- This is the second in a series of collaborations with Irish filmmaker Luke Brabazon. The first was Molly O'Mahony, found here( • Molly O'Mahony, "Golde... , in case you missed it. Luke is a kindred spirit that I met on my trips to Ireland, and after working together to film some stuff there, we decided to continue the partnership and have him record some more great Irish music for GemsOnVHS.
This time around, he met up with the band Alfi. I'd tried to set up a meeting with Alfi myself when I was there, but the timing didn't work out. So I was happy to have the opportunity to bring their music to y'all, with Luke at the helm. Y'all might recognize the harpist, Alannah Thornburgh ( • Alannah Thornburgh, "B... , from a previous recording I made. She'd told me about her band, where she is joined by musicians Fiachra Meek and Ryan McAule. Here they are singing one of my personal favorite tunes of all time, Jubilee, which i'd heard Jean Ritchie doing with Doc Watson on a live album of theirs. Here it is, particularly and exceedingly beautiful and moving. A unique makeup of instruments, Irish meets Appalachia, this is something special. Barn swallows swoop in and out, dancing in tune.
Some words from Luke himself on the filming;
"When I arrived at the Seamus Ennis Centre in north Dublin to film with Alfi, we spent a few minutes looking around for a good location. We found a small side room to the centre's cafe, and as Alannah and I accidentally knocked a roller blind off the window, the owner Sean walked in and greeted us. "Don't worry about that - why don't you use the old shed out the back?"
It was perfect. Clearly a party spot enjoyed by many a local teenager, the barn and surrounding buildings of the courtyard feel ready for new life to be brought in. After borrowing some chairs from the cafe, we were ready to go. The birds flying around during the performance were a wonderful addition, we hope they didn't mind our intrusion into their home.
Alfi are an incredible band, and I'm delighted to be able to present them to the Gems On VHS audience."

This was such a joy to film, thank you Alfi for letting me record this, and Gems on VHS for sharing it!
Any time!
Such amazing work all around!
Gorgeous stuff
Beautiful. A very pleasant surprise to find a variant of Irish trad here, and it's fun to see music pollinating from Ireland to Appalachia and back again like this.
This is powerful stuff. What this world needs right now is a Jubilee!
Wow that was beautiful. I don't know how this channel manages to outdo itself time and time again.
Saw them sing this in Dundalk on Saturday, National Harp Day in Ireland. Absolutely wonderful.
Words can't describe how this makes me feel. My relatives came over from Ireland and the folk music stirs my soul
Irish-French here, also amateur banjo player, this songs resonates so much, thank you for your brilliant performance.
Can't wait to add this song (and maybe others to come?) to Apple Music.
thanks for taking the time
what great editing and romanticized storytelling crafted around folk music in Ireland in this video! I'd be hard pressed not to invite myself to watch if I saw these artist walking by.
This hits the spot
This is my type of music. This is the only place I find it.
I love this Irish Folk music. Keep it up Gems. It’s a real beautiful melody.
Commented on IG, but man, I’ve listened to this a few times now. Great capture of some amazing artists. Good job Anthony
This is among your best. That is saying something. Just perfect. Full circle.
Deadly!! Class stuff Alfi. Seamus was the 👑 on the uilleann pipes! Lovely song
I haven't heard that song in years. Thanks.
Dang. Now I need to obtain a low Whistle and uillean pipe set. Beautifully done. We are going to cover this in my folk band now. Our fiddler has a daughter named Jubilee. Such a sweet tender song. It’s Amazing the Appalachia and Irish blending of flavors.
Lovely bit, gets me that "hand me over a pint" kinda feeling. Chords and lyrics below folks!

It’s all out on the old railroad
It’s all out on the sea
All out on the old railroad
As far as I can see
[Chorus]
Swing and turn, Jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee
[Verse 2]
The hardest work I ever did
Was working on the farm
Easiest work I ever did
Was swing my true love’s arm
[Chorus]
Swing and turn, Jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee
[Verse 3]
The coffee grows on a white oak tree
And the river runs in brandy
I got a girl, she's mighty fine
As sweet as sugar candy
[Chorus]
Swing and turn, Jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee
[Interlude]
[Verse 4]
Some will come at Saturday night
Some will come on Sunday,
But if you give me half a chance
I'll be back on Monday
[Chorus]
Swing and turn, Jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee
[Verse 5]
Well if I had a needle and thread
As fine as I could sew
I’d sew my true love to my side
And down the road we'd go
[Chorus]
Swing and turn, Jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee
[Verse 6]
Saddle me up the old gray mare
Who shall be their rider?
Ride her down to the old still house
And get a jug of cider
[Chorus]
Swing and turn, Jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee
Swing and turn, Jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee
Swing and turn, Jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee
Swing and turn, Jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee

This is wonderful! Amazing to be able to hear such fine music from across the world.
I'm mesmerized by how great the harp sounds in this song
Magic!!!
Lovely! I never would have thought that harp, banjo, and a set of pipes could sound so nice together!
Thanks for showing these guys! They've become a new favorite of mine!
First time seeing a 5 string in some irish folk music. Awesome video as always. Thanks again Anthony and GEMS crew.
Ya! I was happy to see it.
glad you stopped by! Luke shot this one, our compatriot in Ireland I met when I was there in October last year. He is a legend, and in the same spirit as us!

@@GemsOnVHSI am they just don't show up in my "recommended" for some reason. RUclips has lots of weird glitches
Superbe
Folk Novice here. The flute that the gentleman plays at 1:48 - What exactly is that called?
Should be called a Tin Whistle or Penny Whistle. Hope this helps :)
Is that some kind of modern tin whistle he's playing ?
It's called a low whistle. Pretty common in Irish traditional music. Lots of pipers are low-whistle players.
@@LoyaltyOfDogsDotCom thank you !
What's the name of the first instrument that the guy on the left plays in this video? It's like a giant tin whistle
It’s a low whistle, just a tin whistle in a lower pitch :)
A true Appalachian classic.
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
