The reason the Yankees put on Cortez (the guy hadn't pitched in a month) was because he was a left handed pitcher with a great record against Ohtani. Historically his style messed Ohtani up when they met. Now when you switch in a pitcher, you have to wait one inning or 3 at bats before you can switch again, so the Yankees needed to get past Betts and Freeman before they could rotate again. It really wasn't a bad strategy by the Yankees, they countered Ohtani successfully, walked Mookie Betts, and put the entire game on a crippled Freddie Freeman. Unfortunately for them, Clutch is Freddie's legal middle name and he cooked them anyways.
