Thats a good comment and fair point. I would suggest that you try to do any "fixing" with it at a larger scale as at very tiny scales Blender does seem to have some issues. It might also help you to work in metres instead of millimetres. Ive got a bit of an explanation of why here: ruclips.net/video/hUfPvHPdgR4/видео.html
Remember that files from Thingiverse and Pritables are mostly made to print on a 3D printer. And for an STL exported from Blender to work for 3D print, you need the units in Blender to be set to .001
What's the best way to add geometry or vertices or ngons (im not sure what the thing is called) if I wanted to stretch push and pull in certain areas to deform them using proportional editing? Like say if I wanted to make certain protrusions more bulbous but on a very flat surface that doesn't have very many manipulatable dots?
Lots of options but it depends on the mesh. You could subdivide that area, use a subdivision surface modifier (this will try to subdivide everything though so could cause issues), remesh the object or use a sculpting tool to do it. Sorry I can't be more specific but there's lots of options depending on what the object is like.
One thing I have struggled with with imported files.. they are "hollow" with internal geometry. Is there an easy way to fix this and make them appear as a solid object?
Thats a great question and depends on how well they have been made. If you follow the steps in the video with 3D builder it should solve most of issues in my experience. If not then I have found it best to separate them into parts jn blender (you can normally achieve this by selecting the object, going into edit mode, selecting everything with "a" then "p" and select "loose parts". Then you can make the individual bits solid by adding in any faces if needed and booleaning them together.
Of course. Here is the link to the discounted set together, which I'd suggest going for as if you're going to get one you'll end up wanting both: blendermarket.com/products/hard-ops--boxcutter-ultimate-bundle/?ref=834
New to 3d printing and blender just wondering when you want to edit something when adding the extra stuff you have made to a pre built model how do U get them to mesh all together
So if you want to do it correctly you need to have the individual parts and then use a boolean in most instances (though there are some other tricks as well). This video may help you a bit but its a bit more advanced: ruclips.net/video/dneiDiTrZjQ/видео.htmlsi=vkGumJAT7F8Snenv
That's a fun idea. I'll see if I can find a good STL for that. The only issue is some people don't like their STLs being used that way so I'll have to see who is happy for me to try that out.
@stevesculptor1 that's a bit of a complicated question. Yes it should be able to but only of the mesh is manifold and that will depend on where the STL is from. In many instances I've seen STLs that would need fixing first.
just a quick question. I have a character thats an stl file but i want to repose her to remodel her. by using the stl as a base reference. how can i do that in blender 4.1.
I just purchased an stl boat file from CGTrader and I am in the process of learning Blender. I need to understand how to create a slight wood texture on the sides and move a few preexisting shapes to a correct position for 3D printing. Please let me know if this is possible.
Hi Marc. It is but you're starting with one of the harder areas as it may be something you have to sculpt in Blender more than hard surface model. And that'd a quite different skill set. Alternatively you could use some sort of displacement but again that isn't a simple/beginner friendly process I'm sorry to say.
WOW. Glad I found your channel!! I learned so much from you. I'm still having problems adding text to my model I downloaded though. I cannot figure it out for the life of me. Is there anyway you can help with my issue? May God bless.
@@ArtisansofVaul Wow thank you so much for replying. It’s just adding text to an stl image. I want raised letters but not too big as I will be printing it.
@@ArtisansofVaul Hello. It's a lighter holder, wanting to place it on the right upper corner near the cylinder. Are you able to use email or whatsapp to communicate?
Hi there. Unfortunately it's not available on mac and I haven't heard of a decent alternative to it. I've been asking around and no one I know with a mac has mentioned anything. Sorry I can't be any more help.
I have a problem with dimension. when I import an stl file the size is broken like every object I imported in are all in the same size, how do I go about this issue?
As in they are too large or too small? The best way to go about this is turning off Blenders size settings. I've got a video on how and going into a bit more detail of the issue you might be having here: ruclips.net/video/hUfPvHPdgR4/видео.html
Hi there. I will be honest and say I am not the best person for CG design like applying materials. But if you only want certain parts selected I'd go into the mesh and select those parts and add the material only to them. Normally because the mesh will be broken up this can be a pain as you'll need to select a lot of faces. This link gives some good ideas though: blender.stackexchange.com/questions/123741/select-all-faces-within-an-area-delimited-by-sharp-edges
You can, you could start with a plain and work from there. You can also draw out shapes by extruding from a vertex, I'd probably use an addon for that like Construction Lines as it makes it much easier/faster. You can see that here: blendermarket.com/products/construction-lines/?ref=834
Thats a toug one. I normally take an exact measurement of one element (for example the width of a bolt/screw hole) and then create a cube or cylinder the correct width or diameter in Blender. Then I scale the model up matching those parts.
is it fine to edit stl files for personal use ? like adding holes for a mask so I can slide something to mount it on my face. I got the stl on thingiverse and I'm not planning to sell the design
So thats a tricky question to answer. Basically yes and no. Some creators will specifically state its allowed and others will state that it isn't so I would go with their wishes regardless. Generally stuff on Thingiverse are usually fine to modify if you aren't going to sell it but I would check the description.
Nice video! Would you say for 3D modeling blender is the best choice? Was thinking about making some designs to potentially resin print but there is so many different software options which seems a bit overwhelming.
I really like it and think its one of the best, if not the best, bit of free software you can get. But it depends on the complexity of what you are designing. If its simple squared objects like buildings something like Sketchup might be better, it's what I learnt on initially and it served me well until I moved onto making more complex objects. What sort of models are you looking to design?
@@ArtisansofVaul I used to play 40k back in 5th edition and loved converting and scratchbuilding for my ork army. Moved from kitbashing to doing plastic card mixed with GW bits. I was always trying to bring it to the next level when it comes to details but options were somewhat limited as a teenager / young adult and I quit the hobby almost a decade ago when a large portion of my models got stolen from a GW store. Anyways ever since I always had ideas of getting back into it and having an army that is largly unique and custom, today's 3D printing tech looks amazing detail wise. One of the last things I did was combine fantasy goblins / gretchins with catachans for an army that would be using guard rules but never got all that far. The idea of custom tanks and flyers was always tempting but probably a lot more effort to scratchbuild from nothing than print (if you took the time modeling the files anyways!).
@@warlordwossman5722 With what you have said I would go for Blender for sure. It gives you access to all the modelling types you might need from hard surface modelling like tanks/vehicles and armour to the sculpting you would need. Youd also be able to combine models/parts together from STL files you fine online, which is really nice as it makes a more digital kitbash.
@@ArtisansofVaul hm, I have been messing around a bit just getting used to the software. The addons you pointed out def helped a lot even if I didn't get the paid one yet. Looks like you got a bunch of helpful videos up and happen to focus on designing things for 40k minis too. I am a total blender noob so it might take a while but if I get anywhere I might consider getting a resin printer at some point - big step for me getting into the hobby again, the sculpting sounds really tough but for infantry I could always fall back to conversions or kitbash with only non-organically shaped parts printed.
@@warlordwossman5722 Id really advise starting with hard surface modelling before moving onto the sculpting. It gets you used to most of the commands and is a bit more friendly (though if you were only interested in sculpting go for that of course). For example making a tank or building is a good start or osme sort of heavy armour. I (foolishly) made some heavy armour as my first project which turned out well but it was a harsh learning curve. A tank would have been easier. Its there but youre looking in the wrong location or not zoomed in enough. Make sure it's selected in the object outliner (the right side menu) then out your mouse in the main window and hit the "." On your numberpad and it will zoom/focus on the object.

That's me using an add on called Machin3 Tools. It's free but you can just press tab and then 1 (vertex mode), 2 (edge mode) or 3 (face mode) if you haven't got it.
Do you mean the file you have downloaded to then import? It should be in your downloads folder or wherever you have set it to save as you're downloading it. If its that you can't find a saved file from Blender then you should be able to search for its name and you can control the location it saves to the same as for saving a file in any computer program.

@rin lewis That will almost always be the case for STL. Depending on the STL you can split them up. You might want to check out my second video on it here: ruclips.net/video/dneiDiTrZjQ/видео.html However, you can colour individual panels by going into edit mode and asigning the material to individual faces.

It's not working for me: if I try to import the file after activating the addon, it doesn't show and if I try to open the file directly, blender starts loading and then fails. Can't find an explanation anywhere
A typical issue is the import has worked but you can't "find" it. When you import it if it shows up in the object outliner (top right) click on it there, then bring your mouse to the main viewport and hit the full stop/decimal on the numberpad. The view will move directly to the object.

I missed the word you click what? dude c'mon now talk less and highlight and emphasize the important points. My two cents
Firstly thanks for taking the time to comment. The issue is there isn't a single button to press. If you want that you're not going to find it unless youre lucky to find a perfect STL (thats an issue with the STLs not Blender). If I did the video more briefly then I would get complaints as it wouldn't cover a lot of the eventualities that occur and I have many more people praising the detail I go into for this very reason. Remember that files from Thingiverse and Pritables are mostly made to print on a 3D printer.
And for an STL exported from Blender to work for 3D print, you need the units in Blender to be set to .001
I think your computer turned into a vacuum cleaner at 2:32
Haha. That was using my old laptop and it wasnt exactly the best specs :D
Blender works with quads.
The first thing to do when wanting to work on an imported STL, is to change the faces from tris to quads.
Unless you're using subd that's largely irrelevant in Blender now. It's perfectly happy working with tris/ngons without hassle.
Hi! Do you have a link where to download the box cutter or hard ops? I´d been looking for it in internet witwhout good results. Thanks!
Of course. Here is the link to the discounted set together, which I'd suggest going for as if you're going to get one you'll end up wanting both: blendermarket.com/products/hard-ops--boxcutter-ultimate-bundle/?ref=834
Most relatable tNice tutorialng ever

New to 3d printing and blender just wondering when you want to edit something when adding the extra stuff you have made to a pre built model how do U get them to mesh all together
So if you want to do it correctly you need to have the individual parts and then use a boolean in most instances (though there are some other tricks as well). This video may help you a bit but its a bit more advanced: ruclips.net/video/dneiDiTrZjQ/видео.htmlsi=vkGumJAT7F8Snenv
How about doing a tut on an STL character, converting it to a mesh for sculpting, rig etc?
That's a fun idea. I'll see if I can find a good STL for that. The only issue is some people don't like their STLs being used that way so I'll have to see who is happy for me to try that out.
Can Quad Remesher be used on an STL?@@ArtisansofVaul
@stevesculptor1 that's a bit of a complicated question. Yes it should be able to but only of the mesh is manifold and that will depend on where the STL is from. In many instances I've seen STLs that would need fixing first.
just a quick question. I have a character thats an stl file but i want to repose her to remodel her. by using the stl as a base reference. how can i do that in blender 4.1.
So you can do rigging but if it's a simple repose I would use this method: ruclips.net/video/WMxNinivOvs/видео.html
@@whipper2469 Sure thing. What sort of object are you trying to add the test too?
@@ArtisansofVaul Wow thank you so much for replying. It’s just adding text to an stl image. I want raised letters but not too big as I will be printing it.

Is 3D builder available on mac/ IOS devices? If not what alternatives would you recommend?
Thank you
@@ArtisansofVaul holy hell thank you I'll check it out
Thanks. How do you deselect the whole piece? In orden to apply different material.
Is it possible to create models without adding or subtracting basic shapes?
You can, you could start with a plain and work from there. You can also draw out shapes by extruding from a vertex, I'd probably use an addon for that like Construction Lines as it makes it much easier/faster. You can see that here: blendermarket.com/products/construction-lines/?ref=834
I'm trying to import precise size models for a power connection but it isn't scaled correctly. any advice?
Thats a toug one. I normally take an exact measurement of one element (for example the width of a bolt/screw hole) and then create a cube or cylinder the correct width or diameter in Blender. Then I scale the model up matching those parts.
@@ArtisansofVaul legend! Sounds so simple now you’ve said it 😂 I appreciate the time thank you very much

Hello P.S.S.GANESH
is it fine to edit stl files for personal use ? like adding holes for a mask so I can slide something to mount it on my face.
Brooo Im using a brush in a STL file but when I save the file the model doesn't have the texture wich I've apllied. Could u help me plz? :')
Hmm... That's very odd. A sculpting brush? I might need more info/pictures or maybe a video of what you've done.
I have a series of tutorials designed for getting people used to most of the functions that make up 90% of hard surface modelling, if you have the basics of moving around the workspace its a good start:

Exporting to 2D might be tricky, I've never really attempted it. What software do you want it to end up in?
this is very epic but i cant find the file that i open even when i look around its no where to be found what should i do?
Do you mean the file you have downloaded to then import? It should be in your downloads folder or wherever you have set it to save as you're downloading it. If its that you can't find a saved file from Blender then you should be able to search for its name and you can control the location it saves to the same as for saving a file in any computer program.
I hope that helps

And we wanted to use a preexisting 3d model with joints and well ... Follow this tutorial, we can modify the face of the 3d model we are going to use, right? You know like ... Like if you were doing a sculpture of a face in blender (sorry if the question about sculpting and editing the face, body, or everything sound a little bit dumb, I'm new in this thing of Blender, i just want to make my own Action figure)
Yeah you should be able to. It may be easier to remove the head and totally start it again by sculpting a new head depending on what you are wanting.

ive got a model here that is an stl file and his uvs are wrong . there is a texture for it but the uvs are something like nonexisttent
