Happy Sunday to you, Mr Nuts. Thank you so much for bringing your unique linguistic paraphernalia every Sunday and sharing it with us and causing pandemonium on RUclips. Today's lesson is indeed agathokakological and I would love to know whether you write the script of your videos on your own and do you have an amanuensis? ❤
Admittedly, as a long time word enthusiast, I already knew these words.. But why on earth would paraphernalia and pandemonium be considered Tharoor-style words. One would easily stumble upon these in newspaper headlines. I am citing a few examples below. Covid- An inner paraphernalia -- The Times of India Keeping it colourful with poll paraphernalia - The Hindu Pandemonium in Karnataka Assembly over adoption of resolution condemning Centre on devolution of tax - The Hindu BTW, bedlam, a shorter substitute for pandemonium, is relatively less common, at least in terms of usage :)
While not a huge fan of modern English (which has a huge American influence), I like how it uses imagery and directness to simplify complex words like these. E.g., Pandemonium- Chaos/ Going wild Agathokakological- Layered/ Having shades of grey Amanuensis- Note taker/ Scribe Paraphernalia - Kit and caboodle/ Assortment of stuff The alternatives might run into more words but usually compensate by being reader-friendly.
Amanuensis I was not familiar with... but agathokakological is one of my favorite words, the other being vicissitude... I would like to request you to discuss the word vicissitude 🙏
