Why I'd Start FPV on the DJI FPV, but Switch to the iFlight Nazgul Evoque (or other FPV drone) Later

  • This is nearly 30 minutes of raw, bedhead, honest thoughts meant for a good friend from a guy who started with DJI FPV, loved it, thinks it's great, but moved on to pre-built "hobby grade" FPV drones like the iFlight Nazgul Evoque F5 after getting more serious into the FPV hobby.
The short of it? The DJI is extremely beginner friendly, has far better range, far better battery life, and is actually less expensive for the quad, camera, charger, battery, remote, and goggles providing you DON'T CRASH. Beginners should be spending a ton of time in the simulators, but also getting time in the air. DJI's RTH, panic button, and other beginner friendly features make it awesome for somebody new to FPV.
So for somebody who is starting out and practicing acro/full manual mode in open air, DJI FPV is the way to go after a LOT of time in the sim.
!!!HOWEVER!!! If you get to the point where you want to start flying riskier "missions" like bandos, tricks, trees, chase footage, and other low to the ground stuff, that's when I'd switch to prebuilts and "hobby grade" drones like the iFlight Nazgul Evoque F5. Why? Because if you crash the DJI FPV, you're hosed. If you crash a Nazgul, it's likely going to survive... but just in case it doesn't, they're pretty easy to patch up. The jump from DJI FPV to "Hobby" prebuilts still has a pretty steep learning curve when it comes to charging, fixing, etc... but it's VERY worth it if you plan on crashing often... which you should... because flying FPV open air is super boring.

As a beginner, I don’t regret my DJI FPV.
I fly it everyday I can make it outside!
    You sir are criminally undersubbed!

I think you may have talked your friend Mitch out of getting into FPV. 🤣 - My first FPV was the DJI FPV. I think it's a great way to enter the hobby of FPV. I quickly moved to a Nazgul5 V2 HD and had to buy a lot of things to fly it. Took me a while to get my head around everything. Lots of watching videos. Checking out FB groups. Etc. - setting up the radio was a pain but I managed to get through it. It's fun once you fly but there is no denying that it takes a lot of upfront cash to get into it. For the first few months I spent more time in the simulator than flying my DJI FPV in Acro. It's been a journey and it never ends. Good luck to Mitch. Insightful video.

    i got a second EVOQUE F5D 6s.
just because its that damn good.
get the 6s version. because you can fly that with 4s as beginner also and just swap to 6s later!

DJI is an expensive gateway - suggest $200 set like Tinyhawk 2 or betafpv kit. Analog and great for learning. Then get digital setup like Nazgul or Diatone Roma F5

Great idea on the dive case. I'm gonna do that too. I started building first and have about 8 under my belt,, but just bought the dji fpv. Got a great deal on a just refreshed one with 2 extra batteries with 2 crashes and a year and a half left on care refresh. Now I have a ride along pair of DJI v2 goggles as a bonus. I agree that the DJI fpv would have been a great way to start. BUT, only if you have the discipline to stay in normal and sport mode until you have a lot of time on the sim. And even then, I'd build or buy a second real fpv drone if you want to get into super daring freestyle and save the DJI for the more long range and cinematic stuff. Good advice. Also, get a second State Farm policy for the DJI. About $75/yr, and it covers if the drone is totally lost or stolen.

EMAX tinyhawk 2 freestyle RTF kit and an extra THIIF quad. Low investment and inexpensive entry level freestyle FPV. By the time the quads are broken your buddy should know if he wants to invest further.

That DJI crap takes 3 hours to replace an arm! A good drone takes about ten minutes and is way cheaper. I'd suggest a mini mavic to start, then simulator acro mode, then a real carbon fiber frame cheap acro drone, that can take a beating, and is way cheaper and easier to fix!

You are 100% right. I came similar way as you did. First Mini, after few weeks Mini2. Then DJI FPV in normal and sport mode. Then sumulator. Next DFJI FPV in acro mode, but at least 30 meters over ground. Then Nazgul5 v2 - lots of fun, lots of crashes, few tree landings. But this hobby is great,. I love it :-)

I have to say you are pretty spot on with your arguments about both 'type' of drones.
I always wanted to get into FPV flying, but i was somewhat afraid of the 'whole' process, so much to learn and know about everything.
Now when DJI released this epic FPV drone and noticed it, i instantly bought it, it was a no - brainer for me.
Imo the DJI drone is just perfect to get into the FPV world, if you buy the combo you can even reuse your goggles if you stick with the digital system (which imo i would be doing).
I never have flown analog and probably never will at this point.
That said, now that i'm starting to get more comfortable with the DJI drone, i have a feeling where it's limited, but i'm fine with that so far, sooner or later i will build my own quad because i'm already doing things i shouldn't do with the DJI drone.
Anyways, very nice video man! Subbed and liked, maybe you can have a look at how i progressed flying FPV ;)

I have zero idea how people get recommendations for starting with dji fpv 🤷‍♂️
I also don’t know why some recommend whoops! Bloody bizarre!
Use a sim, know what you like and go buy it, mate my computer broke the 1st week so sim was off full stop for the entirety of learning, I’ve lost ONE lipo in a year!, leave the GoPro off and just practice- don’t get stupid and you’ll crash less but you are going to crash PERIOD- it comes with the territory and there ain’t no shortcuts, longer you are off acro the worst it’ll be for you in the long run and Betaflight is used by my 10 year old daughter!, you break that dji and you ain’t flying for a long time, chances are even a noob can work out how to mend a fpv quad👍
I’m not sure what you are after and honestly I don’t think you do either buddy, this is ment in the best possible way but you literally have bought a load of quads from the off, why? There is NO fast track to fpv, one simply does not “get into fpv” 😎🤝the reason you aren’t getting on with these quads is apart from the whoop you need to be in acro, this isn’t a Apples vs apples comparison, all the issues you raise about failsafe etc are ridiculous, you’ve rushed into things and are confused I think, also your politics assessment is off point also - by a LONG WAY, JB doesn’t have his name on companies kit, companies have HIS name on THEIR kit!
Literally the reason you struggled was BECAUSE you started on the DJI brother 👍, you can’t live on angle mode and then say the quads are difficult to fly 😅 of COURSE they are 😮
get on acro mate and enjoy yourself 😃🤜🏻🤛🏻
Love your narration and enthusiasm, love your vids too but “don’t take this the wrong way” you threw money at what looked sexy and easy, bought different quads that fly in different ways & because of your haste have missed out on the simple stuff, you got zero problem with your ability brother and are definitely going to be all over it once you change your mindset as your potential is awesome - that can be clearly seen in your flying 👍🤜🏻🤛🏻

Hey just found your videos! Love them btw! I also just brought a DJI fpv as my first fpv drone. I’m bitten by the bug and now want a Nazgûl evoque with crossfire for long range missions. But it’s a lot as the only thing I can transfer is headset. If you could share in another video maybe later a bit about charging the batteries and maybe some advice about the migration from DJI to a traditional fpv drone. Thank you so much.

I'd be happy to! Just FYI, the Diatone Roma (which is Bardwell's other favorite pre built besides the Nazgul) just went on sale at racedayquads.com , might be a really good time to jump on that! As for the radio controller, I've had really good range from the DJI fpv remote v1, setup is super easy, and range seems crazy long. I'm not sure how it stacks up to crossfire though range wise.
