    As a writer I can tell you that what Shayme is saying is 100% right. Characters need to grow and learn and it is important a writer take in many different perspectives in order to make the stories as believable as possible. Keep this stuff up I love your story analysis series :)

    Character analyzing is key to a good story. For example, Stephen King is a great writer because it's the psychology of his characters that make his stories work. It is genuinely unnerving to see Jack Torrance slowly delve into madness, and the story doesn't make it clear if it was caused by ghosts or his own demons, as we do hear about his mistreatment of his family and his alcoholism is a prevalent part of the story, while with Carrie White, as horrendous as the prom was, we understand why she did it and a lot of the book shows her in a more sympathetic and human light, making the tragically relevant anti-bullying message clear. And in Misery, the story works because we get to see Paul trying to keep a cool head in his terrifying situation while also looking into the mind of Annie, the antagonist, and getting a taste of her twisted mindset and logic. Sorry this is long but if you want to make a story work, especially ones like in the horror genre, it is important to show how your characters react to their surroundings because if the audience does not care about the characters, the story fails, and you fail as a writer.

    • @stephvandykeozzy
      @stephvandykeozzy 5 лет назад +2

      I love your point here. The books you've mentioned, I have read them, and they do deal with psychology for the characters. Stephen King is a brilliant writer for working on that for his characters. You are right in saying that the character should be shown in their surroundings and how they interact. It is important.

    • @PIB2000

    I made a character, well a side character, he was just part of tale which was being told. He was a farmer in the apocalypse. He saw dead bodies everytime he woke up, he was afraid why these bodies are appearing, believing someone has been dropping bodies where he lives. So he stays up but he falls asleep, sees dead bodies everytime. Until he got a friend. A body has appeared and he is in shock, believing it was his friend cuz who else woulda done it. But his friend tells him that it was the farmer who did it. The farmer couldn't believe this so he killed himself. He had the strength to kill but his mind couldn't handle such guilt and was filled with such grief, disbelief, and anger that he killed himself. He wanted to know who did it but he was too fragile to know the truth.

    Great video. That thing about actions showing the characters nature is something that is easy to forget and go on telling the reader about the character. I mean, it serves well for comedy with an overtly unreliable narrator, but not if you want to have the reader actually understand and believe. That is another good point you make, people need to understand not to sympathize. At the same time, it is true that in the name of diversity some writers make tokenism look classy. But I do admire writers that can manage to give life to many different characters each with their own goals, flaws, and journeys.
    I recently found a good video about contrasting characters shown by their movement and gestures. Maybe you'd like it. ruclips.net/video/jSxYqH_IXVs/видео.html

    The one thing I didn't agree with was at 1:57. It is not always the case where the mean guy is mean and the friendly guy is friendly. We (hopefully you've seen it) seen where the opposite is true where for some reason the mean guy is friendly and the friendly guy is mean. Also one's actions seen by others might make them assume how they are, but in fact isn't. The first that came into my head was Snape from Harry Potter. The characters and reader/watchers thought we was a bad guy of sorts when if fact he wasn't.
