I'm with Stewart, less can indeed be more, and I really like the end result. So don't give up on colouring because when it comes right a simple bowl can become something really special.
Thanks for the encouragement Paul. I will definately continue to experiment - because I've got loads of sample colours on the shelf! Not sure I would ever buy a large bottle of one colour though! All the best. Andrew
Another great bowl, I think I agree with the other comments, the top would look nice the same colour as the bottom. Happy New Year and keep up the good work
Nice one , the bottom colour on the bowl is spot on, I would do the same colour on the top, but thats just my preference, its your bowl you do whatever you like to see. keep up the good work.
Hi Dave - thanks for your views on this. I do like the bottom colour, but then I also like the top one. I guess I will see what family and friends think before making any changes. Thanks for the encouragment - much appreciated. Andrew
Andrew, this is your second video I'm watching. During the 1st one I saw - I clicked subscribe - which I never do so quick :) The videos are GREAT. Everything is good - tech stuff (lighting, sound, the editing..), the practical stuff (writing down what tools you use, how you measure and work), BUT... the thing I loved the most is the honesty. You teach us all that it is OK to try something and regret it. Not everything comes perfect but we should try and we can correct things. This is modesty :) and it is this lesson that we try to inherent to our children - that we sometimes forget ourself. Keep up this excellent work and as for the music issue - (if you still think about it from time to time) I very much agree: some music as intro and ending and this is it. During the video it is not helping Good luck
Thank you for such kind and positive feedback. I do like to try new things - warts and all. I've just got a little sidetracked at the moment - building a little model steam engine and videoing the whole process for my metalworking channel. I hope to get back to some woodturning soon. Thanks for subscribing. All the best. Andrew
Love the shape and style of the bowl, turned out well. We are definitely in the same camp when it comes to colouring Andrew, I'm banned from deciding what goes on the walls when decorating the house! Good decision on the music; I quite often find music a distraction when trying to follow what is happening on the screen. Hppy new year and looking forward to the next video.
Hi Mac. Glad I'm not alone when it comes to colour. I try to avoid decorating if I can! Thanks for the views on the music - and happy new year to you too. All the best. Andrew
Happy New Year Andrew, Another good job you are doing well! My new lathe is a great piece of kit, just what the doctor ordered! LOL Have a good year and I look forward seeing more videos of yours. Lutz
Many thanks Lutz - and great to know you are enjoying your new toy! Happy new year and lots of safe turning. All the best, take care and keep those tools sharp! Andrew
Great video as usual, You have a very easy going, enjoyable way of presenting. You make mistakes and don't mind admitting them, a good trait to have. Keep the videos coming. All the best for the New Year from a fellow Yorkie.
Like that Andrew, good job mate. Great idea with the set square, I have to agree the indexing graduation system on this lathe leaves a lot to be desired, I rarely use it so it's not a big issue, but when I next do, I will use your workaround. excellent video. Cheers Mike
Thanks Mike. Your channel has helped me so much since I started turning less than 2 years ago. Now, I am so happy that I've managed to come up with a suggestion that you find of value too! I hope to call into Snainton Woodworking today, on the way to Scarborough. So if I can get a blank with good figure my next project will be stain free. Cheers. Andrew
Hi Andrew, great video and good to see the final result. Personally I like the result, particularly the top where it does give the ‘rustic’ effect you mentioned. I think it’s easy to over use colour on wood but you got a nice balance. Good tip on the indexing, I have the same lathe and was going to get an additional index disc to make it easier to use but your idea wins...!! Regards, Mick
Hi Michael. I'm really glad you like the rustic effect - friends and family like it too! Great to hear that you like the indexing tip. Rare earth magnets are really inexpensive on eBay, so if you already have an engineers square it's a very low cost solution. Even though the at1628vs has only got 36 graduations, I sometimes place a shim between the headstock spindle and the chuck in order to offset it slightly. By doing this you can create another set of 36 index points between the previous ones. Wishing you happy and safe turning. Cheers Andrew
Nice work, Andrew - and you show how easy it is to get rid of a colour disaster! I like the 'rustic' effect of the top - sometimes less is indeed more! I think the bottom colouring works - it's nice and warm in effect. Cheers!
Hi Stewart - I think it's one of the great advantages of woodturning....... If you make a mess of it, there is usually a way to recover from it somehow. Your channel certainly gave me the inspiration to have another go at colouring - but I just don't have the artistic flair like you. I've put a link to your channel in my description, as I am sure others will find your content very interesting. I have received very positive feedback from my wife and mother-in-law regarding the rustic effect - so I'm pleased with it at the moment. Cheers Andrew
Sandpaper was much in use in my workshop today! The great saver! Glad you're colouring has gone down well with those that matter. Thanks for putting my channel as a link, too. Much appreciated! Cheers!!
There are videos with no narrative and music is no problem on those as viewers can mute the sound without missing anything. And there are some (sorry Chris at Clickspring but I hope you take note) that provide a running commentary throughout... while playing the most God-awful repetitive music loops. I love the Clickspring channel... as I'm sure you do... but Chris's choice of music is the kind used to break down resistance to interrogation in Guantamino Bay. You made the right choice. I like your holey bowl but I think I agree with you regarding colouring.
Sycamore is a rather plain grained wood, and without an elegant shape, seems to produce bowls that are ok, nice, pretty...but not gorgeous. Your experimentation with holes is interesting and adds a bit to the product. The colors are ok, but as you commented, are not as fine as some other artists. As a theme, I'm not sure that the rustic look adds a lot to the product. But, experimentation should lead to novel approaches. This is the first video of yours that I've seen, and i subscribed so that I can watch your evolution. Keep up the good work!
Andrew, Beautiful piece of work my friend. I like the idea of indexing you used. I am one of those that prefers the music overlay. Either way, I'll keep watching. Take care now. ✌️ Jeremy
Hi Jeremy. Thanks so much for commenting. The backing music is a bit like colouring - very debatable. Btw i like backing tracks but it looks like most prefer not. It's difficult but i hope the rest of the content will be interesting. All the best. Andrew
Andrew the top and bottom may not both coincide, but individually they are gorgeous. What I've learned recently like yourself, colour takes practice so don't get worried by the first or second coats! It took me five to six overcoats till I was happy, then I buggered up the bowl and had to sand it all back and start again, then I sanded to thin and went through....aghhhhhhh. Martin Sabah-Smith and Stewart Furini I would guess have practised once or twice??? Your turning is great, just find a board and practise putting colours over the top of eachother, that way you won't wreck a nice piece like you have! I love the holes, great idea! Cheers Sean. P.S - Music at the start and finish is good for me!!!
Thank you so much for the advice. Great idea to experiment on a board. I follow both Martin and Stewart. I did refer to Stewart's channel for inspiration but I just can't replicate what he does :-( He is a real artist! Thanks again. Andrew
Andrew Whale Hi Andrew, there is no reason why you won't be able to replicate Stewart's work especially when you've done as many painting jobs as he has! Keep the chin up and just believe in yourself, if you don't who will!!! Cheers Sean
Thanks Barry - I do like to try new things out. The great thing with woodturning is that if you make a mess of it, you can usually change it and have another go. The original blank was 12" in diameter! - only joking. All the best for 2018. Andrew
Great job Andrew. As you have indexing on the lathe that was half the battle done. Not so sure about the jig as I suspect it wasn't that cheap, but fro those who don't I would guess you can use the indexing to mark the blank for drilling locations. Certainly prefer the more natural colour to what you were trying. Well done!
Thanks Paul. I think I paid around £3 for 10 rare earth magnets. I find them really useful for temporarily holding metal to metal. Also, I think I only paid £13 for the mag base which is also very useful around the workshop. All the best. Andrew
very nice piece and well done the color is fine too much color can kill the piece that looks quite alright to me you might want to try use a sponge instead of cloth to apply color you get less of a mass and fairies in tone
Nice enjoyable video Andrew, but I'm a bit disappointed with the final outcome. Personally, I like the underside better, to me, the top looks like you made a mistake, and that you couldn't get all of the mistake removed. Sorry.
Hi Len. Many thanks for the feedback. I thought that the finished piece wouldn't be to everyone's taste. It's grown on me though and I actually prefer the top to the bottom. Thanks again for commenting. Cheers Andrew
I LOVE the dog and the bowl, GREAT job.
Hi Judy. Well spotted - and the dog has a lot more character than the bowl!
Cheers

Cracking job love the colour
Thanks Norman - your feedback is very much appreciated.

Original plate Andrew! Good idea with drilling holes.
Many thanks Aleksey.
Good job Andrew well done.
Thanks Nigel.

I love the end result, you made a very original bowl, keep trying with the colour as you have had some good results, so don't give up!
Hi Maggie - thanks you so much for the encouragement. Glad you like the end result.
I must admit I quite like the rustic effect.
Take care.
Andrew
Andrew, very nice.
Hi Joseph. I'm really glad you like it. Thanks for commenting.

It is a beautiful bowl Andrew, very beautiful.

Thanks Dave - glad you like it. I must say I like it too!
Have a great day.
Cheers 🍻

Love the design Andrew but not fussy on the colouring. Thanks for sharing though, we can all learn from your experience.
Thanks Pamela. I know colouring can be very subjective at times.
I hope you have a great 2018.
Andrew
Another great job Andrew love the colour on the bottom of the bowl. Hope you had a great Christmas and New year
Thanks Paul - and I hope you had a goodun too.

Very nice Andrew if you pause the video on 19:19 can you make out the shape of a head in the timber or is it just me
Hi Donal - it took me a couple of tries, but I can see it too. Spooky!

Andrew, glad you dumped the music. I find it distracting. Enjoy watching your progress as a turner; it sort of mirrors my own as a 2 year turner.
Hi TheFish! Good luck with your turning and I hope you get some benefit from my videos. Also - thanks for subscribing.
Cheers
Andrew
Nice bowl Andrew , may i ask , did you have to thin the colour for the bottom of the bowl ? Oh yeah, Happy New Year
Thanks Mart. No I didn't thin any of the colours, and I put plenty of coats on the bottom.
Happy new year to you too.
Cheers!
