- Here's a guitar lesson feauting Big Bill Broonzy doing his incredible, Hey Hey.
This tune has a lot going on, including some quandaries not often seen in your everyday country blues guitar peice. #9 chords? Slash chords?
Big Bill Broonzy was a musciain of the highest degree. Not suprised his jazz vocab eeked over into his county blues guitar playing.

The A works under the B7 because the A is the dom/flat 7 note in the B7 chord. Not usually in the bass. In the E7 chord it's used mostly as percussing; Bill heavily mutes the two low strings to get that characteristic thump on the downbeats with some cool syncopation thrown in for good measure. This is a good lesson, and I'm so glad you refer to these original videos of Big Bill playing it. Even Eric Clapton, who most people learned this song from, plays it a little wrong. I learned it from the first video (taken by Pete Seeger at a summer camp in michigan where Bill was working at the time!) years ago and still play it from time to time. Such a fun song to play! Don't miss the rest stroke during that slide up to the E#9add13 (thumb hits the A string for the slide and lands on the D but doesn't play it immediately) followed by the skipped beat and big thump on the low E.
Thanks for the perspective! I think you’re right too, his hand mutes so hard that you could play almost anything. Lonnie johnson would do that too. Appreciate you!
Yeh it’s a monster tune, I’ve been learning this one for months but I want to get it right and I’m nearly there! Love that guy 👌
Nice! Hope this one helped you in some part! Good on you too, more people should play hey hey.
this is so cool i've been listening to him constantly for a week or so which made it doubly cool that you posted this vid killer!
Dude, I feel you! His catalogue is HUGE too. So much stuff to dive into. I for sure wanna do some more lessons on him. Have you checked out much of his flatpicking stuff?
i like the way you describe this, it gives anew perspective to think from
Thanks Ritchie! Appreciate you taking some time to watch it and so glad you got something from it!
I first heard of Big Bill Broonzy from Rory Gallagher..good job....Slainte from IRELAND..
That's awesome, Rory's playing was just amazing! Thanks for saying hey!
Love your videos! Keep them coming
Thanks David! I sure will!
Solid! Thank you for another great lesson! You have great taste in music I look forward to the next video!
Thanks Chef! This was my first go at making something a little big longer (I usually try to stay with in 3 to 5 min), so I'm glad you're getting something from it!
Man, you did a good job with this video. thanks for the help.
Thanks! I'm glad it found it's way over to you!
One of the things that I really love about the blues, and one of the things that really makes it the blues, is the breaking of rules. If it sounds cool, it IS cool. How much theory do you think Muddy knew? How much theory did Blind Lemon know? Or Lightnin’?
I feel you!!
Thank you! Best lesson
Thanks Robert! Love this tune so much, happy picking!
I really enjoyed that. Thank you 👌🏼
Thanks Bill! Hope you got something out of it!
Hello. First time I found one of your lessons. I really appreciate your technical ability. But more importantly, your humor, enthusiasm and overall vibe. And man, can Big Bill pick it or not? One of my favorite guitar players and the one I have a bunch of trouble getting his fingering right. Cheers.
Hey I appreciate your kind words!! Yeah man big bill is my freaking hero.
Nice playing and lesson! Cool tune. Really like your tone
Thanks so much! It is such a cool tune isn't it.
I'm playing on a ladder braced guitar. Totally different instrument from what Big Bill would have played on, but glad you dig it! I'm playing on a Fraulini. Have you heard of them? Made by a great dude out in Madison, Wi.
@@kostringworks haven’t heard of them but now I wanna try one
Great lesson
Thanks Don! Glad ya think so. Good luck with it! Let me know if you have any hang ups.
Thanks! I just came across your videos and there is some great stuff to explore. But I really like this song and want to learn it
@@dmyerstc55that awesome! We try to have a good time over here!
Love your tutorial, great analysis.
Thanks Mike! Yeah this tune is so good, it still baffles me how deep his pocket is.
@@kostringworks Big Bill's guitar is in a museum in Chicago. Some guys on youtube went there and were able to play it, wow, guess it needs new strings and a set up now. How cool tho.
@@miketownsend927 really??! Dude I’m gonna roll through Chicago in a few weeks I’m gonna look into it!
@@kostringworks there you go, ruclips.net/video/aQDHdJVVvgw/видео.html
You’re just too cool like that !
You know it!
I just found my guitar teacher, but you are in another country!
Well thank the gods for RUclips! Glad you’re digging the vids Nick!!
Is that a nylon strung parlor guitar? Or wound nylon or something. Ive been wondering if they make something like that I could use on some old little parlor guitars I have that I’m worried to tune all the way up. and they just seem to have tight action with light steel strings no matter what I do. Also a 1945 harmony archtop that I would use them for if they sounded and played good.
It’s a fraulini parlor guitar. Stung up with medium phosphor bronze! You should try silk and steel strings, or possibly flatwounds on the Kay! Feels a lot nicer on the hands and they sound lovely!
This is a great lesson! I first heard this years ago thru Stephan Grossman’s kicking mule records. I’ve been playing it, in varying degrees of success, for years. Now arthritis has changed my approach somewhat so my question is. What is the scale length of your guitar in the video? I’m looking for one under 25 inches. The Gretch Jim dandy is a fun guitar and I’m always looking for other options.
Thanks Harry! Yeah these guitars are amazing. The scale length is definitely under 25. It’s somewhere between 24.5 and 24.75 if memory serves me! The company is Fraulini and the model is the Erma.
I mean, this is FINGERSTYLE......that means how you pluck the strings.....for a right handed guitar style that means right hand fingers instead of a pick. No mention of any of that!? but thx
Noted!
Hi nice video.....sort of. You play nicely, but too many sound effects and video references. You don't talk at all about the right hand, which is a big mis-step. Less theory, more right hand!
Thanks Steve! This is an older vid, so I hope I’m getting better all the time at learning how to teach on RUclips. I always appreciate criticism, thanks!
