- In this video, Daniel Reach from the Leatherverse tries out our Basic Stamping Tool Set with Swivel Knife and shows us how to make a pair of tooled leather sunflower earrings, or a keychain. Making mistakes is natural. Knowing how to correct the mistake while leaving it in your project is skill! I’m at the stage in my leather craft where “tooling” is something I really want to achieve. I would really like to see more in depth tooling project videos. Daniel, I can’t count how many times my wife criticized my projects when I thought I was finished only to step back and look at it from a different prospective, my wife’s prospective and the art of give and take resolves the problem.

Excellent! Weaver Leather Supply has the best videos with the best artists and craftsmen Thank you all. I struggle cutting leather with a box cutter. For example, I fail every time I attempt to cut a rectangle from a piece of leather. A video on this topic would be much appreciated.

Great video. I would love to learn but need to get the courage up to invest in beginner tools. Really would love to see more beginner projects just explaining what each tool does and compare side by side and learning what tools are absolutely necessary to start with.

I really enjoyed this video. I’m a beginner who loves the art of tooling leather. The next video that I would be interested in learning about is creating patterns. I often have to print out someone else’s pattern. Specifically in areas of western or Sheridan style tooling.

Firstly I love your videos. I’m a beginning leather crafter and am having a little bit of a difficult time. I would love to see videos of very beginner projects. A video on how you transfer the picture onto the leather. I’m also a makeup artist who uses airbrushing to apply the make up. So I’m very interested to see how to paint the leather via airbrushing. Thanks for the video. I was quite intrigued about your painting techniques. I still need to go back and watch the leather tooling series. It started while I was very busy with other things so it's on my "gotta get to those" list.

I would like to see a video on making and using custom color antique made with the neutral antique paste. Especially any input on proportions when mixing up a custom color antique paste.
Would love to see thinning of different finish coats and proper cleaning of the air brush after different medians have been ran through it.

You should try it! It's an amazingly rewarding craft, and one thats easy to get started in.
Learning how to figure out where to shade in tooling would be a great video! I have a hard time figuring it out.
Exactly how the beveled is oriented to make the groove, how hard to hit the maul, and casing, casing, casing.

I am going to be doing a decorative panel this year for one of my 36 projects 2023 resolution so, a tooling video that shows some tooling design ideas and such would be awesome.
Help me understand what you're looking for. Do you mean a video that talks about potential project/design ideas and how to go through the creation process?
@@DanielReachCreations That sums it up pretty well actually. I have yet to do a tooling project and I wanted to get some ideas that aren't floral or western, which I see in overwhelming amounts when I try to search for ideas online.
@@jrtime228 Yeah, floral seems to be the go-to because its such a traditional thing for leather workers. I really like this idea for a video. I'll see what I can do about coming up with something. It can be hard to put something like this into a "process" but I'll see what I can do.

I use both all the time for inspiration. Just search for something you'd like to tool (I.E. Dragon) and see what you find. Then modify it as your creativity kicks in.

Would love to see a video on stropping tools and/or how to salvage hard, dry rouge

Would love to see a video of the same tools being used on different weights of leather, if only to see the difference in the impression so I can decide if I'm doing something wrong or if the weight of the leather is making a major difference.
A comparison of cheap and quality tools too (to justify some purchases).

Hahahah, Wonderful video. We all have had that one moment of "Uups..." In the a project. I once was almost done sewing a buffalo skull keyring doing saddle stitch when I realised to my horror I was supposed to be doing a cross stitch... Nothing to do but to cut and re-sew.
As a suggestion for a future video, how about a tool care video where you show how to care for some or the more obscure tools, for instance, how to sharp a hole puncher, or when to use the granite slab and when not
Love this channel, Weaver's Chuck is who got me into leatherwork, glad to see more faces of the company. Regarding design projects, I'd love to see something about doing feather/fur in carving.
Hey Daniel, I'm just starting on this type of tooling. Even though I've done the stamping, I thing doing a video on the steps leading up to the tooling would be good. Also if you would show the proper method of sharpening and stropping the swivel knife. Please and thank you. And as always a great video

Yes the basic are always good you may have different techniques .I have been working with leather for several years now. Eney one can learn new ways if you stop learning it is to late.

I’ve wanted to get started for such a long time but always worry about what to do if I make a mistake so I don’t start. It was very nice to see how you worked through this one! I'd love to see a video on how to sharpen edge bevelers and groovers, particularly edge bevelers. It is so frustrating to deal with a dull tool and the groove in the beveler makes it almost impossible to sharpen.
I would like to see airbrushing patterns and designs. More in depth tips and instructions. Pros and cons at an in depth perspective.
Suggestions. Show your technique for hand stitching so it looks good, the same,on both front and back. Thank you.

Sorry for the double post but I just thought of a good one. Can you show and explain the steps of finishing. After the tooling what's next? Resist, oil, paint, antiquing, sealer. Things like that. I know everyone has a different way but a basic knowledge of the steps will help new leather workers. I still struggle with it sometimes.

Thank you for showing us this project! Learning how to tool leather in and then working tooling into my future projects is one of my top goals for 2023! Also, thank you for showing us your "mistake" and how you remedied it. We are all human and make mistakes as much as we try not to. I watch a lot of RUclips tutorials and it is really nice to see the human aspect of this craft.

I have been tooling for a couple of years now, I would like to see more information on airbrushing. Specifically cordless airbrushing.
Great video. Designed for the beginner. Can't wait to try it. I'd like to see more basic tool projects, but add the next step stamping tools, a few that would make the project pop. There are so many, I don't know what I would choose and why one size over the other of the same stamping tool is best for the project. You covered the tips in detail, which is so helpful. A little too sped up on the cuts for true beginners, but a few repeat watchings will help me. All in all, a great start to a series perhaps? So many tooling videos are very complex, this was perfect. Loved that you took the project in a different direction once you found the earrings were too big. Thanks!
A painting video would be great
Nice video. My dad passed away last year. He was doing leather work since 1970. He was always told to start a business. But only did it for family and friends. Never charged. I guess relaxing for him. But i received his tools. So i tried starting a project for my two girls( small purses) and what i think is 2- 3 oz or 3-4. Very thin. We i got to the point of stitching. And it just blows out the edges. Big mistake trying that. All the patterns where cut and dyed. 😞. I do have some 8-9 oz. But dont have a skiver tool. My nearest shop is 45 miles away. And im unemployed. So thats out of the question. Wish i learned more from my dad. I have been watching Chuck on here did my first mystery braid and 4 strand braid. 👍
Sorry you lost your dad. I can imagine thats very difficult. Learning leather craft has to feel like a way to keep him with you though. For the 8-9 oz leather, you could make a belt for them. Just add spots and decorative rivets. That would add a lot of shine, which young girls usually love. Keep at it...lots of projects you can do when you're new to leather crafting.

Let's get into tooling. Something I've come to notice is that tattoo art makes great leather art. Yet there's not a lot of leathersmiths making videos with non traditional artwork. Maybe you can do a series of tooling tattoo art on a wallet or something.

New to the craft and I love it, even though I don't get much time to practice I still try. My recommendation is that I only have RUclips and other vids to learn. What would be a good starting video to get others interested in this wonderful craft?
Lol I did the same thing with making to big, except I was on the third pair before I figured it out. I was able to change the earring parts to correct it. I see a lot of people wanting airbrush tutorials. However like we talked before, you can easily make hours of videos on air brushing. I've been thinking on what would fit in a 15-20 min video that people really need to get started using it. Let me know if you want to have a chat about that

I would like to see a video on what are the common names of tools and groupings of what they are used for... For example: these are common lifting tools, backgrounders, edge stamps...etc. As a beginner, I have a whole collection of tools, some of which i have no idea of their intended purpose. (Think-serpentine stamp or camouflage tool-i had to come across the names of these on various videos, by happenstance) it would be good to have one video to check out for at least some basic utilization. Sorry so long, hope it makes sense. Thanks so much!
