I put it down to them being low on Energon at the time. The mission Ironhide's team was on was to get Energon from Autobot City so they weren't at full power. And at Autobot City they were caught off guard and alot of the ones that get killed offscreen likely got shot up before they could take cover in the city.

Arcee showed concern that Hotrod and Kup were outside the city and would have been sitting ducks if they failed to get inside before the city went into Battle Mode. We later see Arcee drag in Wheeljack and Windcharger's bodies. They likely got shot up trying to get inside the city. We know from Kup's barricade (that Hot Rod drives through) that some Autobots were outside the city when the Decepticons attacked.
This just reminds me of the fact that in the infamous S3 episode, "Carnage in C Minor", when Galvatron and Soundwave fly together, they're holding hands. Yes, this is actually real.

Can we just talk about how good the voice acting is in G1 for a second?
I personally think it’s one of the main reasons why the show is so appealing, especially when combined with all the cheese!
I remember episode when Autobots and some kid were running through Acid rain that damaged bots but human was immune to it somehow. G1 Comicbooks had more serious tone but had its stupid moments too :)
