  • This year has certainly been a struggle for Northeast hardwater anglers. It's hard to believe the season is over in a couple weeks because for me it never really felt like it began. This was only my second trip out on Lake Champlain this year, as it has proven deadly for a few unfortunate ice fishermen in recent weeks. It's always nice to make the most out of these last few times out while staying safe in the process. Please enjoy the variety of fish species caught on this day!

Good job getting out there on Champlain safely and catching a few. Due to a combination of things, I didn't make it out on the big lake at all this winter, so I'm glad to see someone else had at least a little bit of luck. Out of curiosity, how long does it take you to set out 10 tipups? I don't think I've ever fished more than 7 at a time, and even that can take quite a while to set up -- especially if the fish start biting during the process.

Thank you very much! In the few times I have been out the bite hasn’t been on fire by any means so if there ever was a year to skip Champlain, it’s this one. I think I had everything set up in about 20 minutes or so, pulled everything out of my sled other than my auger, tip ups and bait bucket and dragged it behind me to set up. I forgot a scoop that day so I was pawing out most of the slush by hand, wouldn’t recommend that.

I was on just over a foot of ice, but it varies greatly depending on location. Most of the broad lake is open water
