So nobody asked for this technically, BUT I've always wanted to draw something Fruits Basket-related and one of my favorite non-canon ships in the show is Yuki and Kakeru! (No disrespect to the canon Yuki ship in the show, I just personally believe Yuki and Kakeru had so much potential to be a thing) I was so nervous to make this video because I feel like a lot of my viewers won't care for this bc its not canonical and basically fanfiction in the form of an animatic T____T This was a pretty self-indulgent video and made entirely for fun ^^;;; I normally don't like posting two MV's/animatics in a row because I know a large chunk of my audience is here for the story videos, but I hope you can forgive me this time! Something I haven’t seen anyone talk about. The fact that they are both boys means that Yuki can hug/touch Kakeru, which is a stark contrast to the relationship between Tohru and Kyo!! This would have been a really awesome addition to the story, just to contrast their relationships. Ugh I love this so much
I just started to watch Fruits Basket, and from the first episode I fell in love with Yuki. No offense to Machi, but it would be interesting character development if he turned out gay. He already has many guys liking him, and I love the idea of him and Kakeru. Maybe even like a slight hint of them together from one of the sequels, at least being friends.

I love how when Yuki is saying "Love is something I don't even know" he looks at tohru and kyo, because he knows they are in love and when Yuki is wiping his and kakeru's name off the board, shows he can't love him, openly. It's the little details that make this an excuisite animatic
i interpreted that line as Yuki's mom adamantly believing that Yuki was "lucky" to be born as the rat and that he was the most fortunate zodiac member. In her eyes he's spoiled and ungrateful but she's truly never done anything good for him 😩
I can understand but the ship likely would've been controversial at the time and especially in Japan. The manga was made back in the 2000s where LGBTQ hadn't been mainstream yet in any Western countries and would've been controversial then. And this is Japanese media, Japan is not a progressive country and being gay and etc. is only seen as a foreigner thing. Natsuki Takaya still has to write for the audience of Japan and write things within her country's own cultural context and not another's.

But coming back to it all now re visiting and re learning all the characters, I understand yuki alot more. I relate a lot to this song, at my old school (I went to a private Christian school), I was always known as the “good kid.” I never got in trouble, was nice to everyone, got good grades, stuff like that. In seventh grade, I had my first crush. An exchange student was in my praise band class, and I started blushing red like a tomato. I was so scared because at the time I genuinely believed that being gay was a huge sin and I would be looked down upon by everyone I knew. I tried to make the blushing stop, I was in a church of all places. This shouldn’t be happening. What is wrong with me? How can I make it stop? Can I make it stop? This will surely ruin my reputation... The next day the whole situation blew over. Somehow nobody noticed and I went back to life as normal, thinking I was straight as a ruler. The day before my graduation, I realized I had a huge crush on my friend who was also a girl. It was so ironic, I was leaving that school as a changed person, I could finally let go of the pressure to be straight and let myself be who I really was. I go to a public school now, I’ve only come out to two people and they have both been immensely supportive. I feel so safe and happy now, it’s amazing. I hope everyone struggling with what I am going through right now can accept themselves and be happy. Best of luck to all of you ♥︎

If your religion hurts you in any way, then I don’t recommend staying. A religion’s supposed to be something that comforts you and makes you feel better, not something that makes you feel like a prisoner. Or maybe you were just in the wrong crowd. What I did back then was leave religion entirely because it and my beliefs don’t really interconnect, and believing in something I don’t believe isn’t worth it. When I left it, I created my own code and rules of life I’d follow. It’s been great for me ever since. Though some people have been against me, I don’t really care. I’ve come out years ago, got some backlash, but I didn’t really care since there are people who supported me, and I think that’s all that matters.

Genuine question here, some people are on tiktok saying that this song is WLW erasure and, is it?? I don't view it that way, people make a lot of WLW song covers changing pronouns to make them MLM and vis versa (hell even with straight songs both parties do it) so I'm very cunfused?? It mostly stems from general lesbian erasure. As a lesbian I don't see myself represented as much as other queer people, so when a song like Little Miss Perfect is used for MLM or even straight couples, it feeds into lesbian erasure. Think of it like queer movies. How many more movies are there about MLM couples rather than wlw? It's a lot, so we want to hold onto as much as we can because we really don't have a lot.

And if you specify major characters (e.g. "this character has gay parents" doesn't count, because the parents aren't important characters) then the numbers aren't even close. For example, if you look at the GLAAD nominees for the past four years, more nominations were for WLW couples than MLM

The original song still exists, this is just a creative cover done on it that is entirely separate and allowed to be whatever the hell it wants to be. When genderbent, the song fits the Yuki and Kakeru ship perfectly, and I love what Caleb and Emirichu have done with it. Claiming this to be erasure is also erasing the beauty of artistic liberty and creative/expressive freedom.

Is it bad that I relate to this song but I’m straight.... I feel really bad saying that because I know this song represents the LBGTQ+ community and I respect & love my Friends that are part of that community. However, my whole life I was seen as Ms. Perfectionist because of how strict my parents are with me. One time when they found out I had a boyfriend they made me break up with him and forget about him. Telling me all boys are the same and I don’t know anything about love. After that I just shoved my nose into books, focus on studies to get Straight A’s and not even leave my home to make them proud of me. Now I have this genuine crush on this guy that I’ve never felt with anyone before but I keep pushing it aside because I’m scared that my parents may find out or all their saying about boys will come true.

Yuki is my favourite character in Fruits Basket and this hit hard. I adore Machi and Yuki but I also love Yuki and Kakeru, the bond between the two of them is undeniable. I just generally love how the student council helped Yuki to better understand himself and his relationships with other people. this was AMAZING! can't wait for season 3!

it is lesbian erasure, not because caleb is straight, but because this song was originally written about the lesbian experience and those struggles. it being changed to a MLM song is really invalidating and is lesbian erasure. a lot of people probably dont even realize it's a cover. there are so many MLM songs and it's really shitty when instead of using one of those, a WLW song is taken and changed.

I can understand but the ship likely would've been controversial at the time and especially in Japan.
The manga was made back in the 2000s where LGBTQ hadn't been mainstream yet in any Western countries and would've been controversial then. And this is Japanese media, Japan is not a progressive country and being gay and etc. is only seen as a foreigner thing. Natsuki Takaya still has to write for the audience of Japan and write things within her country's own cultural context and not another's.

But coming back to it all now re visiting and re learning all the characters, I understand yuki alot more. I relate a lot to this song, at my old school (I went to a private Christian school), I was always known as the “good kid.” I never got in trouble, was nice to everyone, got good grades, stuff like that. In seventh grade, I had my first crush. An exchange student was in my praise band class, and I started blushing red like a tomato. I was so scared because at the time I genuinely believed that being gay was a huge sin and I would be looked down upon by everyone I knew. I tried to make the blushing stop, I was in a church of all places. This shouldn’t be happening. What is wrong with me? How can I make it stop? Can I make it stop? This will surely ruin my reputation...
The next day the whole situation blew over. Somehow nobody noticed and I went back to life as normal, thinking I was straight as a ruler. The day before my graduation, I realized I had a huge crush on my friend who was also a girl. It was so ironic, I was leaving that school as a changed person, I could finally let go of the pressure to be straight and let myself be who I really was. I go to a public school now, I’ve only come out to two people and they have both been immensely supportive. I feel so safe and happy now, it’s amazing.

If your religion hurts you in any way, then I don’t recommend staying. A religion’s supposed to be something that comforts you and makes you feel better, not something that makes you feel like a prisoner. Or maybe you were just in the wrong crowd. What I did back then was leave religion entirely because it and my beliefs don’t really interconnect, and believing in something I don’t believe isn’t worth it. When I left it, I created my own code and rules of life I’d follow. It’s been great for me ever since. Though some people have been against me, I don’t really care. I’ve come out years ago, got some backlash, but I didn’t really care since there are people who supported me, and I think that’s all that matters.

Genuine question here, some people are on tiktok saying that this song is WLW erasure and, is it?? I don't view it that way, people make a lot of WLW song covers changing pronouns to make them MLM and vis versa (hell even with straight songs both parties do it) so I'm very cunfused?? Think of it like queer movies. How many more movies are there about MLM couples rather than wlw? It's a lot, so we want to hold onto as much as we can because we really don't have a lot.

And if you specify major characters (e.g. "this character has gay parents" doesn't count, because the parents aren't important characters) then the numbers aren't even close. Is it bad that I relate to this song but I’m straight.... I feel really bad saying that because I know this song represents the LBGTQ+ community and I respect & love my Friends that are part of that community.
However, my whole life I was seen as Ms. Perfectionist because of how strict my parents are with me. One time when they found out I had a boyfriend they made me break up with him and forget about him. Telling me all boys are the same and I don’t know anything about love. Yuki is my favourite character in Fruits Basket and this hit hard. I adore Machi and Yuki but I also love Yuki and Kakeru, the bond between the two of them is undeniable. I just generally love how the student council helped Yuki to better understand himself and his relationships with other people. this was AMAZING! can't wait for season 3!

I think they're calling it WLW erasure since the song was originally WLW, while this version was altered to be MLM
it is lesbian erasure, not because caleb is straight, but because this song was originally written about the lesbian experience and those struggles. it being changed to a MLM song is really invalidating and is lesbian erasure. a lot of people probably dont even realize it's a cover. there are so many MLM songs and it's really shitty when instead of using one of those, a WLW song is taken and changed.
