    Since the bullet travelles faster than the speed of sound hearing the impact first before the shoot actually makes sense if the shooter is far enough away and the impact close enough.

    • @jibb1451
      @jibb1451 4 года назад

      Yeah, if you are good at figuring out which type of round it was, you can even make a rough estimation of the range it was shot from based on the sound travel time. If you hear an impact followed buy a 7.62x39 gunshot sound after a half second, you can tell that the round was shot from about 350M away if the bullet was traveling at 700m/s. Give or take.

    • @duffytgay3353
      @duffytgay3353 4 года назад +3

      @@jibb1451 True but its highly impractical for most engagements in Tarkov. Half a second is really fast and that's for 350m at 700m/s. It gets a lot more difficult to do the closer they are and the faster the bullet travels. If the sound of impact and the sound are really close together, all you really know is that they are close vs far.
      You have to take into account more than just the caliber and the firearm to be even remotely accurate. You need the ammo type (bullet velocity for 5.56 ranges from 873 to 1013m/s), but more importantly you need to know the barrel options that are available for their particular firearm (barrels for an m4 range from 873-1006) muzzle velocity). That's not including muzzle devices.
      And that really only comes into play if you can accurately tell how much time passed in between shot and impact. Using your example (which I believe is based on an SKS so I'll do the same) but putting the shooter at 100m would result in the sound of impact and sound of shot being fired being heard within 0.142 seconds of each other. 50m would be within 0.071 seconds. That's insanely fast and hard for most people to discern. Or lets use this for someone shooting a 20" m4 with m995 (~1000m/s). You hear impact .5 seconds before hearing the shot fired. Okay, they're 500 meters away. Now we'll put them 100m away with the same setup. It would be 0.1 seconds. 50 meters away would be 0.05 seconds. This is definitely viable for counter sniping on maps with long sight lines but I cant see it being useful for much else other than knowing if they are within 100m of you (which is great because 95% of my deaths are within 100m).
      It is really good to to understand how muzzle velocity impacts the stated bullet velocity and how it affects your shot placement though. For example, If you want to shoot m995 (which has a bullet velocity of 1013m/s) out of a shorty barrel m4 (which has a muzzle velocity of 873m/s), the m995 round is going to be traveling closer to 873m/s than it is to 1013m/s). Lower muzzle velocity = more arc'd trajectory/more bullet drop/more leading shots. Not a big deal if going for CQB but a huge deal if you're trying to make sniping easier on yourself. Higher velocities = flatter trajectory/less bullet drop/less leading of shots. Great for sniping/longer range engagements.
      As for Jesse, he should have trusted his ears AND his EYES. He didn't see any silhouettes to the front, no muzzle flashes, no movement, nothing. The sound of the impact was in front of him, sure, but it was also close therefore he would have seen them. So the only logical place would be the rock. Although I'm sure it can't be easy keeping track of all the sound cues, and quickly scanning the area while also watching twitch chat and talking. I honestly don't know how streamers do it, just practice I guess.
      Sorry for the long post. I don't do it typically because most people don't care. But I had nothing better to do so screw it I did it anyways.

  • @IanDresari
    @IanDresari 4 года назад +8

    Well the bullet travels faster than the speed of sound, so if the time it takes for the impact sound to travel from the impact site to your ears is shorter than the time it takes for the sound from the gun to reach your ears, you will hear the impact first.

    I'm typing this before I've seen the whole video. If you hear on see a gunshot hit a wall, like in the first clip, the sound will be audible for a short period. As you can hear after the shot hits the wall, the shot was louder and thus you can hear the lingering sound of the initial shot to Jesse's right after the shot lands on the wall.
    EDIT: Jesse explains this in detail. Watch the whole video!

Starting getting lit up by a silenced rifle and swore it was to my front because it was hitting metal. What I should have realized is that it was hitting metal because the shots were exiting or missing me and hitting the truck in front of me. Seriously hard to do right.

    The first shot is first heard on the left and then echoes right.
    A good way to figure out what is going on with the audio might be to take the clip and load it into a free audio editing tool like Audacity. that way you can see the graphs for left and right separately and get a better idea of what is going on.
    I love the different sounds, I used to play paintball in a private group deep in Ministry of Defence land. A lot of the rustle and chafing sounds of your clothes and stuff underfeet are pretty authentic. You really notice it when your trying to stay alert while crawling, crouching, stalking and running through different terrain. Tarkov pulls that off well.
    I find the positional audio up close very hard to distinguish, typically not so much left and right, but when they are close and diagonals from me like NE or SE or behind. Utilities like Dolby Atmos can be quite good at that even if they compartmentalize the sounds somewhat. I have an Astro headset and use the EQ to try and enhance footstep frequencies which helps a lot. Thanks for the tip about rotating myself to try and get a better bearing on the direction noise is coming from.
    I only have about 2 weeks experience with this game so far. Tough, but I really like it and your channel has been really helpful. I subscribed straight after watching the first one :)

    Supersonic ammo from a suppressed (dvl?mosin?). Ammo travels faster than sound, so you hear the close impact on the left before you hear the report of the rifle from far behind/right. No bugs with audio there.
    The sound in tarkov at the moment is VERY good. The only problems i can tell with right now are with occlusion. Which is why you can hear someone directly below you through 10 ft of dirt and concrete, but struggle to hear someone 2 feet below you in a stairwell. Also why you can hear shots that sound inside with the volume and intensity of close outdoor shots. The propagation through mediums (air or barriers) has a hard time being processed by the audio module correctly. The location is pinpoint accurate >99% of the time. The 2nd module of steam audio is to help fix the issue with occlusion. It is currently in the works. Do not blame these issues on the binural audio. It is completely unrelated.

    Audio in this game can definitely be wonky, regardless of the type of audio you use. That first clip definitely sounds like bullet hitting wall/ground to the left and then ringing of the shot after on the right/behind. If it was a long ways away and out of an extremely fast moving bullet (M995 is over 1000m/s), maybe the audio engine could simulate that the bullet hits before sound catches up (due to proximity to the impact) but just a little buggy imo on that first shot.

    • @SmarXTea
      @SmarXTea 4 года назад +2

      Not saying anything against the audio being wonky sometimes. But you could clearly hear the shot being taken from behind/slightly right. As of this patch (i have no clear memory of patches before) there almost always is a bullet hit right before the shot. Just as you mentionend the engine seems to be simulating sound travel time and bullet impact apart from another depending on the explicit caliber and its bullet travel time.

    I think the biggest issue here is how absolutely busted suppressors are in this game, and it's surprising how few people bring it up. For a game that wants to be "realistic" they really botched suppressors, they're Hollywood quiet at range when in reality they hardly even bring the noise from your muzzle down to a decibel level that's safe for your ears. It's almost impossible to tell even the general direction someone is shooting from when they use a suppressor at a decent distance and that definitely needs to change.

    • @clalam5241

    In Day Z SA this threw a lot of people. You did hear the impact first followed by the shot. Assuming tarkov does infact render the bullet as a generator of sound, because it is supersonic your going to hear crack impact, then the gunshot as it gets to you. This one is tricky because he was at a super awkward distance and a super awkward angle behind you at like 170*. This all assumes that tarkov is actually simulating the speed of sound from the crack of the bullet and the report of the gun. (I know you are very smart and have probably already consider this. this is just my initial assessment). Crazy awkward distance, really awkward angle.) Cheers!

    !HELP !DISCUSSION
    Whenever I get shot at, hearing the supersonic whip or the impact first ( or even both in quick succession ), I do such an extensive panic pull on my mouse that I just cannot locate the last but most important audible cue, namely the gunshot xD
    During that panic pull the gunshot just is smudged too much across my lateral audible field while pulling a 90-degree-off-current-movement-direction-sprint-start. (or what ever the equivalent of the visual field for audio is called )
    But I dont think it would be smart to wait for the actual gunshot sound to arrive either, because by the time you hear it, there might already be another round on the way and if you did not move your head by that time, your probably dead.
    Any Opinions on how to counter this "being irritated by the panic dodge"? Usually I do judge the direction towards my enemy wrong because of it, but I keep it in mind and wait for a second shot, trying actively to not smudge that audio cue too.
    would be great to know this detailed how other ppl react to being shot at, maybe we get to learn from each other!

    The first shot is clearly coming from behind your back, 4'o clock or so. I don't understand how it could sound from the front as impact is louder but its to your 10 o clock or so, which is a wall. That being said, I do have those moments where i cant tell the general direction of the shot or mix it completely, especially when i'm caught in the open... a distant impact can sound very much like a suppressed shot, combine it with bullets cracking my brain just shuts down and i end up just running away from the sound.
