We, Vietnamese, don't usually eat Canh Chua by itself. We have it with rice or vermicelli noodle. When you eat Canh Chua by itself is similar to eating hamburger patty without the buns. You can eat just the burger patty, nothing wrong with that but if you include it with buns, lettuce, tomato, ketchutp; it is whole new experience. Next time, try it with rice and eat it like Vietnamese in order to compare if you should eat Canh Chua by itself.
Yeah, is that look like this guy that I know but the guy I know is younger and he’s tall like that too but I think his that look like an older version of that guy so I would probably think his dad is nicer because the other guy likes to drink a lot
Hi TYLER, Its nice of you to say that your girLfriend's Mom cooks this CANH chua better than this restaurant. in Viêt nam, the Viêtnamese often cook Canh chua and CÁ Lóc together. Cá lóc is called snakehead fish. Vietnamese only use this kind of fish in the countryside. But in fancy restaurant this soup is cook with Swai steak fish.
@@ki5ngau ca mu or "grouper" is for rich people. Ca bong lau is for regular middle class. Ca loc is for poor people. It's cheap and can find everywhere in the countryside.
It's rare for a non-Vietnamese to be able to speak Vietnamese. The first employee should have graciously replied in Vietnamese. I recently went to Montreal, Canada where a lot of people are bilingual in English and French. In the past I didn't even try speaking French because I knew they would reply in English. This trip I was stubborn and committed to speaking French. People replied in French and those that didn't eventually yielded. Please don't apologize, but be proud of your Vietnamese language skills. Hi, Mr Tyler. Next time trying the cat fish soup with white rice 🍚. You will love it. You are right about the staffs. I ate a lots at restaurants in little Saigon and not too many restaurants with friendly staffs. There are more friendly staffs in Vietnam restaurants. Love your videos 😊
It's great that you share fish head with your dad. I feel like most American or westerner are so afraid of eating fish head and eyeballs. My favorite part of the fish are the eyeballs. Most of my American friends have never try VN food so when they try it, they really enjoy it. It's nice to share our culture with other people. Food is a wonderful experience and should be shared with friends.
Hello to Bentleys, This place does not specialize in this dish, it’s a com tam place, u gotta go to hot pot spot in Garden Grove, lil Saigon , Bolsa, cảnh chùa by itself unusual, need a lil rice w it 😂 Enjoy rest of ya day 🤚✌️
You’re spot on. Canh chua is a traditional việt soup, especially for southern miền Tây. It’s a light and healthy soup supposedly. I think cá lóc is snakehead fish but not sure. Btw the waiter should’ve served you with a separate bigger “soup” spoon. Great video as always!
You guys just ate a big bowl of noodles, of course you’re not gonna eat the soup with rice. Y’all already got your fill of carbs. I’m Cambodian American and grew up eating cảnh chùa too as the province my family is from borders Vietnam. I also understand some Viet and tried learning it. I think your Viet is awesome! I was just in the area to eat bánh mì for lunch. There’s a really good bánh mì place with a drive through called Carrot and Daikon Bánh Mì. Hay wah! I listen to Việt radio everyday when I drive home from work. I only took 1 semester of Vietnamese at Golden West College. Hope you had fun in the States bro! Ngon lắm! Mien Tay ơi! You know this dish is from Mekong delta right?
Hehehe.. You came in Com Tam restaurant and eat Canh Chua...But You need to eat this steam rice Tyler. Snakehead fish is Ca Loc. Wish you have Have Fun with Dad.
For me the súp same like not really good “ wrong restaurant, if you go in to more st , up to Brookhurst st and Edinger or bolsa st , so much good Vietnamese restaurants , the súp you eat there’ must have rice noodles come with, but any way, I happy to see you and dad enjoy your meal and enjoy your day as much you can 🤗❤️’ love you all “
Snakehead fish tastes like a trout. Often they uses trout in place of snakehead when you are in America. In most cheaper places, they use catfish. BTW, you guys were eating it wrong. That soup was seasoned to be eaten with white rice. The white rice mellow out the salty sour taste a little bit.
This place is "Cơm Tắm Đào Viên", they are specialized "Cơm Tắm" which is "Broken rice" dish. For "Canh Chua" you should go to a seafood restaurant, they have fresh fish for the "Canh Chua", ex: Tan Cang Seafood restaurant on 1st street and Newhope in Santa Ana.
Try Ngoc Suong restaurant for lunch. They have very good Vietnamese dishes and canh chua too. Usually order a couple of regular dishes and a soup pot. And some rice. Try Brodard in Fountain Valley for their Spring rolls.
Cá lóc is snake head, native to south east Asia. Viet Nam only inland people eat snake for spyr soup, souther people tend to cook with basa. And in coastal city like Nha-Trang, we cook sour soup with cá mú (rock fish or cod).
next time you're back in LA, take your dad to these 2 places, Brodard for nemnuong, and Oc & Lau for snail and many other seafood dishes.. And if you like lobster, go to New Canton to get lobster with XO sauce!
Canh chua is definitely an acquired taste. Growing up my mom love them, and I hate them, but for some weird reason my family keep having them, i would said they typically make it once or twice a week! (grandma also make a killer canh chua). People typically use them as an after meal cleanser (rice + something else, then the canh).
When you take that to go, the meat and veggie should go in one carton. And the soup in the other one. The staff seem pretty useless. They didn't bother to respond in Vietnamese when you speak in Viet to them, didn't offer to help when customer are struggling with taking stuff away, and just general laziness (should have been more proactive by offering rice or something when ordering canh chua). The one good things I see is one of the waiter makes the effort to find the English name translation for the fish.
Brotha please made a video what is the different Vietnamese food in little Saigon in California and Saigon in Vietnam ( price quality and service) thanks brotha
definitely need to order a side of rice next time. Otherwise drinking/eating by itself is a bit sour. Usually cooked with catfish, but any fish with less bones is better.
Well, the surprise and also some of them might not want to be on camera maybe because they don’t think that they dress up or have their make up on that day or something like that ha ha
