Here's a section I cut during editing. It felt a little out of place, a little too generic, and it didn't really flow between points well.
"6. Three Tips for Writers Block
Here are three tips for how I deal with writers block, drop your suggestions below since while these mostly do the trick, they may not suit everybody and are pretty basic besides.
1. Do something else
Pretty simple thing. Writers block is like when you’re trying to remember something and it’s on the tip of your tongue. It responds to struggle by resisting harder. So just cut yourself a bit of slack and do something else. I’m a big fan of blankly wandering around the house talking to myself, it works especially well if it concerns others. In the meanwhile let your subconscious do the work.
It’s why everyone has their best ideas in the bathroom, you can’t do anything but let your brain run some file management.
2. Write something else
If you wanna keep writing cause you feel you got some momentum and don’t wanna break it, then shift that momentum elsewhere.
Maybe there’s a section of writing you’re working towards that you’re really excited about. Or you’ve got another little creative project on the go. Switch over to that and return to the troublesome portion later. Maybe writing that other thing will give you the answer, reveal a way through or around the block.
3. Think “How you X do it?”
This one is pretty hit or miss, if I’m struggling to find my words for something. I’ll ask myself how would such and such do it? And sort of mentally narrate what I’m trying to say in the voice of someone whose work I enjoy. RUclipsrs like Ross Scott, Steakbentley, Matthewmatosis, or even occasionally stand up comedians like Eddie Izzard, George Carlin, or Dylan Moran, then work my way back to my own voice.
I think the key thing with writers block is you don’t want to fight it head on, it takes a bit of guile and mental distance to get around it. I try to put myself in the best position to do so, and if it’s particularly difficult I take a break and shift my attention for awhile."
A point I did lose by trimming talking about audio and video editing is that I do find it valuable time to once again check writing. A lot of jokes occur to me during editing, and sections which felt good in writing do occasionally reveal themselves as shallow or repetitive. I don't think I could even take on an outside editor cause I'm paranoid I'll miss something which could be improved or excised.
Another thing I forgot to mention and regret about the Weapon Shop joke, I was hoping the bricks line would reveal it to be a somewhat ironic statement, I wasn't genuinely asking if people could just go and buy a gun from a gunshop, but by cutting the later reiterations of the joke I made that unclear and it felt like a question to be taken at face value, so that was a poor call on my end.
Please do the censored version for the hooligans video or upload to daily motion or some other site
Oh my vod, he's literally me.
Btw no, don't do family-friendly version of Hooligan review video. That game isn't even family-friendly in first place
Glad you put these here. Whether they fit or no they were worth absorbing
I’m looking forward to the sequel, How to Write “How to Write Video Essays” Video Essays
It's essays all the way down
That is very, very funny. You should become a comedian.
It's hard for me to put my finger on exactly why I love this video series so much, but every time a new Playing video comes out it feels like Christmas to me. Where a lot of videos about games never venture beyond "this is good and this is bad" or just people reacting to games in the moment, you're thorough with your discussions of games and have points that I don't hear anywhere else.
I swear, Snake, you are secretly trying to motivate me to put my didactic thoughts into video.
Cool vid, always enjoy seeing other peoples process when it comes to making videos. Looking forward to the Pure Pwnage vid.
All I can say snake. That April Fools video was one of the best "joke" videos I have ever seen. The scariest part of a good joke is when you can't tell if its true or not.
To think I got my start doing video reviews because I did a few simple videos close to a review format that had a similar file formatting style as yours when I saw you post it for a much, much more coherent finalized project in some Discord server. And now your note taking process is so much more involved than anything I've ever done. I might have to try some of the ideas I saw you talk about because I currently take timestamped notes and with some games, the breaks in the gameplay do end up looking bad after a recording session. It's not as bad with RPGs, especially something like Etrian Odyssey where you're drawing the map as you play anyway. But with Eternal Darkness, it was very noticeable.
21:36 "Do the best you can and be proud of what you make." If I could give my younger self one piece of creative advice, it'd be this.
Can't wait for your Saints Row (2022) video, if it goes exactly like i think it will, you'll rip it to shreds, if not you will try to find a redemption for the game witch is also really entertaining. I really love all your videos
I always liked how the Playing series is the opposite of many "dunking on bad game with superficial jokes" video reviews and actually looks at the perspective of what the studio was going for
Love when youtubers delve into their video making processes. You are a gold star on the youtube platform Mr Snakerer!
What an incredible player/essayist/reviewer/analyst you are. What you're doing is truly unique in the genre, and I am glad to have discovered your channel.
By the way, I am French, and no, if we see a british in a weapon shop, we shoot them. We kinda learnt with the whoke Joan of Arc thing.
This is the kind of content I love. Thank you, I've been wondering how I could go about making videos like this. After being recommended one of your other videos, seeing this one was a godsend.
Very informative. Thank you for sharing.
When I was taking notes for studying, I always kept my phone with a recording app nearby to catch that short one-sentence thought and every few days I went through the recordings and wrote it down properly.
I think my favorite setup and delivery moment in one of your videos was the rocks that never fell in the hunt down the freeman episode. It's an interesting start to the video, the video goes on to explain how the game fails to explain itself, and then the payoff at the end is the understanding that the rocks never fall.
Can i just say stumbling over your channel and starting to watch them was an absolute adventure. Hearing about such unknown games in such great detail actually made me buy and experience some of them for myself. Me being a superfan of the yakuza series also helped out. Please continue what you re doing, i am greatly appreciating it! 👍
Thank you so much for this! I'd just finally kicked my ass into working on a small life's goal of mine doing an in-depth analysis of the entire Final Fantasy series at one video per mainline/sideline series (so like, one for FF3, one for the Compilation of FF7, etc). And, since your videos have been a massive inspiration for how I wanna go about it, having something like this is a huge aid! Naturally, I won't be copying it 1-1, but it's certainly given me some very useful advice.
Best of luck!
Really enjoying this week's material in _Tehsnakerer's Video Essay Master Class._
Thank you so much for this video. As someone who's making an attempt to make longer, more focused videos on games I enjoyed, this analysis and breakdown of your style was incredibly informative and inspiring to me. Keep up the amazing videos, and I can't wait for the Saints Row review!
Thank you for making this! I have long since wanted to make videos on the games I have, but being boxed into the mold of "review" or "essay" tended to make the whole thing feel stifling. So again, thank you for providing these insights.
Thanks for the insight on the inner workings on your videos! Be assured that the effort you put in your art is not lost, and is very well appreciated.
man, you SHOULD be proud of that yakuza 5 callback. I didn't even realize what you did until getting to the finale.
9:20
Dude, your streams are a trip, I need to watch them more often (nlg tho, I rarely watch streams). Some of these conversations are so insane, it's like trying to remember a fever dream.
I'd use this opportunity to say that:
1) your channel is my hidden gem.
2) Even if you don't call them 'reviews', the videos you make are extremely useful, insightful and enjoyable to me.
3) You are often very funny, often in dry/subtle way that is rather lacking on youtube, IMHO. I think you also very honest in how you say things, and I appreciate it.
4) Thank you for encouraging me play Yakuza through the power of your words and effort.
5) Also is that the icon for Warlords I am seeing on the desktop?
Thanks for the kind words, I got Warlordocracy on my desktop?
@@Tehsnakerer There was an old game called Warlords, this icon reminded me of it somehow.
Once again, I appreciate your stance on perfectionism. The older I get, the more I hate it: I always avoided things, especially in media, that are lauded for their perfection, but now I even think them as inherently bad; I'm a bit of a perfectionist myself, so I sometimes struggle to practice what I preach, but I'm getting better.
It reminds me of the first video I watched on this channel, about the original Oaxaca: that game is far from perfect, but much more interesting than the average AAA GOTY Edition metal case.
Hey, I just want to thank you for all your content. This has been a rough year for me but I could always come to your content for comfort and a laugh. Thanks for that.
I do not know why I love “making of” type content so much. I even watch them for material i never touched, I also watched one for 50 shades of fucking grey.
Your vid for please, do subscribe ended up my favorite video of yours, and I expect this one to be up there just for its nature.
Having watched you for awhile now, I'll chime in on your comment at 7:50 about doing research now; I definitely think you made the right choice there. While I do like the idea of keeping your opinions relatively uncoloured by what other people have to say, I find the extra notes you make to generally be really interesting.
I always appreciate videos like this as a content creator that could help me sharpen my skills. This is no exception, and I'll be playlisting this for many references down the line.
This is a gold mine, thank you so much for making this!
8:49
ever since I first saw that "THE THING" edit, it has been the funniest goddamn thing in the world to me
I absolutely love long form video essays, especially yours, been wanting to write and upload my own ones so thanks for the vid man!
keep up the great work! :D
Dude the dedication here is astounding, your stuff is great and this helps explain why. To me, you're one of the best essayists on the site, so I'm looking forward to the next playing vid (Or whatever you try next)!
You releasing this video is perfect timing. Been working on my very first real video game review and I have no experience in anything but writing and playing video games. Not video editing nor recording. So your video gave me a nice kinda guide to look at to at least help me understand what I am doing. Thank you. You've been a big inspiration as to why I am wanting to game reviews! Hopefully I can get something out soon :)
This video is a godsend as a video creator. Not so much because I don't know what I'm doing (I've been doing it for nearly two decades) but rather it's cool to see other people's process and picking up tips and tricks that I can use for future content. Stellar work Snake.
Also to comment on Davinci Resolve 18, I'll say this, I used to use Sony Vegas (Magix now or whatever) and when I made my first desktop I switched to Davinci. Never looked back since.
Really interesting to see your process, makes me really appreciate the effort you put into these videos. Also good point about not going for perfectionism every time. I should remember that for my own creative stuff. I've always thought you are really smart, so guess I'll have to check out your streams. Keep up the good work!
Genuinely fascinating how in depth the video making process goes for a game called hooligans
This was a really interesting video! I'm someone who really likes writing about the games I like and I've definitely learnt a thing or two from people who've been knee-deep into talking about games for far longer. Plus I'm also really interested in seeing the other ways of going about writing videos in general. Thanks a lot Snakerer, your videos are always a joy to watch!
Loved this video! Something I've had trouble with is adapting the scripts structure to different games, as longer story based games are much easier for me to write and discuss then smaller level/ mission based games. I want to write them in a way that stills feels like "me" and not just another review anyone could have written. Your video gave me a good idea of how to go about it that I hope I can apply in the future.
Can't wait to see your Saints Row review!
Fantastic as always!
16:33
And I noticed that line! That's why I love your videos
Thanks for uploading this, it's very interesting.
Oh man, seeing that clip of the young ones at the start really makes me want to go and binge it all again, it's been a while.
I write for my job and want to improve my approach to creative stuff. This is super interesting.
I'm using the new year as my push to finally start making videos, mostly just so I can make myself write continuously, but also because I think it's important to do what you do, which is document the most random shit that you find entertaining or interesting. It's the easiest thing in the world to take the newest game and say anything about it (not to say I'm not looking forward to you murdering Saint's Row) or look back at the most popular game of whenever and say it was either good or bad. The hardest thing is to say "Hey, here's a game you've never heard of. Stick around for the next hour and I'll give you some laughs and some information about it." I plan to have an ongoing series of sorts that's just going down my movie watchlist and talking about them, and I certainly credit you as part of the inspiration for that, both for the general idea and that I want to use a more standup-type approach to humor than and edit-based approach to humor. So basically, thanks for giving us some awesome videos and games to wish we could play, if this comment section is any indication you're clearly an inspiration for a lot of folks. For my part, I do at least plan to play Boiling Point in the near future. Seems interesting.
cool vid! thanks for going over ur process, made me appreciate these things more as someone whos looking into covering the games i like seeing how someone breaks down that entire process at least gives me some idea on what to do! hopefully this can help me with trying to cover all the 3D castlevanias sometime lol
On the topic of Pure Pwnage. A while ago I was in a Discord server and someone said he discovered an obscure PS2 FPS no one had heard of. I asked what it was and he said "Timesplitters". I've noticed something similar with Red Dwarf and other games and shows. If it's not actively being revived or still getting sequels, then it seems to be forgotten or missed by younger people.
This was really great. Thanks. I write stories/poems/novels, so not video essays, but it was really interesting hearing your process nonetheless.
It's cool to hear about this stuff.
Great overview. Also want to add that keys for prior versions of Vegas usually go for cheap in Humble Bundles if people want an alternative to Resolve. Reaper also has an unlimited trial for people that want to use a more fully featured DAW for recording voiceovers, and has a great noise reduction plugin.
Oh hell yeah new Snake
Well, that was pretty interesting. I must admit, that to me, that this "post gaming note taking" method sound dreadfully long XD. But still pretty interesting, specially the fact you want to broaden the reach of the Playing. I do agree, i just love the way you use the format, even if (specially if) they are hours long ! (Also i'll never tire of this overly dramatic pause at the . of We. The revolution)
crazy how you just put this level of quality "how to do it" content up for free
i guess you really are an unprofitable adult
godbless
Cool. I've been thinking about doing something similar for the written reviews I've worked on. Laying out the process in a video and being honest about what goes into it all can be quite cathartic. Plus this gives me an idea of what to look for if I can ever be arsed to transition to video.
i do enjoy your work chief. a peek beneath the hoods been fun. cheers.
I’ve watched your content, for probably over a year now, if not over 2. It’s really cool to see how you make your videos. I think the only thing I wanna still really know is how you pick the games you play. As the games you play are always so obscure and I’ve wanted to try some more obscure games
I had a habit as a kid of picking up weird stuff and over the years I stumbled upon more and more niche games, typically cause odd, unique premises always grabbed me, I wasn't too big on following big news, I'd just pick through store shelves a lot.
Nowadays I can do the same on Steam, or look through obscure game threads here and there. People also tell me about them nowadays, and I generally play a bit then follow my gut, see if it feels like Playing material. That's a know when I do type deal.
It is getting trickier to pick games mind, after stuff like EVO, Brigand, and now Hooligans finding stuff that's both unique and interesting enough feels harder and harder as I go.
First vid i saw was Brigand Oaxaca i still go back to that one alot
love this!! feel like people often don't see the effort and research tht's required to make long form videos and while i don't know if i'll ever make one myself but i love the fact you've made a video going through your video making process ^_^
Thank yoiu, I love you ♥
Props on using a clip from The Young Ones near the beginning. A friend of mine back in primary school had them on tape or I guess his parents did. I would stay over at his and when he fell asleep I would stay up all night watching them. Looking back, it may not have been healthy for a 9 year old to lose out on sleep and have it replaced with a surreal comedy sitcom.
I feel like that opens the mind early
Whoa, I have a similar naming convention for my files when i wanna highlight key moments to show in a vid.
I'm trying out using a notebook to keep timestamps on moments where characters appear and to remind myself of things i liked and disliked as i play a game.
I like your method of logging times for story moments and your tagging system.
Thanks for this, I found it helpful as someone wishing to make similar content in the future. I've found your videos and Noah Gervais's work to be pretty inspiring when I work on my essay ideas.
I’m not even interested in making video essays. I’m just here for the funny British snake man
Reading this is almost making me want to do my own video essay thing.
in conclusion, I am still going to stick to my tried and true "get really drunk and hammer out points that directly contradict the established opinion on said title", but I'll steal your great quote of *sandpaper only works because it's rough* .
content creators UNITE, unfortunately i rarely see other CC's watch another CC..... even my friends CCs have to be told XD
hey im here for the next vid
The fucking taste of the upcoming Saints Row video in this one is just the ultimate tease.
Honestly dude. As long as I get vids like the YIIK one. Brigand one. (Got that game because of you vid on it. have a super love/low hate for that game.) and the EVO vid. I will be super happy. But that is only me. You only know what you need to do for your channel. So do what you need to do for the best.
I follow my nose but those kind of videos (Brigand and especially EVO in particular) tend to be the ones I'm happiest with and have the most fun doing.
The most important takeaway for me was that I need to take writing classes
I didn't take writing classes so that'd be an easy way to do better than what I'm doing.
Saint's Row having a kilometer-long EULA's bound to be the game's most funny joke considering how much the series tried to go with the whole "screw the Man, man" image, especially when it came to humour.
As much as I like your channel I know I'm not going to be watcing the saints row video I'd rather just try to forget that disaster even exists.
PS. I appreacite the God Hand music in the background
Lame
Neat
Snakeeater my kinda guy
Wait, Brigade E5 is in the plans?! Damn man, I should buy you a dinner or something first
I like how you refer to a 25 minute video as a short video
It's all relative innit
@@Tehsnakerer truth
Also hell yeah, other people remember Timesplitters
It's interesting to see how you've changed over time with how you're making videos. I try my best to make interesting stuff, though I will say my biggest shame is the fact that I don't think I'll ever feel truly original with their concept since a good portion was accidentally nicked from you. Now whether in practice that's the same or not is a different question since I'm not very consistent with the quality of what I do, unlike you, but it's still there.
So I guess the question is: Do you feel you've your concept of videos is original enough to be standing on its own or do you have any inspirations that have stayed closer to your format than you perhaps feel comfortable with? If so, how do you deal with it in your mind?
Also, thanks for the tip about separating recording goofs!
When I started out I was more inspired by stand up comedians I enjoyed watching like Dylan Moran, Dave Gorman, or Dara O' Briain than other youtubers. Nowadays I feel my writing is quite malleable, I don't worry about much beyond expressing what I think in a way that makes sense and is amusing to me and refining that as much as I can. My style just kinda developed over time as I wrote more and more. Originality isn't too much of a concern, and I don't feel like I'm treading on anyones toes nor are they treading on mine. I do watch a fair few other people making gaming content and if they're doing something I like I try to learn from it and think how I'd implement something like that myself.
I don't think you have to worry about nicking "my style", if you want to develop your own it will come with time, as you figure out how you want to express yourself. I think what's important is being self-critical without going so far as to tear yourself down.
@@Tehsnakerer I like the kind outlook and I appreciate the kind words. Thank you so much. Take care and enjoy the brief relief of a newly released video with Saints Row as well ♥
Yippee
You really need notability. It's going to help you a lot. Believe me, you'll love it.
I need all the help I can get to start making my own videos.
We still need "yakuza 6: actions have consequences"
I appreciate this so much, I’ve always wanted to make videos of this style about games I feel deserve that treatment (A specific one called Library of Ruina come to mind) but you’ve been a huge inspiration ^^
15:33 damn, that is one of the most Ni-dominant things I've ever heard... the parasocial relationship certainly deepens with this video.
Sorry to say I'm actually ES (and don't put any stock in MBTI)
6:34
That reminds me, is Evil Genius 2 on your radar at all?
Sorry to say not right now, it bored me when I played it.
Say Tehsnaker I was wondering do you record all your gameplay from start to finish ? Or does some part you just stop recording then record part when you need it ?
I record everything, never know when something interesting might happen
Why did I find you so late other Yters like Warlockcry popped off faster and sooner yet you were doing it for so long
I don't know.
It always comes across a bit weird how much people structure these, not the scripting mind, thats obviously needed, but the methods of note taking and diligently noting clips instead of just getting to editing and figuring it all out there.
I guess i just find the most interest in figuring everything out as i go along, granted your method is probably superior for the entertainment of people.
Also i've got the same "smarter funnier version of myself" in me as well, but for some reason mine only comes out in German class and for bizarre 3 language puns.
The excessive notetaking has actually saved me time in editing, when I finished recording and game and had tens of hours to work with, I hated the lost hours looking for those perfect moments and wishing I'd just logged them. It's like a stitch in time saves nine, kinda. I'm taking the time now to save it down the line.
@@Tehsnakerer Thankfully I've only had to work with small amounts of footage so far, not up to like 40 or more hours like you probably do, or I realize i need the footage while editing and go and make it then.
Only now realized i am a tiny fish heh
Ah you don't have to put it that way, everyone works out their own process, mine has been formed over hours and hours of looking for bloody clips I want!
Davinci Resolve is great.
...wait, did that clip at 6:11 contain a second visual pun, considering that fighter's name?

Okay but I gotta ask which line in the Yakuza 5 video are you referring to?
"It doesn't take a detective to see that something's amiss."
@@Tehsnakerer I'm sorry but in my Judgement addled mind (don't *judge* me they just came out on PC) this just sparks up the "Yagami-reference" part of my brain

Unrelated question. Will you make videos on kiwami 1 & 2? Or jump to 7? My vote is towards 7.
There's a portion on Kiwami 1 at the back of the Yakuza 0 video, and I'll have a Kiwami 2 portion at the back of the Yakuza 6 one.
@@Tehsnakerer oh fuck I totally forgot about 6. My heart is not ready.

I've been getting into video making this year, but my biggest obstacle so far is that my PC is very bad, which means it can't capture footage of any video game without looking like trash or running at 5 FPS. I've also been putting off a video I finished the script of because I've just been burnt out and can't do any work at all
Wops
