  • A driverless Cruise car and a firetruck collided in San Francisco late Thursday night, sending one passenger to the hospital.
One of the firefighters involved in the accident claims the vehicle "lurched" at the intersection and did not yield to their truck approaching with lights and sirens. abc7ne.ws/45wT2rj

The fact that Cruise isn’t owning up to their fault (not having control for instances such as emergency vehicles) is enough in itself not to use Cruise. Just because the Cruise Car “entered the intersection on a green light” doesn’t mean they have the right of way. If it were a regular manned car then the driver would be liable.

exactly, if i were driving, continued through the light because it was green, failed to stop for an emergency vehicle, AND were hit by the emergency vehicle, i would absolutely be criminally liable

So shouldnt the title be "a driverless cruise car hits a firetruck"? I think personally that the cars sensors told the car it had the right of the way and those sensors didnt recognize the situation correctly with the firetruck approaching with its lights and sirens on.

I just remembered the clip of the kid in the BMW recently who slid across the median and miraculously didn't kill a cop who jumped out of the way just right.

@@danielelij6997 oh, well you guess wrong. It's a significantly more complex piece of technology than a washing machine, and made by entirely different people with different qualifications and motivations. With my BS in EE and a little help from a mechanical engineer, I could design a washing machine. While we're making silly and meaningless comparisons, keep in mind the same dude who can't figure out how to not put onions on your 'no onions' order is driving around a particularly dangerous giant hunk of metal.
The self-driving technology obviously has a long way to go. These are just road tests. They wouldn't dare try to deploy it on a larger scale. As long as they've done their due diligence with preliminary testing, they should mainly be dealing with unexpected edge cases. No one will argue that an incident such as this collision is very significant and bears immediate and serious investigation into how it happened, but people are stupid and shallow and immediately want to shelve technology without doing any of that. If it turns out to be due to negligence in their design or the serious incidents repeat themselves, sure, kick them off the road or require a person in the car to be ready to take control in risky situations. If they can't resolve the annoying traffic problems that some caused the other day, reduce how many are on the road at a given time. It's not that difficult to determine a reasonable response. Whether or not SF holds them accountable in this way is obviously not within my control.

The automotive industry has done a lot of research over the past century and came along ways into building a “significantly complex piece of technology” but you can go to your local dealerships and see that 2023 model cars can be in the shop for electrical issues just like old cars can. With your logic tho it’s, well this is a high tech complex piece of technology, we might can’t get all that other technology right that’s been out for decades after decades but we’re confident we can put this new technology of self driving can be out out on the road. Too bad the car cant figure out what a siren is, or maybe lights. Better update those algorithms, because you’re gonna want a “drive_on_sidewalk” or “Get_out_the_way” one eh? Maybe driver in the car wasnt doing their job eh, they are supposed to be paying attention (typical 4 wheeler)

Note that this was a side impact crash on the car by the fire truck. There was no way to have seen the fire truck until you are in the intersection to prevent the crash. The fire truck driver had the red light and should have expected cross traffic. What if someone (child or blind person) was in the crosswalk? Or someone on a bike? Or another emergency vehicle crossing? There is no difference. I think a jury would rule that fire truck driver is at fault for not being cautious.

A fire truck doesn't need to use their audible siren, but they do have to at least use their visual siren if they want to have priority. Otherwise, the fire truck's driving isn't an emergency, and they have to obey the rules everyone else has to follow. E.g. it's driving back to the firehouse, it's off-duty and being driven to the mechanic for maintenance.
