  • Hello and welcome to That British Homestead,
Today we are looking about the allotment such a massive change since we had done so much weeding. It is shocking how much of a difference an hour shimming makes.
We look at the tomato 🍅 we are growing over 70 heirloom tomatoes, the backbone of our homemade food, we are going to be making tomato sauce, BBQ, ketchup, we are very excited about having so much homemade organic food.
The strawberry plot is now exploding into life, we are getting buckets and buckets of strawberries 🍓 which we are making into pies, and fruit leathers. There is nothing quite like home grown strawberries.
The herb patch needs weeding ( we are not perfect and it is the month of weeds) and the squash patch looks tiny, but very soon there will be so many and so big squashes that we will not be able to walk in that area! i will be shocking. Thing grow so fast now its so warm and the days are getting longer each day.
The garlic patch is struggling with Rust, something that we have struggled with in the allotment. Rust stunts the garlic and will impact the size of the overall harvest. There is not treatment for rust sadly so we have to just hope that we will be able to get some harvest.
We are also growing unusual veggies like jerusalem artichoke which are a childhood favorite for us as small a child. This is a fantastic harvest that will keep us in food in the hungry gap, and have lovely flowers.
Talking of flowers the peonies are looking amazing, I like to cut some for a lovely bunch of flowers for home. They look stunning and really brighten up the house, bring some of the spring into our home.
There are a number of beds that are still needing work! However, I still have so many peppers, aubergines and a number of cold crops that need to plant out. Which I am hoping to do this week!
My fruit trees are looking amazing, they are covered in plums and apples, I am exciting to dream of all the things that I can make with them apples and plums from the allotment. We have not had any harvested yet, so this is a very exciting year.
We are growing a lovely lot of cucumbers which we are very excited about, we have a row of picking cucumber and a row of fresh eating cucumbers. We love pickeles and are excited for them to come in!

Just got home from the plot and sorting my tomatoes 🍅 😂 now sitting down to watch you and your tomatoes 😂😂 oh and I just harvest a big bag of strawberries 🍓 wild yes wild here too!!! Sorry not sorry. Still lots even though the slugs eating some.
Back to tomatoes 🍅 soooo many suckers 😮 and it’s was hard not to put them in pots 😂😂 I HAVE ENOUGH TOMATOES 😂😂😂 dare not count mine 😂😂
Good job I didn’t touch or go near my onions today after pulling 2 garlic covered in rust!
Tricia has just said you sound posh 😂 and that you are her favourite RUclipsr.
Leo was in our home garden over the weekend. He planted some beans 🫘 and then he was done. Only fell a little and squashed a potato plant 🌱 😂😂 sure it will be fine. He is not keen on getting dirty.
Hope my courgettes survive the slugs!!!
Thank you for the mention such a surprise ❤ 🥰
Don’t miss the m25 at all!! (Lived 20 years in Kent) Artichokes 😂😂 will grow anywhere.
Ooh interested in the mallow for lozenges ❤ next year.

Oh that's so much! Tell Tricia I say thanks! Bless her!

I just love tomatoes I can't wait for them to start producing, they have gotten massive now! I'm so excited. I need to trim them soon! lol when you have so many it's a real job lol 😝
The snails have been terrible I hope my veg is ok! I need to manure 4 beds still... everything is slower with a baby lol
I sometimes wish jasmine was like that... she has just come in covered in bird lol 😂
If the marshmallow is any good I'll send you some of the roots. The plant is much bigger than I thought it would be!

To extend the time a peony plant makes blooms for you, deadhead the blossoms before they start to make seeds. (Yes, you'll have to stay on top of this!) Just as with deadheading other types of flowers, you are forcing the plant to make more blossoms in order to produce seeds: prevent it making seeds for its next generation, and it is supposed to make more flowers.
The other thing you can do to keep peonies coming all through the flower gardening season is to plant early, mid and late period blooming peonies. If you want the appearance of having just one variety making blossoms all peony-season long, select your varieties for similar hues in your early, middle and late flowering peonies, to seem to extend the blooming period.
*So* glad to know there is at least one other gardener who starts beans in trays, cups or small pots! All the conventional wisdom is, of course, that you mustn't risk disturbing the roots of leguminous plants, but I tried transferring into containers some runner bean seeds I'd tested for germination and then decided, "Why waste all this lovely potential?" when I saw the Aggressive Space Alien root systems (which I knew were mostly bluff: they're not as ferocious as they appear, right?) They survived and thrived in their containers, until we had a heat wave and failed to keep up with the watering; they died, and it was of course our fault but up until that neglecting of them they were doing splendidly.
And who's to say what's too many tomato or cucumber plants, or, come to it, too many varieties? You're the gardener as well as the homesteader, and you know what you need to grow in your garden!
For me, this year, I'm finally growing a determinate variety of tomato for making green tomato mincemeat (more like a chutney, I'm told by chutney fanciers) but I want a *LOT* of green tomato mincemeat this year and I'd rather not be processing green tomatoes every other evening all summer long; just a few larger batches, please!
Much gardening love from Northeast Ohio, USA! 😊💚💚💚💚💚😊

    • @ThatBritishHomestead
      @ThatBritishHomestead  Месяц назад +1

Same I like to have a load of stuff to process at the same time.... I don't want to can one jar of tomatoes a day I'd rather do a massive batch... I can every other day in the summer.. I hate the heat. I chuck a ton of fruit in the freezer till the mad rush is over too... then I make jam.... I already have about 3 kg if stawberries in the freezer
If in doubt I'll make wine lol 😝
I love tomatoes I don't think you can have too many... tomatoes is such a perfect thing to grow you can make so many meals from it
I'll have to look into the types, I got these when I moved into t the allotment! They were freee!

    • @bhalliwell2191

@@ThatBritishHomestead Beyond "herbaceous," which is what I believe your peonies are (and anyone else viewing and reading, please jump in here if you know more about these fabulously gorgeous flowers than I do!), there isn't a lot I can tell you about peony varieties. To have had them right there on your allotment plot, you are so fortunate!
Eww, no: who'd want to can only one jar of tomatoes at one time, if you can do pints and pints and quarts and quarts of an evening?
As long as I'm on the subject, though, in years gone by when I've made this green tomato mincemeat (has no actual meat in it, by the way) I've used the green tomatoes from the kitchen garden and at that time/those times, I was growing indeterminate varieties.
It's taken only this long for me to have reasoned out that it's a container shipload of smarts smarter to be growing (and processing) determinate tomato varieties, but off the top of my head I can't think of one other than Marglobe. Any suggestions?
Also, not certain why I feel this needs to be said, but I'm going to say it: when one speaks of making green tomato mincemeat, those green tomatoes have to be GREEN, and we're not speaking of the color of the ripened fruits such as Green Zebra or Aunt Ruby's German Green. It means completely unripened, green, green, green without so much as a hint of paler green anywhere on the skin, that pale place later becoming pale, pale green, almost whitish, then yellowish, and finally blushed with pink before becoming pink or red.
I don't see any merit in sowing and growing red-ripening varieties of tomatoes if they're indeterminate *or* if they're very juicy and/or have large seed cavities.
So, I'm asking you: what determinate variety of tomato do you recommend for my purpose?
Much gardening and preserving love from Northeast Ohio, U.S.A.! 😊💚💚💚💚💚😊
