As somebody who has worked in 3D modeling for years, the fact that you waited until the end to go over the lasso tool and seam smoothing got my blood pressure REAL high. Great tutorial tho. Digital kitbashing should really be more widespread in the broader 3D community.
😂 I went over them last as they seem to be something that is easier to get wrong during selection (as you can hit other elements of the mesh) so I wanted to go through the method that is less likely to cause issues first.
That's pretty cool, I've been reposing models in Blender for a while, but not using this method. One thing that I've found reasonably easy is to rig the model with bones, but only rig the parts you want to move (so if you only want to move a shoulder and elbow, you only need to add maybe 3 bones) and use the automatic weights. But on some models that doesn't work well, depends whether the automatic weights can figure out what you're trying to do.
Yeah, the automatic weights work best with quads from what I have tried and Blender will normally have a good go but it wont always be perfect. Thats why I find this method pretty handy.
I hope you will see this after a couple months. I found this video and wanted to give it a try. I have some of OnePageRules 3D print models and they do have the unfortunate issue of limited poses. Even though they offer split parts, the parts are designed to only go together one way. Note I am 100% brand new to Blender and have no experience with it elsewise, so the problem I describe below may be easy for someone used to Blender, but not to me, and I apologize for that. I took one model's "combined" file (the model fully assembled in one STL) and threw it into Blender and noticed that when I go to Sculpt mode, and "Face Sets->Initialize Face Sets->by UV Seam" (notably without making any further changes after importing the STL file), Blender recognizes the separate pieces as if I had input the model piece by piece. Most notably, the arm, as I was trying to do exactly what you did in this video. This was true for multiple files across multiple army sets. In object mode, Blender sees the whole model as a single object, and I can manipulate it as such (move, rotate, etc). When I go to sculpt mode, UV Seam, and select the pose brush, I'm now not able to select "Rotation origin" by Face Sets, then rotate at the shoulders. As Blender sees it as a separate part, the rotation point is seen as the center of the "arm object", or around the elbow, and therefore when rotated, it separates the shoulder from the body. Amusingly, despite the two parts being entirely separate, when I switch back to object mode, Blender still sees it as one single object. I am able to create a seam, just as you did, around the elbow, and that works fine, though limits my poseability. Is there a way to combine the object so, before creating my own UV seams, it sees the object as one single, contiguous piece so that I can then create the seam at the shoulder? I have tried importing the file into Lychee and re-exporting, I have tried importing the individual parts into Microsoft 3D Builder and exporting as a single piece. None make any difference and Blender continues to identify the separate pieces. If you have a separate video on this, a link to that would be ideal. Thank you.
If anyone is like me, and can't find the options and menu items being used... check your version of Blender. Almost everything looked and acted the same, but there was not 'face sets' option when I was in the sculpting tool. Upgraded to most recent version, and it's there. I guess this is a fairly recent feature.
well, bloody hell, that tut was probably the best I've seen; I'am about 6 months of fiddling with Blender (nothing serious) and mainly use it to hack off bits from 1 stl so I can print a different arm and physicaly glue it on for a different pose...Man, you just opened Pandora's stl box!

Thank you.
...and save poses as shape keys for the simplest animation without rigging. Nice and easy.
Oh thats a great tip! I don't really animate so hadn't considered that! Very nice!
Buddy your videos is amazing! This is just what i was looking for! Thank you for creating this great content!
Thanks so much 😁 Its always great to know its going to help out.
OH - MY - GOOOOOOD!!!
This is astonishing!! My brain just got blown up!! THANK YOU!
😁😁 Cheers. Glad it's going to get some use 😁
@@ArtisansofVaul for sure! This will solve tons of problems with rigging!
I've been following you for a while and love your videos and tips!
@famisreiter4141 Thanks man. Lovely of you to say 😁👌🏼
awesome!
Nice to see you getting into minis, it's my hobby besides making video games as a job. Now I get tips for my work and my hobby
Haha. Always been into the mini side (that's what I use Blender for) but this seemed good as something more miniature/3D printing specific.
Perfect timing!
Just got some Tyranid Models, which I thought could use some variety in their poses! :D
Great use for it! 👌🏼
Amazing stuff. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
My pleasure 😁😁😁
If anyone is like me, and can't find the options and menu items being used... check your version of Blender. Almost everything looked and acted the same, but there was not 'face sets' option when I was in the sculpting tool. Upgraded to most recent version, and it's there. I guess this is a fairly recent feature.
Good tip 👌🏼 Thanks so much!
Omg is this NEW ???? saved and going to test this tonight wow !!
Not new but I think its really lacking videos on it and showing its use
This is amazing I will be able to repose a lot of STLs
Thanks 😁👍🏻 Great it will help
I have been looking for a quick way to change the poses of real statues that have been scanned for VFX work. I'll be trying this out for that. Cheers.
😁 Should work great for that
Man, this is a game changer for me! Thank you so much!
😁👍🏻
This is such a helpful tutorial! Gonna have to try this out!
Let us know how it goes! 😁👍🏻

Thanks so much!
Absolute gamechanger. Liked, subscribed, favorited.
Thanks so much. And thanks for taking the time to comment 🙂
This is a great tutorial. Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Thanks so much Yolo! 😁👍
An excellent description of a complex process.
Cheers Darren 👍🏻😁
