it pisses me off that every single female super hero in both marvel and dc universes are always THE SAME EXACT CHARACTER. they’re all black widow. they’re all “i’m tired of cleaning up after you boys” types. they’re all bland STRONG WAMEN. when thor, star lord, loki, the flash, aquaman etc etc are all goofy and funny. there’s literally no “funny” flawed female super heros. there was starfire, but they absolutely ruined her in the live action Titans.

Strangely enough, I think currently the masters of writing likable female characters are the asian countries like Japan in their dramas and anime. Of course, not all of them are good writing as some series are made deliberately to be weak in development to capitalize on some other attribute such as cute comedy's, but ultimately everything right in character development is often seen there. One series, "Btooom!" for example does an excellent job of making a great male and female lead without sinking into the whole stupid battle of the sexes comparisons.

I say "Think about it. She kills the wicked witch. She frees the Scarecrow, saves the Tin Man, confronts the Lion, exposes Oz and frees the munchkins and goes on a great adventure. All the while the "Good" witch sat on her ass all those years and a 13 year old with no powers does in a few days what she could not do in years."

Honestly I feel like “Strong Female Characters” made me feel bad about liking stereotypical “girly” things.
I always observed that people bashed and hated characters that liked pink, dresses, and girly things, said they were a “bad example for young girls”. So I started playing sports, and stopped doing girly things, and I hated it. People should just let people like what they like, whether it be masculine things, or feminine things.

I had the opposite experience. Well, sorta. Never heard anyone bash any female characters. I was very much a tomboy growing up and never thought it made me any less of a girl, until I was constantly told by family and other kids that it did. I didn't see how playing Star Wars with the boys in kindergarten rather than princesses with the girls made me less of a girl (although I just haaaad to be Leia -_-) or wanting to climb trees and play-wrestle rather than... whatever the other girls were doing while I was doing that. I even found that several of them actually did like to climb trees, but didn't because it was a "boy thing". I vividly remember this really pretty girl (still in kindergarten) of a very wealthy family (as in, lived-in-a-castle wealthy. I live in Denmark) asking me almost in a whisper to show me how to climb the big tree in the yard, cause it looked fun but her parents would get mad if anything happened to her dress.
Got worse as I got older. Even my mother tried to dissuade me from doing so-called "boy things", despite her being even more of a tomboy than I was when she was a pre-teen and teenager. I would be very interested in learning how to put things together, but my mom's boyfriend would completely ignore me and instead call my brother over to show him how, despite my brother being completely indifferent to furniture-assembling and whatever else. I thought it was fun, like a puzzle to solve. I grew up to experience severe gender issues and I can't help but to think that the "gender is determined by behaviour, rather than genetics" nonsense had at least something to do with it (I don't have said gender issues anymore though, I just can't be bothered to change my account display stuff). The idea that there is a male list of interests and traits and a female list and if you fit more of one than the other, then you're not a real ~insert biological sex~. It's a great way to screw up children's perception of gender. After all, this is what trans-activists claim.
But regardless of which side you're on by nature, masculine or feminine, it all comes down to what you said. Just let people be themselves, especially children. A girl doesn't magically become a boy, because she chooses toy cars over dolls. She's just a girl who likes toy cars.

@giveagoodsong I kinda disagree... yes, TLOA was generally better, but I don't see where all the anger about Korra comes from... I mean yes, she WAS the "tough woman" trope at the beginning, but she had reasons to, as she grew up knowing about her powers, it was her very character even as a kid, etc... But being a woman was a part of her identity without being just what defined her. Then yes, the villans being males... let's admit that they were way baaaaadly written, agree. I just wouldn't call the entire serie a "feminist fest", that's all. It have soooo many other problems!

    • @alessandracastellengo9559
      @alessandracastellengo9559 5 лет назад +11

@giveagoodsong I haven't really seen anything of that... Watching Korra, absolutely no scene made me think: "Hey, that's how I, as a woman, feel everyday!" - and that should be the target if you want to organize a feminist fest! Same as watching TLAB, which, if I may, brought the gender roles up many more times (see Katara being a "mother", Toph being week, Azula wanting to be the Fire Nation heir - wink wink). And, last but not least, Azula, a young strong woman, was the main antagonist in TLAB, and no one complained! Yes, I see feminism in the Avatar universe when we have good and bad characters both males and females, but I don't see anything wrong with that.

Dorthy from the original Wizard Of Oz was a stronger character than any of the female characters in media these days. Yes you can talk about how she cries and acts scared, BUT what about the other stuff? Like how she threatened Miss. Gulch physical violence if she takes her dog away. How she ran away from home but changes her mind when professor Marvel told her Auntie Em was heaving a heart attack? You guys remember when she slapped the Cowardly Lion for scaring her dog? She even killed the Wicked Witch. And she was the only person of her group to stand up against the Wizard twice. Dorthy was strong because she had a desire and goal that is more noble than anything 3rd wave feminist can achieve. To get back home to the family that loves her.

We don’t need more films with female leads. We need more GOOD films that just happen to have female leads.
Taking good films that had male leads and rebooting them to have women doesn’t make them good. It means fundamentally missing what makes a good female character interesting.

@Zero Hero true. For a five ft person(male and female) to destroy a person twice their height they must either have supernatural abilities, be armed, or be extremely jacked (and I don’t mean like skinny woman with a little muscle jacked, I mean like bodybuilder who is visibly stronger than the opponent jacked).
It is not completely impossible for a small 5ft woman to beat a person twice her height but it’s highly unlikely and definitely not easy. And she’s definitely not gonna be able to fight several 6.5 ft people. My biggest pet peeve is actually when the author adds a weak character and makes them just magically beat several extremely strong opponents, like, at least give us an interesting way to beat this opponent by using things other than strength(like intelligence or agility because the opponent is obviously stronger). A good example of weak person beats strong person would probably be something like “viral hit” by taejun park and a bad example would be literally almost everything.

Brilliant. I felt the same way about Sarah Connor, who I'd argue is on par with Ellen Ripley. In the first Terminator, she was down on her luck, frightened, and relied on Kyle to save her until the end where she was dragging HIM to safety and in the end, had to save herself. Then in T2, we see she's become very unstable from fear of judgement day, almost murders a man, and goes through the arc of realising she cannot abandon her humanity, the very thing which makes us human. All the while doing everything she could to protect her son from the T-1000, even though there was almost nothing she could do, her maternal instinct drove her on regardless. Talk about a great character.
And not once did she have to belittle a man to do these things. She was great on her own merits.

  • @fist437

I liked it, but one thing I would add. Is that a strong female character can be a badass, if it serves the plot. If she has personality traits that show negatives and positives about her character through her being a bad ass. She can be feminine sure or masculine but only if that personality serves the plot. Equally so a compassionate gentle man can also serve the same outcome. Just that when we write flawless men or women it defeats the point in telling a story. Flawless characters on any gender say OG superman who was flawlessly heroic took away his sence of self as he could do anything until he was rewritten to be more dynamic. Superman at one point in history was a boring character. Gender isn't the issue even. It's just one note writing not knowing how to convey these characters with personality. There are women in the world who do not convey traditionally feminine traits. Because they're people there can be diversity but just having a women who is written to be perfect, strong and having no personality is just lazy. Basquez from aliens was also important because she was a soldier and had a sense of camaraderie with the men on her crew. It wasn't important that she could do what the men could what the other men could do. It was important that she just happened to be female, just happened to be a physically fit soldier. But was just as human and vurnerable as the other men. If she was written today she would have survived the Alien attack and would have said nothing. She was a dynamic part of the crew but was not traditionally feminine. Did not matter, she was memorable because she had personality.
I don't think women have to be written feminine. There is a large diversity of people on this earth. Just written well to serve the needs of the plot.

    • @Frogkhan915
      @Frogkhan915 5 лет назад +21

Right. I feel like this is taking the point to be "write well-written nurturing mother characters because that's what women be." Which would I guess still be better than horribly written flawless female non-characters but still really limiting, reproducing a stupid binary that forces men to be excessively stoic, etc etc. But yeah, you should be able to write a female tough soldier, or knowledgeable expert or whatever if you build in reasonably associated strengths and weaknesses. Hell, you can even write a story about a perfect goddess come to earth or something but then you better make the story around the unexpected problems and flaws (dunno, arrogance, exhaustion with helping people whatever) associated with that i.e. Buffy is an example of a somewhat invincible waif-fu technique using badass BUT her character is all about chosen one angst and responsibilities (although she is a traditionally feminine character in certain other ways).

    • @Frogkhan915
      @Frogkhan915 5 лет назад +6

@ Sounds cool! I'd say as long as one immediately forwards the flaws, whatever they are that character shouldn't be mistaken for one. I gotta say though, personally, any time I've tried writing a story I find it amazing how tempting it is to write a Mary Sue even though they're like the most obviously bad thing whenever you read one. One just wants to write about cool people and not be cruel to one's characters I guess. I think the thing I always try to remember is that while once we root for a character we do want to see them be strong and triumph and even just be action movie badass its the weaknesses and failures that make us root for them in the first place and actually connect with them.

I have an idea for a female character: She begins as a 'Strong wamen that need no man' but this attitude sometimes leads her to failure and defeat. Throughout the journey, she learns to be more nurturing to her allies rather than talk them down as a strong wamen - and in kind, they help her back. She becomes from an unbalanced act-strong character to a better woman to the end of the story.

I'm in the works of a film and one of my characters is like this: A girl who grew up in the bad areas of the city (Like the hood) she decided to become a strong & tough person so the no one could mess with her, she accomplished her dream but now no one wants to even BE near her (not because of her strength, but because of her infamous actions) and she became lonely, until she meets a young man who's never heard of her, and because of this they form a bond and she becomes VERY afraid of loosing him, meanwhile the young man teaches her about having fun and being more normal (like eating ice cream together or playing games together) and shows her how to truly be happy.
So basically, a woman who gave up on femininity is learning to be more feminine.

I related more to these characters than fake modern SFCs.
Princess Atta from A Bug's Life genuinely wanted to be a queen, instead of "I don't want to be a queen and help my people, it's always about what I want!" Atta taught me that it's okay to have insecurities and fears and how to work through them. She was a way better role model for girls who want to pursue politics or other high positions of power than Hillary Clinton, and I personally believe she has one of the prettiest Pixar designs. Oh yeah and she can fly.
Megara from Hercules taught me to not make deals with bad/suspicious people, the importance of sacrifice, and that it's okay to fall in love and not be ashamed. She also taught me the importance of redemption.
Mrs. Brisby deserve WAY more credit for her heroic deeds, especially in that abysmal Secret of NIHM 2. It's like the characters forgot about her or something.
Honey Lemon taught me that feminine girls can be scientists and shouldn't be shamed for being intelligent and girly. Also Gogo never shames her for being girly and actually loves and respects her. Gogo herself was a tomboy but she wasn't blatantly going all "Not like the other girls." Aunt Cass has a lot of emotional strength for someone who not only lost her relatives but her nephew in such a short amount of time, but she manages to remain stable and not let her losses pull her down.
Arcee from TFP taught me about the sad reality of PTSD and that is okay to have moments of shutting down (again she has PTSD). That does not stop her from being a badass through and through.
Everyone seems to give Sonic a lot of shit these days, but you have:
    - A batty jewel thief who also operates as a government spy and despite her suggestive choice of clothing is actually super classy and feminine. Her friendship with Shadow and Omega in the games and Topaz in Sonic X were highlights of her character and how ultimately loyal she is to her friends.
    - A pink hedgehog who is a total fangirl who spends her days lusting after the hero but learns to be less dependent on him while still keeping that crush. She admires him for his spirit and compassion, she cares about her friends, and despite wearing a dress all the time carries a giant mallet for a weapon. Also she can read tarot cards. Has her moments, but she stopped someone from blowing up the planet by simply talking to him and appealing to his good nature.
    - A cute Moe rabbit who is as sweet as they come but can also handle herself in a fight. When she had to stop one of her robot friends she was CRYING but still had to do it. Also, her little Chao pet is the equivalent of a mini nuke.
    - A flame wielding princess from another dimension who felt like an outcast due to her powers and status. Learns to be more friendly and open to others; sacrificed her life once to stop an evil God. She sees Sonic as an equal without a forced romance.
    - A sickly human girl who lost her life trying to save her only friend, the resident Edgelord. Her last wish inspired him to seek peace and remain kind.
Of course you have Tikal, Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, NICOLE, Fiona Fox, Wave the Swallow, Merlina, Shara the genie, Tangle the Lemur and Whisper the Wolf, all of them were great characters.
But I guess all of them are written off as weak all because none of them are quick to beat up anyone with a dick.

Amy Rose, Cream and Rabbit are often said to be useless, Amy for her crush on Sonic and Cream for the fact that she's six and doesn't seem to possess a lot of the 'offensive' powers most Sonic characters have. Chellis McElveen: But who even are these people? I’ve never heard of any Meg hate - quite the opposite, lots of feminists really like her as a character. And as for the criticism of female characters I’ve actually heard people say, often they actually have decent points (like them being badly written), or they actually like the character and their criticisms are admittedly minor, yet over people blow up other them. The very tiny minority of “radical” feminists who just hate on these characters for no good reason are the smallest group by far.

She was a highly trained killer but none of the men in the movie were portrayed as weak. They got the drop on her. She was buried alive. She almost killed in the beginning of the film. But I'm sure if the movie was made around today the character would have gotten to Bill unscathed. The male roles would have been pushovers. She would have ended up teaching the martial arts instructor something and she would have learned that 5 pressure point technique out of nowhere, just like Rey in the last Jedi. By the way I'd love to hear you talk about the Last Jedi in depth.

Luke in episode V is an impatient young guy who almost gets killed because he tries to battle a much stronger foe showing both underestimation of the enemy AND overestimation of his own abilities. He also gets destroyed emotionally and his last resort is, quite literally, suicidal. Only in episode VI does Luke become a strong character, yet he still has to face his own worst unsolved issues. Rey, on the other hand, has nothing of this: she explores her new, almost casual, condition by trying casually what took other people years to develop at lesser stages, she never has to learn, she never missteps anything, she never faces real challenges because she already is better than anyone eles, she has no strong motivations guiding her, she doesn't fight and she doesn't suffer, but everything comes to her naturally; but mostly, she never fails, she has no weak sides, no flaws. And of course this is why she is so incredibly boring. (BTW, Luke couldn't beat a training droid, the first time he held a lightsaber. Rey, on the other hand... Like I said, no faults, no flaws, only superhuman perfection, how boring is that?)

Also, you DO realize that Luke wore a blinding helmet, right? He couldn't see shit.
The woman very clearly knows how to use a weapon, and her entire life is spent gaining and adapting. Everything is driven on instinct with her in combat. She also does fuck up, several times in fact. She gets captured, even. Them having to go save her is what gets Han killed.
So why don't they just hammer the shit out of her about that? Because that useless pile of shit Luke never got it either. Everyone kissed his ass because he was a Jedi, and only in the final movie did he actually get any combative skill to his name. Other than that, he's largely been completely useless, yet he somehow seems to be loved by everyone for everything he does, despite losing every fight he seems to get into.
Oh, and don't forget blowing up a planet destroying space station with Force-Guided Torpedos, the only thing he ever actually did.
But yes, let's completely ignore the facts against Luke, one of the most beloved characters in the franchise, his absolute status as dead fucking weight except for piloting, yet everyone regards him as some great savior come to stop the Sith and bring balance to the force. Meanwhile, we'll rake Rey over the coals for daring to fight and defeat a half-dead Sith (explained by her survivalist upbringing), her ability to fix ships (again, explained by her job), and her daring to use a Jedi Mind Trick a brainwashed soldier with no will (something which incompetent, no-confidence Luke couldn't do, but Padawans could easily do in the Clone Wars show).

As someone who wants to get into writing, I'd recommend this video because it gives specific examples of how a good female character is written. Personally, I'd add a few detailed examples of bad female characters, like Rey (even if she was being shown often throughout this video). But overall this is fantastic.

    • @weldsj8847

Rey may be the best, most infamous example of this problem ever. That they gave her absolutely no character arc is simply stunning. I have heard of a bigger problem with 7-9. They never actually planned out the stories. A $4 billion property and they couldn't be bothered with a roadmap.

    • @erwin669
      @erwin669 5 лет назад +2

I kinda disagree, but here me out. The main problem with the new Star Wars movies is that they are not putting all the information you need to know about a character in the movie. You have to buy 3 other books and watch a cartoon on their streaming service to get a full backstory and motivations of a character. You read Bloodlines and your opinion on Leia can go from being a "strong female character" to a leader of a fringe terrorist organization who provoked a war pretty quick. Phasma is a joke in the movies but in her background book she is absolutely frighting and will murder you for the sake of holding onto power. When it comes to Rey almost everything about her is explained with little nuggets of information that is scattered across the whole of the franchise. It boils down to her being the way she is because the Force requires her to be. The Force is the literal deus ex machina of the Star Wars universe.

I feel like alot of the female playable characters like Jill or sheva are strong but not a man inside a woman body.
For example in resident evil 5, in-game only Chris (the guy) can give her jump boost through broken ladders or gain distance on long jumps but not the other way around.
she gets the job done as a female character, she is a strong and caring character but has weakness, she isn't as strong nor as fast as Chris. But her light weight gives her some advantage over Chris.
This makes sense because naturally males are heavier and stronger than their female counterparts but feminist can't accept it.

The best example I can think of for a strong female character is, in all honesty, Rarity from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Yeah, go ahead and get the laughter out of you system now so I can explain.
Rarity is a fashion designer. She loves pretty dresses and diamonds, and dreams of finding her prince charming, all of which are decidedly feminine. However, she's also a shrewd business owner, owning three boutiques, two of which are in Manehattan and Canterlot (Their equivalent of New York and Washington DC). She made her way in the most cut-throat industry through shear tenacity and force of will.
Plus, she followed a group into the most dangerous forest in the world to stop a mad near-god from plunging the world into eternal darkness and kicked a fucking manticore in the face.

Rarity is one of the best ponies in the show, and an awesome female character. If you really look at it, all the main characters in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic are great female characters in my opinion. They all have strengths, wether it be Fluttershy’s compassion or Applejack’s dependability, and weaknesses like Twilight’s perfectionism or Rainbow Dash’s ego.
All of them are still great people, err ponies, but they’re all portrayed as flawed. It’s honestly a shame Hollywood doesn’t get how to write female characters for a huge franchise like Star Wars, but a toy company making glorified toy ads in the form of a TV show, understands how.

I think your model for creating good female characters is 90% perfect. I want to leave open a space for the occasional hyper-violent and assertive woman. The key is diverse, creative, and well-written characters. As long as the character serves the story well and is not carelessly designed, I am fine with it.
I am pretty well-drawn to Black Widow who seemed to have taken the opposite route. She was a confident and competent femme-fatale. Text-book definition action-star mary sue. But as the films go by, they start establishing that she is incredibly sentimental and affectionate of her surrogate family. She even sacrificed herself because she loved them. She ain't the best female example, but she can join the pantheon of awesome female characters.

I like to write feminine characters, male or female. Aside from my own liking, it's because I like to write plots lean on details, and feminie characters can interact with details more that masculine characters. I firmly believe that characters should serve and lead the plot, so tokenism will be only in supporting roles. I can never understand stripping all femininity off a female character, it's just bad design.

Maybe it's because I want to show how reliant they are to him or that he is a super stoic badass compared to them, when the others run away he stands there, unfazed. I know he may not sound like a real person, but he's like that because he's insane from isolation for 70 years (he's immortal). But, that's his tragedy, he wants to die because he hates his life, but he can't. Also, how did this go from saying that most of my characters are feminine to me talking about my main character. Take the main character from The Shape of Water. That's a role I feel was written quite well.

Alita battle angel was soo good.
That's how you make a strong female lead. James Cameron knows what he's doing.

Not really? She fell in love with some random ass dude after like 5 minutes and the plot followed that boring ass storyline lol? Honestly people lick that movies balls way too hard.

If they (feminists and SJWs) so desperately want lead female characters, why don't they work towards becoming professional directors and script-writers instead of getting a degree in gender disparity or something. Same for running for President and any other post where you have actual power. You need to earn power and respect. You can't be so incompetent and at the same time, expect to be handed power.

It's easier to complain and sick the twit-er mob on someone and demand change than to actually work toward that change themselves
(Ironically, if they did do that, they might understand why it's better to show a character striving for something rather than having it handed to them)

“We want female leads and strong women in movies!”
“I’m not going to make this happen myself though, I’ll wait for people to do it for me because I deserve it for doing nothing!”

I think that if they really became professional directors and started making movies with "strong female characters", the movies would be totally 0/10 and laughed at. The reason would be abusing the fact that the movie is specifically made to show that female character and making her too badass or just too strong, just like captain marvel. Seriously, they made her so powerful that I'd doesn't make sense that she hasn't doo much in the movie. She just came at the end and delivered some serious blows to the villain forces and that's it. With the feminist-made movies, that would be the same thing. Focusing too much on one character and making the movie just mediocre.

To early now to make assumptions but I’m worried they’re gonna make bo peep another condescending feminist ‘strong independent wyman’ type who’ll throw in something along the lines of “ugh men, am I right ladies”.

The Kill Bill series for eg. gets it right for a strong female lead imo....it works on many levels .... she often fights against 'bad' women...(not just men), is empowered without need to reference to it on a 'gender' level...yet she is still emotionally vulnerable at times and driven by simple revenge ....Tarantino is very intuitive and smart when writing female parts...he creates very believable characters in his movies without the need to ever 'virtue signal'..., writes them as good and bad people ,strong and weak etc. always exploring and revealing a wide range of realistic female traits.

SJW's and Feminists never realized that Ripley was amazing. She did what no man or father could have done. As a man we understand the love of a child but we don't have that strong bond as a woman does from giving birth. That's why Ripley was able to save Newt and get out and why no man could have done that. She wasn't Superwoman or a Wonder Woman either. Just a regular woman who was a mother.

That is why Ripley is the one of best female characters of all time, and one of my favorite.People are confused about what courage and bravery is.Brave is not one who feels no fear,it is condition of lacking fear, brave is the one who overcome his fear in time of needs.
