  • Bows can be made out of many type of materials and tools at low cost. in my previous videos, I built a few bows from old bicycle wheels . They can be as cool as bow made form PVC pipe especially when it can function as a normal bow or even can do bow fishing with it. I built one of bow with the inspiration from the Green Arrow bow, or Oneida compound bow. This time, I would like to present you my new Korean take down bow I made from an old rusty leaf spring which I bought at the local salvage yard. I. After several test shot at the target, i think one day, I should use it to do bow fishing a long with my crossbow. It's also fun for shooting this bow vs coke. The draw weight is 60lbs at 28 inches. The bow limbs are 4mm thick, the width is 2,4 cm. The thickness of the part of the bows to insert in the sockets that form the grip is 6mm thick. and the grip length is 10,5 cm.
    In my previous video, I built a similar bow using four coil springs making the bow strong enough to shoot small games or do bow fishing. And I also show how I made the arrow rest from a PVC pipe.
    In my previous video I show a bow that I made out of a Leaf Spring that I found an old leaf spring at the local salvage yard. It was a good bow and more powerful than this bow. Please check it out in this link : www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASlWj...
    Please also check out my similar bow making project :
    Bow made from bicycle wheel, arrow rest made from PVC pipe :

    The followings are related videos :

    Sir, I have 3 questions.
    - What is the length of the bow ?
    - is it ok to shape it by hitting it with a hammer without a vise or to soften it and shape it with fire? Will flexibility be lost and re-heat treatment required?
    - is it okay if I work on a soft carbon steel that has not been heat treated, rather than on an old hard steel, and give it a heat treatment at the end ?
    Kind regards

    • @backyard.craftsman
      @backyard.craftsman  Месяц назад

      thanks brother for the question. it's risky to forge the limb. making it too hard, it might snape, and making it too soft, it's not springy. so I would suggest that you grind it thinner by letting it cool down very often to retain it's springines before continuing to grind it.

      Steel bows tend to be inefficient for a given draw weight especially when using relatively lightweight hunting arrows, which makes them poorly suited to hunting. A bow like this would still be great for strength training and target practice.

    I don’t know how to weld, so I’m screwed there.

      I also didn't know how to weld years ago. Now not a professional, but enough skill to make things works :) To make this bow, there's another way to do it without welding if you don't want a takedown bow. You will just need to grind and bend one piece of steel to shape of the bow and put a hand grip on it without cutting it into two and building sockets for the limb insertion.
