Being born 200 years too late some tell me, technology has been a good thing, but in some ways destroyed a way of life. In saying that I have to admit it's had given many who don't travel much a chance to see the world through the eyes of another. That takes time and effort to do so. Can't thank you enough. There was a Congressional Medal of Honor winner who came from Thurmond. His name was Charles Rogers. He attended a school in Mount Hope called Dubois. There is a bridge in the Chimney Corner area of Fayette County that is named after him.

Sorry, just a little correction here. Its full title is Medal of Honor. It is awarded by congressional decree, but "Congressional" is not part of the name. That might come across as nitpicking, but I think out of respect for the sacrifices of the recipients we could at least call it by its real name.
My Grandmother was from Thurmond. The movie Matewan was filmed there and we went and visited shortly after and took some pictures of some of the stuff that was left behind from filming.
I was born 100 yrs too late. I would love to go back in time and visit these places. Modern times are eating these places.
I have often thought I was born in the wrong century as well.
There's something about ghost town that gives comfort

I grew up in Oak Hill from ‘77-‘85. After I graduated high school and went into the Army, my parents moved to Ronceverte briefly but returned to Fayette County and bought a place off of Hilltop Road, just up from The Cold Spot. They were regulars at the convenience store as well as the restaurant. Thanks for showcasing these out of the way places!

I love how you are exploring the history of these towns in the Great Appalachias. I appreciate how you respect the great people of these towns, their lives and their history. The town was not abandoned, it did decline to a small population when the park took over they forced people out. It is illegal to even repair steps or porches without park approval in the area even if they don't yet own the land. Hundreds have been displaced along the new and forced to abandon homes illegal to repair. The feds want your land and will steal it just like they did with the Natives.
Only 5 people? I live and work in NC but i have a house/hideaway in Quinwood about 1/2 mile from Crighton school, that town has about 250, what i really love about it is the quietness there! Besides a few dogs barking which i don't mind as my neighbor has a friendly pit bull so i give her treats when i am there and feed any birds it's as quiet as a library!! The drive there on a clear sunny day is beautiful and great to see FREE RANGE cows at the farms not jammed into factory farms.
I visited Themond several times when I lived there in the mid 80's. I loved it. The company store just across the track sold many souvenirs of the area.
BTW, Thurmond is not a scheduled stop for the Amtrack Cardinal (Chicago to NYC) but itvis a "flag" stop should a passenger want to get off or in the train frim Thurmond.
Right, no one can purchase tickets there but Amtrak does stop weekly. Thanks for watching!

Thurman was a great town in its day I seen it the first time in 1960 that I can remember .

Love your adventures! Worked with guys from WV a long time ago and learned about the values of people from WV. I'm 83 and think about things I wish I had done and the New River trails with a bike have always been in my bucket, but too old to do it now, so I really appreciate your tours of towns along the New River. Now I can see what I missed! From VA!

My wife and I drove up the road beside the handful of local houses. It's very overgrown and loops back over near the post office. There's a short-cut to drive over as not to disturb anyone (we never saw a person). Just when the road first curves to the right, there's also a left. It takes you over to the other side without having to drive all the way up the hill.
Hoods N Hollers' channel also covered Thurmond. I'm going to say to you what I said to him: If some American production company ever decides to remake the infamous British horror movie Eden Lake (2008) Thurmond would be the PERFECT place to film it!

Our favorite person who works at our Greenbrier Frank Mosley is from Thurmond...he died recently
I been to thurmond once. quiet town but did see amtrack do a station stop to drop off 2 passengers. would love to go back again and see more of it, just not in the rain...
My family and I went here 2 years ago. I come back every year since and I always see something new.

I'm from clarksburg wv. In what they call north central wv. The southern counties are way behind since the mines closed. Shame because all the people I met working in McDowell and Logan counties were salt of the earth help anyone people.

Thanks Bro. I've been keeping up with you for quite awhile now! You have brought back one of the most wonderful memories of my life! 46yrs. ago when I was 14, my aunt took me to Thurmond to board a train to see my birth father. At the time it took us 2hrs. to get there, on the old road coming in there. We sang from songs, on our am radio and had lots of fun before I left. First time on a train, we sat waiting for about 2 more hours. I was very excited but I've never been away from home. My aunt raised me since I was 2 days old and the first time far away from her. Was I in for a trip, the most beautiful scenery I've seen. Yet I will never forget the stores and buildings plus the most beautiful river I ever seen. Thanks for taking me back there once again! One day I too plan to, take a trip back there in real life! God Bless, (Glen). WV.

The water that you filmed has a combination of dirt and sand, and it has abundance of it. It is a common indentification that showed that it rained severly within the last 4 hours

Old timers used to say Thurmond in its heydays, "If ya didn't find a body on the tracks in the morning, it was a slow night".. They say the Dun hotel was burned down by a jealous wife and Thurmond had the longest poker game in history that lasted 20 years I think.

My maternal grandfather, Wilber Hayes Mann, managed a company store in Thurmond during the early 1900s. I think one of my uncles was born there.

Ive always wanted to visit Thurmond but you did it for me. I learned so much! i loved how you videod a bird's eye view atop the tracks coming in and shared each aspect of this hidden treasured city. The wealth they once had reminds me of Bramwell's history. Im also glad that there are folks still living there. Not as forgottened afterall. Great job, as always!

Surprised you didn't mention that Thurmond was the site of the filming of "Matewan." It loved seeing the Radner Boarding House from the movie there in Thurmond.

Wow!! So much history in a little forgotten town. You do such a wonderful job narrating the history of each of these areas you visit! I don’t know what it is about your videos, but it’s like they just take you back in time when things just seemed slower paced and I don’t know what the word is I’m looking for, but it’s like it just feels like time stands still or something while I’m watching. Another great video Josh, they are all fantastic from start to finish. From the music to the camerawork and of course your detailed commentary is so informative. When at school here in Scotland we learned a little about West Virginia and Appalachia and I have always had an interest ever since. There have been documentaries and programs that I have seen over the years however nothing matches your content which truly is the best. I hope to visit Appalachia sometime in the future, however shall be passing through Thurmond and other parts of West Virginia whilst on Amtrak's Cardinal on route from New York to California and I am really looking forward to it. I just discovered your videos I love them brings back so many happy memories of the New River Gorge hiking through abandoned towns
Loved the dynamic waterfall at the outset of this video; appreciate your research into the history of this all but forgotten town which, like many, has faded into relative insignificance with the march of time and “progress.” I, too, hope the intervention by the National Parks Service will restore this area to a semblance of its former glory and not prove to be just lip service. I could envision with sufficient resources and entrepreneurial investment, Thurmond could once again become a destination for outsiders looking for a piece of quiet serenity amidst a historic backdrop.
I mean, it's definitely a touristed area. Even on the rainy day I was there I saw dozens of people with out of state tags crawling all over the place. Plus, proximity to New River Gorge and Amtrak stopping, it's a busy place.
You just get better and better at making your mini documentaries. Keep on!!

Having gone to school at WVU some years back, I have developed an appreciation of WV and Appalachia in particular. Have been to Thurmond several times; always fascinated by it and love the drive down. Also have visited the national park while staying at Hawkes Nest. Very much enjoy your vids and appreciate them.

The park service has killed many areas that could have been easy to bring back with a little investment. New river now is illegal to develope or even to repair homes. Years ago an investor was blocked from building a great vacation site on the gorge. The adoption of the park blocked and now BSA is doing what he wanted on a smaller scale decades later.
At least you could have told us the name of the wing place. 😄

@@MountainRoots I was mistaken on location. It was Thurmont. Laying mainline pipe and dug through a patch pf land that a gas stations tanks leaked for years. Machine hit a rock and a spark and out I went.
