Many years ago my father told me a story about hanging out with Nat King Cole, and they drove together to a fancy club where Nat was the headline act and was going to perform that night. and they parked the car and walked to the front entrance of the club, and Nat said to my father, you go in and I will meet you inside. and my dad said where are you going, and Nat said I have to enter the nightclub through the back entrance, and my dad said Weil I will just go with you to the back entrance, and Nat said no that is ok, just go in and I'll meet you inside. when you look at how things are today it seems like an entirely different world. because we have come a long way, but there will always be a certain amount of racism in this world. and it's not just coming from one direction. some people just don't like people who are not like them. Now I want to go to Cliftons, a white owned place that took a stand at a time when people didn't do things like that, the place should be talked about more. I enjoyed this video and love the car.
I'm 56. My grandparents used to take us to that Clifton's when we were kids. It was elegant for sure but accessible. In the best way possible, I can remember the smells and the food and the décor. I was sure it was shut down and destroyed by now. Thank you Jay for showing this.

That was uh... an eye opener, thanks for doing that story Jay, and George (btw you still working Vegas?). I was clueless to the existence of The Green B ook. Even with Jay’s attempts to inject some levity, it was an uncomfortable topic, and the more George went on, the more difficult it was for me to hold in the tears. I’m also a visible minority and I can’t begin to imagine being with my family and needing that book in order to do (what is for the rest of society) regular activities, safely, without, threats, harassment, and physical violence. What’s so sad is we didn’t learn from our history and haven’t progressed since. Just look at our politics of the last four years; the moral direction of society flows from the top. Part of the first family’s role is to model the values, ethics, and ideals of American families. In the early 70’s I went with my Dad to California for a week for a conference he went to attend. Rather than eating in the hotel, every morning we walked down to Clifton’s for breakfast. The menu was extensive and the food was incredible. I never forgot about that place. Just hearing about its history I’m sure it was such a delight because we felt free there. I’m sure my Dad knew what was up and didn’t want to drop that burden on a nine year old from the north.
Nice to see Mr. Wallace. I'm old enough to remember him and some guy named Gary Seinfield as guests on the Mike Douglas show and then I saw him open for Tom Jones at the Front Row Theatre in Cleveland, OH. He took my wife's drink and then asked her if she ever had Sickle Cell. He was great... Great story (as tragic as it is) Mr. Leno.

Jay made a ton of money doing stand-up, from The Tonight Show as its host, but still has the “every man” appeal. That’s the secret to his success: approachability.
What George Wallace and other African Americans had to go through in the thirties, forties, fifties, and sixties was shameful. Today things are a lot better, but racism still continues in the minds and hearts of some folk. I wish everyone would take the words of Jesus Christ to heart, which is in Jesus Christ there is no Jew or Greek, bond or free for we are all one. Unity in Christ should be our aim in life and living!
The hotel that Jay meets George is should be familiar to any fans of Rudy Ray Moore, as this was the place where all of his movies were shot. And, according to the movie "Dolemite Is My Name", Moore lived there for free for many years, as the hotel had been abandoned by the early 1970's. Nice to see that they have lovingly restored the place!
This kind of buddy buddy between Jay leno and George Wallace is exactly how I pictured all of America was like when I was 8 as a East Indian kid in Canada
Sundown Town was part of the convict leasing system after Reconstruction. So you talking about a segregated post slavery law that was in place for almost a hundred years.
Amazing! Jay was able to find a parking spot directly in front of the entrance of both buildings! And he was able to just glide right in without needing to parallel park!
An apron would save a driver while black also. One could say he was on an errand to the market to buy eggs or milk for a recipe. The intelligent white man didn't want to be a police officer, back then the police were dumb and cruel and mostly flunkies for bragging rights.
I used to work at Dunbar back in the day with Community planning economical development from L.A. Trade Tech. Also my neighbor Marshall Royal was a sax player for Count Basie's band. I was watching a documentary on pbs about Dunbar hotel n there he was playing in the lobby!! Ha! Ha!
I didn’t know about it until the movie came out. The fact that people could appreciate a person’s talent, yet treat them like a lesser human because the color of their skin. This was a time of great hypocrisy.
There are SO many things that our families didn't talk about.......if you have any elders left in your family, sit down with them and try to get them to open up about some of these things and take notes/record them. Our history is SO rich, but not being curated for the future generations. Peace, fam.
It probably has something to do with where you grew up? Honestly, I think many don't talk about these things in an effort to "move forward" & b/c they can be very tough conversations for most. In the South there are STILL places I wouldn't be caught after dark.

It’s in plenty of movies! 🤔🤷🏽♂️
You can buy a copy on Amazon.
The modern day green book is at your local chamber of commerce.😉

Love this episode..wow some history here..thanks for sharing Jay.
I just saw Jay on an episode of What's Happening!!! LMAO in the VD clinic with JJ.
My mother has told me a lot of stories about growing up in the 40's and 50's. We're hated for the color of our skin. What a shame
Thank you Jay! Great to see two legends hanging out. x
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM 🙌🙏😄💜💜💜💜💜
🎉 loved this I love George Wallace love his comedy and Jay Leno is really Funny too.
Great job Jay and George....
This kind of buddy buddy between Jay leno and George Wallace is exactly how I pictured all of America was like when I was 8 as a East Indian kid in Canada
Very informative video!!!
Shout out to Clifton ✊🏾🙏🏾
Good episode Jay
Fabulous video. Thank you so much.
When George said they had to put the Chauffeur hat in the back I couldn't tell if he was for real or playing! lol! he can't turn the funny off lolol
Ha! Ha!
Man this was funny and educational ! 👍🏽
Admirable piece.
Wonderful Show!
I find it strange that nobody in my family had or talked about a green book. 🤷🏾♂️

@@WonderfullyMade_Lex That's very true.
I saw George Wallace at the Comedy Store in 1977. He is one of the good guys.
AWESOME STORY ❤ GODS HARMONY AND BLISS TO US ALL
I grew up watching Jay...I remember Carson but when Jay took over it was an everyday thing and Conan in the 90s when he had that IN THE YEAR 2000 monolog (if you don't know, go find out) talks shows were great. And George, man that dude is still funny. I saw him on a podcast recently, just the whole thing, has me laughing
