all the wires. You can't hardly see any wires, and it looks amazing. Not a bad kit - although the cymbals need upgrading, and I suck as a drummer! LOL I'm a guitar player too. Anyway.... I have a blast with it, and the boys like to come over and grab an instrument. So we have fun with it. Anyway - this was fun. I got several ideas from you, and I want to do some tweaking. A little upgrading. I probably also need a more updated drum module too. I'm subbing you.

      Wow, that sounds like an amazing build! If you haven't seen them, 65 Drums has a couple of videos about what's inside drum pads that you might find interesting: "What's Inside Vintage Electronic Drums?" and "What's Inside Modern Electronic Drums?" Thanks for sharing the details on your kit. It's always fun to see how others do things and solve problems. Especially fellow guitar players!

      @@DadRockAndGuitars Yea Brother! It was fun.... has been fun. I get a kick out of it But I think before too much longer, I am going to probably drop the rudimentary old school stuff... and maybe get into some Red Drum triggers, and see how that works. My set-up is cool - and a minor engineering victory for me. LOL But I need to upgrade and modernize a bit. Cymbals and high-hats esp, after I try the Red Drum triggers on my toms.

    On my bass drum i use weather king power stroke pro. Then i put a round foem ring around the bass outside. Not inside from remo and just use your red shot trigger will work perfect. Mine never gave me a problem. I use dubble pedal. The foem will help from dubble trigger. Just fix ur setting module. Don't for get to add a remo sticker on ur drum head to protect the bass head from the beater. I place my trigger at 5 o'clock. I use the ddrum pro on snare.

    Nothing wrong with this at all dude if it works your on to a winner. Ive just converted a premier elite kit with Jobeky internal triggers and there double ply heads using an old Roland td20 to drive it . In my honest opinion it’s way better than the td20 ever was the only thing I had to do was dial the sensitivity in a bit and it’s perfect . The other thing I like is actually playing the full size kit again I really can’t stand playing these Micky mouse size electronic drum kits no matter how good on paper they are they always feel like a toy to me .
    Great vid thanks 👍

    • @DadRockAndGuitars
      @DadRockAndGuitars  2 года назад

      I forgot about the Jobeky triggers. I've heard good things about those. Are yours the ones that mount to the side of the shell or use the cross bars?
      I agree about the size of the kit. My TD-3 kit was tiny. It worked, especially when I didn't have a lot of room, but the full size kit is way more comfortable to play! Thanks for watching and commenting Bigsquatch Sasfoot!

      @@DadRockAndGuitars there the internal triggers they come in a few configurations from a straight bar , triple and quad mounting depending on your shell lug amounts and are doubled sensor as in shell and centre of the drum. I gotta admit I’m super impressed with them and I’m not that easy to please with this technology after playing acoustic kits for 50 years . I did experience some beater bounce on the mesh 20;in bass drum head so I made an internal hallo of aluminium with foam on it to go around the trigger and it works good but I suppose you could stuff the drum tight with an old quilt or something for the same results .I think it cost me about £500 Uk for all the triggers heads rim hoop rubbers so well worth it . Cheers dude 👍

    About to do a similar conversion on a 90's era Mapex Mars series 4 piece shell pack (2 toms, Kick, & snare) that I've had packed away for years in storage. Currently pondering weather to DIY my own internal triggers, or just temporarily opt for some cheap and easy Pintech ones for the toms, and then use a higher end model for the single zone bass drum & dual zone snare.
    Currently I've been playing on a little mesh kit comprised of a hodge podge of various branded pads and triggering Toontrack's EDZ/SPD via an Alesis Trigger I/O. It's Okay, but after I convert my Mapex kit? I'll be looking for potentially an older Roland module. Something like a TD-3, 4, 5, or 6 perhaps? Although an Audiofront eDRUMin 8 or10 midi I/O would also be great.
    FYI,
    I've begun using the Lemon brand E-Cymbals, and I must say? The are legitimately rather good! Especially for the price!
    Cheers!

    • @DadRockAndGuitars
      @DadRockAndGuitars  11 месяцев назад

      That's great! I don't do anything fancy with my toms, so the simple ddrum triggers have worked well for those. I do plan to get a Roland snare trigger in the near future.
      I have not heard of the Lemon E-cymbals. Just took a look and they do seem pretty good. And the price is reasonable as well. May pick up the 18" ride at some point. Thanks for sharing that info!
      Good luck with your conversion! Let me know how it goes.

    I used the same heads and the same triggers and they worked perfectly for toms and they would work for the snare but be limited. I had the Roland TD11 as well so I mainly did the conversion for looks. Then I found a TD27 KV2 with all 3 digital pads for half the price so I bought it, I combined both modules and some other pads and placed everything on my Gibraltar rack for a kit with 7 drums and 8 cymbals. ruclips.net/video/8aaWg0iHOwM/видео.html&pp=ygUUTHVjeWZlcmluYSBpbiBmbGFtZXM%3D

    Singly ply mesh heads are not the way to go. Two ply works best. Dual zone triggers mounted internally is better than single trigger mounted externally.
