But I have to say, an ick for me is... full on hook ups in the morning before they brush their teeth. I just cant stop thinking about how bad their breath has to be the entire time, and it is NOT hot at all. Also, small text. I will literally not read something if the font is small..
Unless it’s a sci-fi or a dystopian, I expect your characters to have normal everyday names. Like miss me with names like Atlas, Dory, Ryle and Kenna (yes, I’m talking to you Colleen Hoover)
I can understand the “no way I just said that out loud” when it’s a heated situation or an emotional one. Since I feel like sometimes we forget ourselves and end up saying things we wanted to keep only in thoughts, realizing it a moment later. But most of the time it still feels so forced haha. Just to move the plot or reveal something that was supposed to be a secret.
I feel like enemies to lovers does work in sports romances (when they’re on the opposite team and fight for some big thing or something) but when it’s a romcom I think you’re definitely right!

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion or not but when the main characters meet on the first page/chapter I love that. It’s straight in no messing around and makes it so much easier for me to read
omg my biggest thing which just revolves books is when you let someone borrow your book, they read it, and they give it back and it’s demolished. like where you can see the covers been bent, they dog-eared pages, spilled water on it, etc.
i completely agree about long chapters! i love the inheritance games because of that fact. it feels like i can get through it and enjoy it without being bored of a giant chapter. it seems to be easily bingeable that way instead of reading something that takes FOREVER to get through
With the “mentioning tiktok”, Instagram, Snapchat, whatever social media, I feel like it may be super prominent in our lives, but with that it brings a tonnnnnn of negativity too. So when I read books to escape, I don’t want the social media side of my life being brought into that world
Ok. I totally get your point on enemies to lovers, and I think it’s been really badly done in recent romance books. HOWEVER, my all time favorite rom com, Pride and Prejudice, is definitely enemies to lovers. Sure, Darcy didn’t kill her entire family, but he did ruin the chances of her sister marrying well in a society where that essentially defined your future. Additionally, she (mistakenly) thought that he cheated her boyfriend out of an estate he supposedly inherited. And there was nothing she could do about it because of her station in life, and he taunted her for it… Yeah, I’d be pissed too.
And HEAVY on the insta love one! Especially when I had to read Romeo and Juliet in English class😭 everyone says that it’s so romantic and the best classic ever but in reality they literally KISSED ON THE FIRST NIGHT THEY MET😭 like that’s not how love happens I promise you English teachers it was not that good😭
My book ick is when people want book look like they were never used or brand new and then act holier than thou about it (and I’m talking about your own books not when you borrow them)
omg yes about the authors using slang in books!! It almost always sounds like how adults our parents age would mock how they think we talk to each other 😭
I may get alot of hate for this but oh well I feel like it must be said: My book ick is how in romance books especially there will be a scene where a character is casually SA'ed and then it's just brushed off and never acknowledged. Ex: randomly kissing a stranger you don't know/doesn't know you or using SA as a plot point like they did in Love & Other Words w/ Elliot and that girl. I agree that the first 40 pages can be excruciating😮💨

guys someone please tell me more youtubers that are like destiny! i’ve seen basically every single video and i love booktube videos but none hold a candle to the level of hers. does anyone know booktubers with the same vibe as her???
Idk if it’s the same vibe exactly but I love Sara Carrolli and Haley Pham so much! And they just give the BEST recommendations, these three are the holy trinity of booktube honestly
Hi! I love watching: Haley Pham (and Haley Pham Vlogs) (reads similar books to Destiny, is also fun of energy and joy) www.youtube.com/@haleypham and www.youtube.com/@haleyphamvlogs Sara Carrolli (also similar video style to destiny) www.youtube.com/@SaraCarrolli *e m m i e* (reads more classics, but also romance and fantasy. I like hearing different book recommendations from her)www.youtube.com/@caricanread Rachel Catherine (Australian, similar reading taste to Destiny. Also makes vlogs) www.youtube.com/@RachelCatherine
Forgot to mention: Jack Edwards (he reads quite different books to the above, more literary fiction I'd say. His videos are always funny though and it's fun hearing different perspectives on popular books) He has two channels - Jack Edwards www.youtube.com/@jack_edwards - Jack in the Books (more informal type videos) www.youtube.com/@jack_in_the_books Other honourable mentions Daniel Greene - Daniel puts out fantasy news videos, they are slightly more high / adult fantasy focused, but also very fun to watch. I found him through his paperbacks vs hardbacks video (ruclips.net/video/WzfIoeFG_rI/видео.html) and continued watching due to his bookshelf roast videos (e.g. ruclips.net/video/XpAaH87yBcQ/видео.html) Carolyn Marie Reads - Carolyn reads slightly different books than Destiny, more classics and literary. She makes lovely relaxing videos and also sells author portraits.
I love videos like this because i want to be an author! It’s so helpful to know what people don’t like so I don’t add them in and nobody reads my book(s)
Can we talk about the wattpad-phase? Because I published and it is ✨embarrassing✨ I was the girl in school that had their teacher proof read their „books“. Could also be a fun video idea. You reading our embarrassing attempts as authors
Honestly the balls it takes to ask a teacher to do that... I admire you a little, it takes a lot to put your art out there, no matter how good or bad it is
I have a friend who published a finished book on wattpad as her senior year capstone project. I mean, I'm genuinely proud of her for accomplishing that but she still cringes about it regularly bc she had to talk about it in front of a panel of teachers 😭
Mine is a weirdly specific one, but whenever foods are used in comparison to one of the characters. Some of the worst ones were "he was so hot you could fry an egg on him" (I'm not even kidding right now, some author and editor looked at that line and saw absolutely nothing wrong with it) and the ever-popular "the mushroomed tip of his . . . ". Like This needs to stop. Mentioning foods when trying to be sexy just really kills the mood for me.
My ick is when one chapter is like 2 pages and the next one is like 25 pages. I just wish it was like even throughout. Also The real people cover was certainly very normal in the early 2000s cause i loved the Gossip Girl covers but now it looks so cheesy! I loved this video! I also Crack my book spines it makes me feel more comfortable when im reading😊
Omg the sticking out the tongue one is so true I can never think of these but when you guys say them im like oh my gOD YES like I LOVE acotar but it is NOTORIOUS for the tongue out scenes and it makes me close the book 😭
My biggest ick would be a love triangle between brothers/relatives like... That is ridiculous and disgusting (Yes, The Summer I Turned Pretty plot I'm staring at you because WTH)
I actually bought a series it was, To All the Boys I Loved, the first two books actually had the removable stickers saying the books were movies on Netflix, I was so relieved I could actually take those stickers off.
Can we talk about the supremacy of half price books stickers (which always come off smoothly) and how terrible target ones are. I have 20% off sale stickers on almost every book I’ve bought from target.
Instalove irks me too which is honestly super ironic because my husband and I became boyfriend and girlfriend after knowing each other for 3 weeks (hadn’t even been on a date yet), then said “I love you” 3 weeks later 😂 But here I am being like “How are they in love, they literally just met” lol
I hate it when characters parents sell them off into marriages. For example in Neon Gods when Demeter sells Persephone to Zeus (a 60 years old man that killed his last 3 wifes) or Scarletts father in Caraval that is like "well I sold you to him so you now go to his bedroom with this men you never met before and let him r*pe you to make up for your misbehaviour". It makes me sick
The long chapters one omg I thought 20-30 pages was long for chapters but then I read the Miss Peregrine's books. Tell me why one of the chapters was 70+ pages long 😭😭 when I tell you I was so close to putting the book down and just sitting in silence
12:45 Yeah, they always put stickers in random place that are sometimes important. I had a couple where they actually covered up half of the synopsis....what a nightmare. Sometimes they was easy to peal, but others was gravity. I just never understood the concept
Yess TSITP old cover with the actual people is just creepy but the new cover with the show and faraway shot is great (even tho I’ll never read any of the books and prob never will but I lovee the show and I cannot wait for S2 to come out soon)
I dislike how many books end in proposals or have epilogues where they get married. Not every relationship ends in marriage and not every story needs that epilogue. I don't know I get a little annoyed at it to the point where I won't read the epilogue so I won't ruin the book for myself
The book clubs too! At least the Reese’s book club sticker is kind of cute and neutral… the Read With Jenna one just doesn’t go with a lot of books! Lol 😂
I crack spines and I'm proud of it. I have seen that photo where someone cut in half thick books to make it easier to carry I feel that was a one person band but that would be my ick. I hate long chapters too I'm reading Burial Rites atm and the chapters are like 20 plus pages long. I don't like when the same detail is mentioned in the book so much for example Daughter of the Pirate King loved the book but I didn't need to be told she could defeat any man like it makes it almost unbelievable. In a book group on Facebook there was a running gag of posts about characters letting out a breath they didn't realize they were holding.
The only thing with the third act conflict is that we’re all told to follow story beats and books that are without conflict towards the end are always called boring so

Rachel Catherine (Australian, similar reading taste to Destiny. Also makes vlogs) www.youtube.com/@RachelCatherine
Forgot to mention:
Jack Edwards (he reads quite different books to the above, more literary fiction I'd say. His videos are always funny though and it's fun hearing different perspectives on popular books) He has two channels
- Jack Edwards www.youtube.com/@jack_edwards
- Jack in the Books (more informal type videos) www.youtube.com/@jack_in_the_books
Other honourable mentions
Daniel Greene - Daniel puts out fantasy news videos, they are slightly more high / adult fantasy focused, but also very fun to watch. I found him through his paperbacks vs hardbacks video (ruclips.net/video/WzfIoeFG_rI/видео.html) and continued watching due to his bookshelf roast videos (e.g. ruclips.net/video/XpAaH87yBcQ/видео.html)
Carolyn Marie Reads - Carolyn reads slightly different books than Destiny, more classics and literary. She makes lovely relaxing videos and also sells author portraits.
@@Regpeg12 Yess!! I love Haley Pham and Sara Carrolli and along with those there are JustAli,Steph Bohrer and The Book Leo who are also amazing.
girl my addicted/calloway series is THREE different sizes 😭😭😭 it is so horrible but i don’t have the heart to repurchase bc it’s so expensive
Crying screaming & throwing up bc you answered to my ick suggestion 😭 ily des ❤️
I love videos like this because i want to be an author! It’s so helpful to know what people don’t like so I don’t add them in and nobody reads my book(s)
Can we talk about the wattpad-phase? Because I published and it is ✨embarrassing✨
I was the girl in school that had their teacher proof read their „books“.
Could also be a fun video idea. You reading our embarrassing attempts as authors
omg wait. i want to do that
Honestly the balls it takes to ask a teacher to do that...
@@itsnoterica that is a really cool project!!
It's a hot take that contemporary books aren't enemies to lovers but I ABSOLUTELY AGREE
omg you always have the best sweatshirts!! we are gonna need a sweatshirt collection or at least tell us where you get them from please??❤
Girl I'm literally obsessed with your sweatshirt
Mine is a weirdly specific one, but whenever foods are used in comparison to one of the characters. Some of the worst ones were "he was so hot you could fry an egg on him" (I'm not even kidding right now, some author and editor looked at that line and saw absolutely nothing wrong with it) and the ever-popular "the mushroomed tip of his . . . ". Like This needs to stop. Mentioning foods when trying to be sexy just really kills the mood for me.
Omg PLS my mom coming into my room wondering why I’m laughing so loud. Me every 2 seconds watching Destiny.
My ick is when one chapter is like 2 pages and the next one is like 25 pages. I just wish it was like even throughout. Also
The real people cover was certainly very normal in the early 2000s cause i loved the Gossip Girl covers but now it looks so cheesy! I loved this video! I also
Crack my book spines it makes me feel more comfortable when im reading😊
Omg the sticking out the tongue one is so true I can never think of these but when you guys say them im like oh my gOD YES like I LOVE acotar but it is NOTORIOUS for the tongue out scenes and it makes me close the book 😭
My biggest ick would be a love triangle between brothers/relatives like... That is ridiculous and disgusting (Yes, The Summer I Turned Pretty plot I'm staring at you because WTH)
It had never ever occurred to me to take the booksleeve off of a hardback book until I joined booktok 😅😅 like apparently that’s a thing people do??
Stop I’m dying over your shirt 😂😂
yesss when they mention tiktok or snapchat/ instagram i jus feel like they’re breaking the 4th wall
not the tiktok slang I can't, I had to take a moment when cal said "living in my head rent free" in final offer
8:07 “I thought we left that in the WattPad days.” Omg she’s sooo funny
I dislike how many books end in proposals or have epilogues where they get married. Not every relationship ends in marriage and not every story needs that epilogue. I don't know I get a little annoyed at it to the point where I won't read the epilogue so I won't ruin the book for myself
The descriptions were perfect!! When you talked about the spine breaking 😩😩😩😂😂😂 I cried
love your vids soooo sooo much, they always make my day
She should try the way of breaking in paperbacks where you take a section from each side till you get to the middle.
early yey! i've been waiting for your next video! i love your content!
HI DESTINY ITS MY BIRTHDAY TODAY SO THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD THING TO OPEN MY PHONE TOO 🎉❤
Lmaoooo I love ur sweater 💀💀
des you’re my favorite booktuber!!🤍
where did you get your hoodie because now i’m OBSESSED
One of my biggest book Ickes is when the book starts with a map! Ughhh! (Btw I don’t like fantasy )
Rom coms cannot have enemies to lovers tropes. PERIOD. I'm so glad you agree lol
i love cracking the spine of my books it gives me idk it makes them look like their read and loved
new subscriber, loving your vibe ❤️❤️
your jumper is iconic
10:40 GIRL, SAME - like Olive in the love hypothesis. I was like girl 👏 speak 👏
The only thing with the third act conflict is that we’re all told to follow story beats and books that are without conflict towards the end are always called boring so
