  • Having branched to our first novel with All Quiet on the Western Front, the Human Action Podcast begs your indulgence for one of the works of 20th century British satire. Lucky Jim (Mises.org/LuckyJim) is the late Kingsley Amis's seminal send-up of campus life, and it's among your host's favorite books. The book takes place in 1951, and England is trying but failing to lose its class distinctions. The protagonist Jim Dixon is singularly unfit for the academic life he's chosen, and the opportunities for Amis to skewer both the academy and English society are manifest.
Allen Mendenhall (AllenMendenhall.com) of Troy University joins the show to discuss the academic pretenses and foibles punctured by Amis, along with great insights about Amis's background and political views. If you like satire, don't miss this show or this book!

As a recently retired academic who barely survived the profession, I almost died of laughter reading this book, especially the ending.

This will be the perfect book for me right now. As a student, Jim's contempt for academia is shared by me.

Jeff is right, my ability to read books now is over until I'm retired, and I'm a 28 year old professional. Time is finite and the only spare time I have is spent laying there exhausted.

Thank you for this. I've always been the greatest fan of Amis'. The early Evelyn Waugh novels should be next.

A good "read and review"er of books will evantually led people to read the book they read and reviewed.
To confirm things directly from the book that incite their interest mentioned by the reviewer.

A great first novel by Amis but none of his other novels seem half as good

He was never a first rate novelist.
