Agnes Baltsa (ok, aided by Carreras, Ricciarelli, etc) converted me to Opera on a beautiful September evening in Athens, 1984. A bunch of us from The British School [of Archaeology] decided to go to see Carmen performed in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus (Herodion) at the foot of the Acropolis. All the stars were aligned, I was 20, free, and single, I fell in love.
we were lucky to have her in Vienna quite a lot
Baltsa was a powerhouse and had balls huge like melons - to sing in chest during many lower parts is nuts.

What´s so strange, She told her voice was actually a dramatic soprano but she could go to he mezzo path!
