A lot of that carbon on the exhaust valve is because the head breather dump into the throttle body. Route that crap to a catch can you’ll be glad you did
Took a friend's 2002 Electra glide from 88 inch to 98 inch 10:1 compression, Wood 555 cams, I found 2014 heads with electric compression releases with 2000 miles. Mild port, opened bowls for 1.90 Manley intakes and 1.625 exhaust, stock springs. Air cleaner and pipes/mufflers upgrade. Brian at Valley Racing in Beacher IL tuned the bike, Perfect! Over a 100 horsepower and over 110lb-ft torque at the tire. Later heads are the way to go! The compression releases hooked to the start solenoid didn't work. Dropped compression to 80 psi cranking. 185 psi wasn't an issue w/o compression releases so disconnected.
2005 heads are the only ones you don’t want, they were the worst flowing and corrected in 2006. You wouldn’t know until you swapped them out. A lot of guys swap them for 06 take offs and why there is an abundance of 05 heads on eBay.
I also have a 2015 CVO Rushmore I did the 117 big bore kit from Harley on and had the heads “freshened up “ and ported along with the SE cam plate and oil pump. A couple of guys I know that did the same kit and substituted the cams that came with the kit for 585s but did nothing with the heads. My Dyno came out at 124/128 however theirs showed considerably less power. I chose to stay with all Harley parts for the build just because I felt they work well together and it’s paid off for me. That was at 52k miles and the bike now has 69k miles on it. No problems. So that’s what my experience has been. Thought you’d like to know.
Where was this information 20 years ago, when I bought my bike? Or 5 years ago when I had it rebuilt? I treat my TC 88 as an "advanced Knucklehead", it burns a little oil, it's not fast but it runs and sounds great and I love it😊 By the way, I love your videos, I'm not into performance stuff, but still they are very well done and interesting!
Thanks for the great explanation. My 2005 1200 Sportster Roadster was advertised as having "Buell XB heads and cams". Now I know what the difference was. One guy on a blog improved his 1200 from 57 HP to 75 HP without opening the engine up...just bolt-on stuff.
very cool info. im running 02 heads, and have already dumped money into them well before the 05 changes. They work. At this point in my life, that is good enuff🤣
Love all the knowledge you share. Just put woods tw555 cams ,little clean up in the heads and replaced 96 to 103 jugs. Love the difference, more pull in 3000rpm and up.
Excellent information! I'm going to stick to my EVO as long as I can, but if I run across a great deal on a TC it is good to know the pros & cons of the early years vs later. I'm aware of the problems with the crankshafts and bearings on the later years, but had no idea they changed the heads for the better in 05. As an EvO guy it seems the best TC combo would be an early lower end with upgraded heads? Longevity, reliability and ease and cost of maintenance are my primary concerns.
That would be correct, but bottom end imo is definitely a far worse issue than the heads especially when you can throw whatever heads you want on one. Bottom end different story lot more machining involved.
It seem to me time 103s came out another of things were fixed a well rounded motor but my 03 88ci will continue to up grade I no all the history of that bike and how it was treated 20 years old and still runs show room .
Awesome and informative video, bud! I have an 07 TC motor , 1450 and I hear that adding an EBS (exterior breathing system to the motor can cause carbon build up to burn off plus it will make the motor run cooler and more efficiently. This is important because the twin cam design tends to run a bit hotter than its recommended. You can run tubing off of the exaughst ports through the backer plate of the air breather, join them together with a Y and send it down to a vented catch can. I learned this from DK Custome, a great channel, like yours.
I have to agree with the EBS controlling/eliminating the introduction of hot oxygen depleted air being recirculated back into the TB and ultimately resulting in carbon buildup changing your tune. When I did my 110 to 117 big bore kit on my 2015 CVO RG I installed the Trask assault breather along with their EBS system. The result is that I see absolutely nothing in the plexiglass cover and TB when I remove the filter for cleaning and wipe the velocity stack with a white paper towel so the EBS theory definitely works. Not a neck jerker after the EBS install but a noticeable improvement in throttle response.
I hand ported my pre 2005 heads. Spent about 2 weeks working them around little by little. About to go on the dyno and see if it was worth the effort. I mainly focused on opening the exhaust side of the heads because more or less the intake manifold pretty much lines up on the intake side.
I wish your video would have gave some info on what the 99-04 owners could do about swapping out the 99-04 heads for 05 heads. As you know 99-2001 had the magneti marelli system so switching over to the 05 head isn't a correct fit for the fuel system.

Excellent video thanks!! I've installed S&S 510C cams in my chopped 2006 Softail Standard, high flow intake & exhaust, tuned. Getting great performance. A really snappy bike with jackrabbit starts. Your video answers some questions that help to understand why my bike performs so well against older bikes.
@@gaknskk Not sure yet. Thinking of the Zippers Torque cam for a Stage 2, but really it depends on the runout on the crankshaft at the time of order, because if possible I would prefer a gear-driven cam. It seems to me to have heads ported and polished for $950(at S&S) and if a mechanic had pulled them and puts them back on at $160 an hour it is not worth it. If the heads were removed to do a top end build over to me at $950(at S&S) to get 5 to 6 HP it is not worthy. Especially if you have the new type twin cam heads.
Is it worth installing 96 heads on a 88ci? About to do a cam tensioner upgrade plus a TW6 on my 2000 FLHRCI and my friend has a set of heads off of a 96ci that i could use.
All the things you talked about are true but the biggest problem with TC heads up to 2006 is the exhaust port is to small an 883 sportster has a bigger port & if you want to go with big valves & you are running 7 mm valves the biggest you will find is 1.900 so if you want high lift beyond bolt in you will have to change the guides back to 5/16 where you can find valves past the 2 inch mark !
@@robbaar7035 Curious about the cost/benefit scenario: 02’ - 06’ - A Zippers 95” kit is a little over 3K. You can add a gear drive cam gear set for another $600. 99’ - 01’ - 95” is $3,800. I have s&s 79cc super stock heads. There is wrinkle paint in exthaust port. it collects all the crap. you would think they would do it properly. you have to sand it off when you open the engine again.
Nothing really serious to worry about, 01 has the Timken lower end which is awesome. The you can always run some top end cleaner decarbon through the inkae and clean up that carbon.
Does anyone ever question why Harley has design issues which given the fact that they have been making cycles for a 100yrs should not be happening ? Bad head design, oil pumps, lifters etc ??? Maybe they need a engineering dept house cleaning. Every manufacturer has a design that does not work out but we are talking about a 100 yr old engine design. They should be like a Lycoming Aircraft engine by now which are old school design but bullet proof. I dont get it.
So a fueling 543 cam chest is not to much for 2012 103 Road king. Full performance exhaust KNM big flow, air thunder, max tuner super coil fat screaming eagle plugs wires. iridium. Plugs
At what number is a cam considered high lift? I've heard generally it is considered.590 is the maximum lift on stock 05+ valve springs before needing to change them out. Have a set of Woods 222 ready to go into a 15 Streetglide Special and am considering CR 570-2 or S&S 583 for the 08 Rocker C.
@@johnliotta2583 thanks. I'm putting them in with stock springs. Until something "breaks" anyway. Bolt in is bolt in right. How do you find the 583's? Most people (Softails and Dynas) just go straight to the 585's. I'm more interested in torque than horsepower.
Stock heads sent to zippers or similar they will work your heads on a one to one basis instead of mass produced S&S or screaming Eagle one size fits all. I had zippers do my heads for how I ride my bagger in 2000to 5000 rpm
There is a big difference in the 2005 vs 2006 castings. 2005 yes moved to 7mm but still the -99 casting which exhaust flow was horrible. 2006 (-06) castings were a new port design that greatly increased the flow from the -99. So if you have 99-05 heads (anything with -99 casting) should be set on the shelf for a 2006 or new -06 casting.
I have a trike 2013 I put a stage 2 screaming Eagle with a torque cam. Dealership says it’s as far as I can go with it Now with that being said I was waiting to add the cooling system on it. Is this possible
Glad I have a 2018 M8... 8 valves, lighter, lighter springs, hardly any oil consumption.... 107 CI, balanced crank, single cam, factory oil cooler... it's all there, for the better.
Yes the 2005 and earlier heads will fit. Now if you're going from 2006 and later heads back onto 2005 and earlier you would need to use the flanges from 1999 to 2005.
A lot of that carbon on the exhaust valve is because the head breather dump into the throttle body. Route that crap to a catch can you’ll be glad you did

I have s&s 79cc super stock heads. There is wrinkle paint in exthaust port. it collects all the crap. you would think they would do it properly. you have to sand it off when you open the engine again.
QUESTION;
I have a 2001 & 2003 Dyna Wide Glide’s.
Do I really have to worry?
Thanks
Nothing really serious to worry about, 01 has the Timken lower end which is awesome. The you can always run some top end cleaner decarbon through the inkae and clean up that carbon.
@@GixxerFoo thank you! Appreciate you responding.
Full performance exhaust KNM big flow, air thunder, max tuner super coil fat screaming eagle plugs wires. iridium. Plugs
My question was is a fueling 543 cam too much for my 103 stock motor on that road king
Not at all, that's a great bolt in cam for a 103 for stock to mild engines.
I have s&s 583 on my 2015 stock springs. I called s&s before I bought them they said 2015 could handle up to 590.
@@johnliotta2583 thanks. I'm putting them in with stock springs. Until something "breaks" anyway. Bolt in is bolt in right.
How do you find the 583's? Most people (Softails and Dynas) just go straight to the 585's. I'm more interested in torque than horsepower.
you do not need to change springs with that, I have one your going to love it ,get a good tuner don't use true duels pipes.
Good show 😊
We need another what fits what 👁️👁️😎
Can I put a 2005 set of heads on my 2004 TC ? What would it include?
I have a 2000 dyna 88. Can I swap out the heads for the later model heads for the better performance and reliability?
Yes, they are bolt on. You will need to replace your old Intake flanges with 06-up ones. HD part No. 26993-06.
You sound just like the guy from project farm😂
Nice to know. Good Video GF
Hey, Gixxer, what’s that breather setup?? 6:35
That's a Feuling rocker box breather kit
Can you retrofit the later 05 heads to a earlier twincam?
Good to know
Hi again, what would you consider the best Aftermarket twin cam heads?
Stock heads sent to zippers or similar they will work your heads on a one to one basis instead of mass produced S&S or screaming Eagle one size fits all. I had zippers do my heads for how I ride my bagger in 2000to 5000 rpm
Always excellent content.
Would it be worth it to go to S&S super stock heads? Going to a 95 kit and 585 cams 99TC
You get about 100hp/145nm. But its start to go 3500rpm. I have this setup whit mikuni 42 on dyna. No low end torgue.
As always informative - Cheers👍
Good info, thanks
There is a big difference in the 2005 vs 2006 castings. 2005 yes moved to 7mm but still the -99 casting which exhaust flow was horrible. 2006 (-06) castings were a new port design that greatly increased the flow from the -99. So if you have 99-05 heads (anything with -99 casting) should be set on the shelf for a 2006 or new -06 casting.
That's a great point, the heads interchange but there are differences in castings and design.
@@GixxerFoo Tried that route, 06 inlet manifold will need to be modified as the early inlets are too short and wrong angle.
Can you bolt on 2005 heads on an ‘03 or ‘04’ twin cam? Love your videos!! 😊
Yes you can. They are bolt on. You will need to replace your old Intake flanges with 06 up ones. Its part No. 26993-06.
Can my 2000 Heads b rework to flow like the later heads
Shaved the heads down a tad, and larger valves !
CCan I put 05 heads on my 99?
EVO's forever.
Pretty interesting!
Great info. Tnx mate 👍
Ya thanks
Of course I have an 03.
No timken, carbon head, spring tensioner...
Thank you Harley-Davidson.😒
Is it atleast an anniversary edition? 😆
They're made in Chynna
It's easier to count what isn't made there these days sadly...
So will the 05 and up head bolt up to a 99-04?
110 heads and be done - 😁✊🏻👍👌
It's hard to find a set of 110 heads that don't cost an arm and a leg, those things are like gold.
@@GixxerFoo yes sir ; some folks think it all that bad with how many birds you kill with one stone . ✊🏻👍👌
I have a trike 2013 I put a stage 2 screaming Eagle with a torque cam. Dealership says it’s as far as I can go with it
Now with that being said I was waiting to add the cooling system on it.
Is this possible
15 sg spec 103 ho feuling 543 kit!!!
Glad I have a 2018 M8... 8 valves, lighter, lighter springs, hardly any oil consumption.... 107 CI, balanced crank, single cam, factory oil cooler... it's all there, for the better.
Shame on Harley for hiring flunked out engineers to design the early twin cam heads. The hell is the matter with them?
Only an engineer could make a bad idea sound good,, "what could possibly go wrong?"
Yup me two
can I fit 05 heads on my 01?
Yes the 2005 and earlier heads will fit. Now if you're going from 2006 and later heads back onto 2005 and earlier you would need to use the flanges from 1999 to 2005.
