    Thanks Jerry,
    You have the best, easy to follow instructional videos on the 5100 and Dstar have found. I just purchased a 5100 on the HRO blackfriday sale. (Should arrive in a day or two).
    I have a Dstar repeater just a couple miles from home. This was a driving factor for me to look at Dstar. I am also an Icom fan. My business covers all of Georgia, North Florida, and Alabama. So I spend a lot of time behind the wheel. The dprs/aprs function will come in very handy for me.
    Thanks again for helping us out with Dstar.

    Thanks Jerry. This has been VERY informative for me! I am purchasing an ID-5100a this afternoon, to replace my old Anytone AT-5888UV. I will be revisiting this video, to set up DStars once the radio is installed. "73" KD0WGQ

      So, by now you should have your 5100, how do you like it? The manual kind of sucks in my opinion but the radio is nice. Double edged sword to have such a large display console that sure does make mobile mounting tricky.

      KG6HQD Jerry Hi Jerry! I am up & running, after a few false starts, having the wrong Anderson Powerpole connectors, etc.
      The 5100 is a pretty amazing radio compared to previous radio; I have played around with the D-Star / APRS overlay some, but find the Gateway is inconsistent in position sending (May trying a different gateway. Wondering if the DV gateway I have been using either doesn’t have a y’all enough antenna or is just not set up 100% on gateway side.
      I do want to try out Reflector use (watched that video as well) and also CS routing!
      73’s for now. KD0WGQ (Pete Miller)

      DPRS overlay is kind of tricky because some machine block it. I’ve been able to get my APRS signal posted through my hotspot finally but it’s still a bit elusive depending on what else I have going on. Fun item to play with and experiment though.

    Another informative video! I do disagree about the dead star comment. Personally, I've found it as active as any of the other modes, especially when you get involved in all of the various nets. The PAPA System lists some of the more popular nets every day on their website, but the are quite a few more available. Texas D-star tonight ref 004B 6pm, Trucker Travelers and Rvers tomorrow xrf002A 5pm, and many more. Also ref 001C has international traffic and can be a lot of fun. Check some of the nets out, decide for yourself. Thanks again and I look forward to another QSO, 73 - K6SPA

      @KG6HQDJerrySOTA  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Steve good to see you here! I hope that poking the dead star bear we get more activity aside from the nets. I totally agree the Papa System seems to have a great flow but I listen to both analog and digital every day and even connect to the 1C and other machines with little to no activity. Could be that for two weeks or so now that I've been on DStar it's just dumb luck, and that I'm used to a VERY high activity level on the one of the machines I use, that it just seem inordinately dead to me. Tony @K9ARV also told me his local machines seem dead on DStar so my objective it to shine light on that observation and try to use the frequencies as often as possible. Might even meet new people, like how I met you while talking to Tony on it :) Anyway, thanks for joining in on my channel and I hope to see you more often. I'm not offended by the disagreement and actually enjoy it because I like to hear other perspectives such as what you offered. Chat with you on the digital waves soon man 👍😀

      glad it helped! What was is you were trying to accomplish exactly that I was able to answer?

    • @arayboomer
      @arayboomer 6 лет назад +1

      One of the main reasons I bought a FTM-400 and FT-2 was because they had APRS built in. I cared more about that than the digital capabilities, but now that I use fusion a little bit, I'm more interested in digital stuff. There aren't any fusion repeaters near me since my move last year, so I use a SharkRF Open Spot. With that I've done some cross-mode to DMR, but haven't hopped on any DSTAR reflectors yet. I'll probably register with DSTAR tonight.
      I knew digital modes could share location information, but I was unsure if there was a simple way to share that info from a DSTAR radio to the APRS network without additional equipment. It's good to know that it can share the position data without extra gear. I think there are more DSTAR repeaters than digipeaters in my new area anyway. I wish you could still message with analog APRS users without additional analog interfaces, but everything has it's pros and cons.
      After reading around, one feature of the 5100 that is a big selling point for me is using the GPS to find repeaters. This seems like such a basic idea that adds a ton of convenience. The stuff you can do through a phone looks pretty awesome as well. Thanks again for the info Jerry. You've probably motivated me to buy yet another radio. When it comes to guns or radios and my wife asks me, "How many do you need?" Answer: "Just one more."

    • @KG6HQDJerrySOTA
      @KG6HQDJerrySOTA  6 лет назад +1

      Ha, that's awesome Ray! You can always do what many of us do and sell one then buy one so she has less to gripe about, if that's possible lol. DStar does seem to be the emerging trend and with multiple radio manufactures able to build them I hope it only gets better. Thanks for commenting, I really do appreciate hearing from others. So, when will you be buying a 5100 now though? 😎

    Currently I use my HT connected to my Cellphone using APRSDroid. However, I can't talk to anyone that way and I have to make changes to the HT each time. I am looking at getting the 5100A (a friend has one now) . If you can't get a DStar repeater and talking on analog or talking simplex, can you set up the second channel to transmit to APRS? Also, can you see other peoples location with the 5100A somehow? I am part of Jeeping clubs that we go offroading and nice to be able to find someone if we get lost or need to help with a recovery. ALSO, with APRS, I have had some luck with sending text message. With 5100A, can you send text messages to SMSGTE?

      Hi Paul, sorry fore delay I've been tied up on some things lately. I love my 5100A but it does have some limitations. no on APRS on B-band unless you find a way to connect a TNC and go that route with it. It's not really an APRS radio rather is uses DPRS which talks online to APRS. It really only shows distance and direction and IIRC coordinates but not a map. No messages like APRS either..the two are very different for sure. Hope that helps.

  • @justinbliske1402
    @justinbliske1402 6 лет назад

    I'm pretty new to D-STAR and DPRS/APRS. I for the life of me can not get my position to show up on aprs.fi. I'm using the 5100 as well; I followed your exact steps; things seemed to work with the gateways and such, but when I look on aprs.fi, I'm not seeing my call sign. I tried from a few different local D-STAR repeaters that I can hit from my location.
    Is it because I'm not moving (the 5100 is being used as a temporary base station in my house) I do have GPS lock and data. I'm just generally confused as to why it isn't working for me.
    -K5ZED

    • @KG6HQDJerrySOTA
      @KG6HQDJerrySOTA  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Justin.. did you search your call sign in the APRS.fi site? If you added a unique identifier such as -14 or whatever use that too. If still having trouble then there’s gotta be something missing (obviously right). Since you have the 5100 I’m on REF012A with quite a few of the guys from here and Twitter from 1530 PST - 1730 ish Tue to Friday maybe connect then as we can chat through it. What’s your call sign and did you use an identifier?

    • @justinbliske1402
      @justinbliske1402 6 лет назад

      I did search my call sign in APRS.fi and did not find it. K5ZED. I did configure the radio correctly and put in a -15 and changed my symbol and still no joy. So I may have a thought as to why I'm having issues. So The three repeaters that I can hit from my house, it seems like the owners all require registration to their ham club in order to even use Local CQ or Gateway. My assumption is they are filtering/blocking call signs. If this is the case, that is pretty terrible practice. I understand the need and cost to maintain a system, but what about Hams just passing through that want to use the repeater. It also kind of discourages users trying to get into the hobby. Anyways, that's my 2 cents worth.
      Well, I'm going to go the other route and buy myself a DVAP and a PI so I don't have to worry about it. Really bummed out that I can't use a local repeater though.

    • @KG6HQDJerrySOTA
      @KG6HQDJerrySOTA  6 лет назад

      Are you able to make a Dstar QSO using one of those repeaters? I assume you’ve registered your call sign on the web through one of the repeaters? I know it’s an obvious thing but thought I’d ask to make sure you’re in the system. Aside from that I’m not sure why you’re not able to get in. When would you be able to chat on a reflector so we could go through each setting to mirror it?

    • @KG6HQDJerrySOTA
      @KG6HQDJerrySOTA  6 лет назад

      So the one step I'm wondering if you are missing is ensuring you are going through a gateway. You would need to ensure you have the gateway repeater shown in both the fields the FROM section on the bottom and the TO section on the top field. If you have CQCQCQ or Local Repeater in the top field then you are most likely NOT opening up the gateway and getting your signal out. I think this is why I'm not getting my signal out now using the pi-star because I'm using the KG6HQD-B vs the KG6HQD-G signal command. You can check this by looking at 4:52 in the video and seeing what the R2 field shows. If it is the same as in that part of the video this could be your problem. Can you confirm your radio looks like the video in 5:15? The FROM and TO must be the same then kerchunk it to establish the link. At 5:24 did you get the UR:? ? It must show the ? indicating it was a good connection. If no ? then you're not making the connection. At 5:28 hit CS and ensure the R2 field shows the machine you are going through with the "G" telling you it's going through the gateway. If all that is working then you need to go to the GPS settings and ensure those are right. I'll wait for your reply to see if that fixed your issue then we can move to phase two if not. Let me know once you get to try it and if you want to make a short video clip and post it to Twitter and tag me @KG6HQD that'd help too.

    • @justinbliske1402
      @justinbliske1402 5 лет назад

      @@KG6HQDJerrySOTA - So it's been a while since I took a look at this reply; sorry for the long wait. All of my settings are the same as in your video. My CS menu is correct with the same R1 and R2 (with the G); I am connected to the gateway, however I still don't see myself on APRS.fi.
      As for the GPS menu, that is also correct. I'm set to position, I have a Symbol set with a SSID of -14 but I do not have a comment set. Time Stamp is DHM; Altitude is on, Data Extension is Off.
      I assume when I key down, I should see someone on APRS.fi in a matter of seconds or so? Either way, nothing ever does show up.
      One thing to consider; all of the D-Star repeaters in my area(nearly most of them in the State of Wisconsin), are ran by one group and most of them are perpetually connected to REF 19B. Does it make a difference if the repeater is connected to a reflector?
      EDIT: I have tried this now from several DStar repeaters in my area with no luck. Maybe my registration isn't completely setup. The repeater I'm "registered" with is W9BCC (Wausau WI). I sent an email to their info email address from www.rmra.ws/ because the registration URL on the D-StarUsers.org website for W9BCC doesn't seem to work and I'm not able to register with any other repeater. I know this, because I contacted a different repeater group and I was told that I was already registered with W9BCC.
      Honestly, I'm starting to get turned off of DStar simply due to the issues I have been experiencing thus far. I'm hanging in there and I'm hoping that someone reaches out from this repeater group to help me out.
      I also appreciate you taking the time to help me out KG6HQD.

    Why can't iCOM just implement regular APRS in their firmwares?
    That way it doesn't require a DSTAR repeater and can be picked up on the regular APRS frequency by any number of digipeaters out there across the U.S.
    Both Yaesu and Kenwood implement real APRS in their radios, why can't iCOM?

    I've been going in circles trying to use APRS on my ID-51 (HT). All the menu options are set up the same way as the 5100 according to the manual. As far as I can tell, I should be sending position info. However, because I am not near a DSTAR repeater, I need a DV Dongle and a reflector to use DSTAR. Does the DPRS info get sent out of the repeaters connected to the reflector? Is this even possible? I'm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze. (Jim - N2SUB)

      The short answer Jim is I don’t think you can. I’ve only been able to overlay my DPRS position onto APRS by utilizing a gateway repeater and one that allows for positional data. I have not been able to recreate the same scenario using my pi-star hotspot either so I base my answer on that. A big reason why I’m swapping out my ID5100 for the FTM-X400 as soon as it is back in stock with gigaparts. I still really like my 5100 so it will be placed in my shack/man cave. Hope that helps you, or at least let’s you know it doesn’t work that way. If you find out something different I hope you come back and share with us here.

      @@KG6HQDJerrySOTA I don't know how, but I did get listed on aprs.fi 1 time last night. I checked into the REF001C net, and I guess at some point while I was yammering away, I got relayed via VE3MHY-G. 4 packets. Maybe you just have to keep running your mouth for it to work, but I've proven it can be done, I'm just a little sketchy on the details.

      How were you connected to that reflector? Was it via RF on a gateway machine or hotspot?

      @@KG6HQDJerrySOTA Hot spot....DV Dongle. There are very few DSTAR repeaters in the area, and definitely none I can hit with an HT.

      Well then, if you did it do tell as I’m just as interested in how you pulled that off. I mean it makes sense if the hotspot connects to the internet and is in essence a mini repeater but maybe I have my settings on the pi-star not set to work right. Any details on how you did it would be helpful.

    I have been asking this question to every you tuber that I can find. Still haven't got an answer as of yet. What is the difference between an Icom 5100A and an Icom 5100E ? Also can you monitor D-star reflectors without transmitting on them? Kind of like using it to listen to other people talking ?

    • @KG6HQDJerrySOTA
      @KG6HQDJerrySOTA  6 лет назад +1

      The 5100E is the European version so without looking at the specs I would guess it prob has a little different freq range and maybe some language differences but other than that the basic function should be very similar.
      Re monitoring the reflectors, do you mean on like radio reference or just using the radio itself?

    • @TimLitfieldakaTimWhitfield
      @TimLitfieldakaTimWhitfield 6 лет назад

      kind of like you do a police scanner. When you just listen to the channel and not talk on it

      So I was checking out radio reference or broadcastify.com and found reflector 12. Try searching around for the area of coverage you want to find which reflector on and see what you find of interest to you. www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/5429 hope this helps you get started on finding what you're looking for

    • @TimLitfieldakaTimWhitfield

      But my question is can you just listen on the reflector and not transmit ? While using the 5100 ?

      @KG6HQDJerrySOTA  6 лет назад

      of course, it's not different than listening to any other freq

    This is innacurate, the YOUR field needs to be set to CQCQCQ. If it isn't configured this way, you'll throw the gateway in a loop constantly kerchunking. Worst case scenario your call will get blocked from that gateway. Also, set radio to -14 SSID. All other settings are correct. The best way to do this is with the RT-Systems software. See below. Info for this can be found on dstarinfo.com/dstar-web-calculator.aspxProgramming for talking on WA7HJR (port DV B) to (port DV B) YOUR::CQCQCQ RPT1:WA7HJR▪B RPT2:WA7HJR▪G Set Radio To:444.6375 MHz Offset +5.0000 MHz

      The point of the video was to get the GPS position to overlay into the APRS.fi website.... thanks for the info and I've since found several ways to use the ID5100. Truck SSID was set to -14, and maybe you are referring to me not bringing the "YOUR" field back after connecting to the gateway? Small things to remember with videos as they are easy to pick apart despite the great lengths we go to put out helpful info.
      FYI, your link was not found when clicked so not sure where that file is you were referring to? If you can check it then repost it I would like to take a look at the info.
      I will add I have since placed this radio in my shack and moved over to the FTM-400 for true APRS use. Now I pretty much just use a hotspot with the 5100 and the regular side of the radio as normal. Still a great radio and I'm glad I have it.
