    I was literally just looking for a good review on the 2015 GLI like an hour ago! thanks!

    This is a great highway car! It is quite quick the freeway. It beats cars that are much faster and more powerful on paper on a regular basis;)

    APR ECU and TCU remap will cure any woes you may have with the GLI. I love my 2017 GLI. 270hp with the APR Stage 1 tune. 38 MPG avg.

    Your reviews are always very well executed, I love your channel. I live in Gilbert/Mesa so I recognize all of these roads you're on. Is this past canyon lake in Apache Junction?

    Two questions:
    (1) You cited the synergy with the tires (unnamed) and the suspension: at what pressure did you have the tires (the owners manual suggests 38 psi)?
    (2) Curious why the vehicle did not earn a "would buy" accolade: its 4.5-star rating was equal to the Civic SI which, for example, did make the "would buy" list?
    I selected a 2015 GLI (manual) over the Civic SI and Mazda 3s (trim with the more powerful engine) primarily for its low-tech, classic look. Speaking for myself, I feel I'm driving a car, not piloting a starship.
    Thanks for the reviews.

      +Poor Yorek As to which tires were on the car or what the pressure was, it's hard to know as it is long gone from our fleet. We would suggest the pressures were whatever was recommended by the MFR as it is prepared and sent to us from them. The "Id Buy It List" is subjective, not based on metrics. It's about what presses the personal buttons of the host and nothing more. We would guess he would likely prefer a MK7 GTI over the MK6 GLI if he were standing in the showroom.

      The numbers are unimportant. Ever since 2014, the GLI 6MT has been the only logical choice for perfectionists in the front wheel drive sedan market. The Mk6 Jetta was originally going to have an AWD trim level, but it was taken away due to its irrelevance (I'm assuming). There is a Mk6.5 GLI DSG owner who AWD swapped his '15 GLI, using Official Volkswagen Audi drivetrain parts from a Mk7 Golf R, and then very minimal alterations, and zero custom fabrication necessary. If you have a little less than then thousand to spend, you can take a Mk6.5 GLI from bone stock to essentially a Golf R Sedan, even including nice touches like the Unitronic Mk7 Golf R turbo back exhaust kit, the 19 inch Pretoria wheels, smoked out lights or color matched lights in all four corners, front lip splitter/side skirts/rear diffuser, non obnoxious deck lid spoiler, and then custom "Jetta R" rear badge, with "R" badges wherever else the Golf R has them too, along with the Golf R steering wheel badge being swapped from the GLI steering wheel badge. Almost forgot, the Unitronic Stage 2 ECU tune for EA888.3 Non MQB.
      I'm missing a few other things, but the point is that in 2023, you can buy a 2015 GLI 6MT (I don't care if you don't want to drive manual every day, either get it or just admit you're not a real man and move on) with less than 75k miles, and in relatively good condition for $15k.
      So you can realistically have a fully built "Jetta R" for $25k.

    Good Review Sam...its missing a couple of things...the 6spd Manual and a 16V badge up front (Mk II owners will know what im talking about).
    Can you share the road that you did your test on? It looks like either Salt River Canyon or Tortilla Flats?

      +xTouragx Thank you! This was on Apache Trail between Tortilla Flats and where the pavement ends.

    So much to say here. But I'll keep that to myself. Great review! Thanks for your input and review of this car. I'm looking at a 2016 to replace my TDi which goes back (maybe...if they ever settle this thing) in November. I think the GLi with the DSG will be perfect for my needs, except for the mileage. :-)

    I drove my 17 GLI 6M, 800 miles the other week on the Interstate and averaged nearly 37MPG cruising at 75MPH. I'm sure it would be slightly higher at slightly lower speeds and slightly lower at slightly higher speeds.

      I think that’s really good. Especially for a turbocharged engine and a car as big as the Jetta. I used to have a 2012 Kia Forte Koup, just a regular 4 cylinder and would only get about 32-35 and it’s a really small car in comparison

      Yes, I recently drove my 2014 gli from Nashville to New Orleans, about 520 miles and averaged 36 mpg. I had the air conditioning on the entire way and drove conservatively. Not bad at all for a 210 horsepower car. I can drive about 8 hours on the highway before needing to refuel. I've gotten even as high as 39mpg on some routes where I drove at just 55mph.

    Turn signals on the rear are red. They are LED.
    @Tom Smith, the GLI is the best alternative to the torque of the TDI.

    Hello Sam. Really enjoyed the review. I had a Jetta as a rental a couple of years ago (don't remember the model). I have been debating replacing my Nissan Frontier with either a Subaru Impreza or Jetta Diesel. I really love the Jetta. One question is what has your experience been with the overall reliability of any Volkswagen you currently have (or had)?

    • @TestDrivenTV
      @TestDrivenTV  9 лет назад

      +Derek Carmichael Our VW's tend to be higher maintenance than Japanese brands, most often smaller "German car" things.

    I wonder how the GLI compares to GTI. I guess GTI should be a better car, since GTI is recently redesigned, but don't know by how much.

    Did you just say it's based on a golf 6 platform? This car has nothing in common with the golf. It's designed for the American market and is much lower quality than the golf.

    • @TestDrivenTV
      @TestDrivenTV  8 лет назад +2

      +DJPelio Correct the U.S. Jetta is somewhat unique, but it's based on Golf VI as a starting point, meaning front suspension, cradle, mounts and front firewall structures are common. And on the GLI it also gets the more premium rear suspension. It is not yet based on MQB or Golf VII.
