  • The peach tree was planted in our garden 3 years ago and this is one of a series of film clips showing its growth since then.
A transparent cover is placed over the top of the arbour in December and removed around May. Its purpose is to stop rain falling on the tree during this period which can help to prevent peach leaf curl. Tall steel garden stakes firmly secured into the ground and painted white to blend in have been arranged around the arbour to secure it further and help support the cover.
The open area allows access for pollinating insects and a fairly good view of the tree.
Although the soil in our garden appears to retains moisture well the peach is planted in a sunny spot and a layer of mulch applied every spring to help with this. When the tree was initially planted out and the roots were establishing I kept more of an eye on watering to ensure the small root ball didn't dry out especially from when active growth began in spring. It is possible the cover in place could reduce the amount of water reaching a smaller root ball in the middle during the period it is in place. The roots are now well established though and routinely throw up suckers up to the frame of the arbour, which are cut down.
Although it is unnecessary to the cover is sometimes removed during periods of dry weather as here during flowering.
