Such a shame that this game won't have a sequel, prequel or just another installment. But having a "Dream Team" like Sakaguchi, Horii and Toriyama, working in a single game, is a rarity.

Unrelated to Chrono Trigger there is another game in the works with a "Dream Team" helping with production on an upcoming game.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes (Spiritual successor to Suikoden)
Yoshitaka Murayama (Suikoden I and II) - Scenario Writer/Director
Junko Kawano (Suikoden I and IV) - Lead Artist
Osamu Komuta (Suikoden Tactics and Suikoden Tierkreis) - Director
Junichi Murakami (Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, OZ) - Producer/Art Director
Motoi Sakuraba (Tales series) - Composer
Michiko Naruke (Wild Arms series) - Composer
It's not Chrono Trigger but it is something cool to look forward too.

It's one of the greatest games ever made. The soundtrack fits so well the moments. Gameplay isn't hard and characters are great. Plot is epic. Problem is the game is so well made that maybe Square is afraid to touch it. Even making a remake or a sequel it's hard because the game itself is a masterpiece.

Thank you very much for this video as well as the others you’ve made. As funny as it sounds you have helped give me closure with many of these games that I grew up with. I grew up with RPG’s and they’ve been a major part of most of my life. I’ve played all the legendary (Final Fantasy games VI being my favorite) as well as the Seiken Densetsu games, Crono games, Lufia, Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden, and Breath of Fire just to name a few. As a kid I’ve always wondered what the hell happened to all my childhood games that mean so much to me. I truly appreciate all the work and energy you have placed on these videos and I just wanted you to know that it has not gone unnoticed. Thank you once again for that, and I’m glad I found your channel as it’s always wonderful to meet a fellow RPG lover...

They made a gacha game that took heavy inspiration by other games they worked on, especially Chrono series if that counts. Same writer, and also same music composer. But different company, WTS, not Square Enix. The game is called Another Eden, and isn't from the same universe, but there is similar looking characters though such as Lucca Ashtear (named Ashtear), Frog (named Cyrus), and Tifa (named Amy), and is about time travel too, and there's also End of Time. Just like JRPG, there's world exploration in 2.5D, and because they wanted it to be like JRPG as much as possible they keep adding new strong "free" 5 star in the game like there's 50 of them now and no events either as in all collabs stayed in the game even years later, and even gacha characters can be obtained for free though those are abit more grindy, and no macro-transaction aside from crystal related. And the game been out since 2017, and is the very last game that writer worked out, which make sense cause live-service. Yet, alot of Chrono fans doesn't know so it's super underrated, like they even done an actual collab with Chrono Cross too. And yes, the game is also on PC, though just like Chrono Trigger, it's just a port and not as good as the original, aka Mobile in this case.
Sure it may not be a direct sequel, they can't even if they wanted to cause different company means copyright issue, and it being a live service means there's no important choices either. But I thought it was still cool that there's a game with similarities to them by the same writer and music composer that constantly gets updated even now, lol XD

I would say cross is a direct sequel I mean kid is the baby Lucca adopted at the end of trigger so that's a continuation. Glenn is in the game. Aylas daughter is in the game. Lavos was the last boss and so much more. Sure it's not Chrono trigger 2 but that's because Chrono had died in the first one and only his clone existed.

To me, the lineup of people involved in this game, is basically the Dream Team of RPGs. Get those guys in a room together and you have a masterpiece. Unfortunately a couple of them have drifted away from Square/Enix. Also, not sure if you guys have mentioned, a game about TIME TRAVEL has some major problems. The story doesn’t make sense as a sequel :P I think Chrono Cross’s wacky story explains that pretty well.

@@ll1844 yes there are reasons. But mostly it is nostalgia or other reasons. For example many people say FF7 is the best jrpg or the best FF ever. I played it some years ago and although i liked it i found it kinda dull. Not even nearly the best ff or jrpg for me. And there we come to the reasons why people think otherwise:
      First is nostalgia.
Second is it was the very first 3D final fantasy game and was pretty good (for it's time).
And third, it was the very first FF game in Europe ever.
The reasons don't apply to me though, i don't have nostalgia for this game or anything like that. Story was okay for me but the storytelling was kinda mediocre. More than the half of the characters were flat. The spin off games have a better story and representation.

I still believe that cross is indeed a sequel, and the DS version of triggers connects at some.point with cross. I have completed both games on each ending. El Nido is just another piece of the map missing on trigger. Just my personal opinion based on my gameplays

    • @danieldavis2055
      @danieldavis2055 2 года назад

They actually explain why El Nido is missing on the CT map during Cross.
      Here's the thing-
*Trigger and Cross take place in the same world
      * Trigger's time travel events directly caused the events of Cross.
      * A large number of Trigger's characters play very specific, pivotal roles in Cross (don't want to spoil the plot)
I think that, given some very upsetting revelations about what happened to the Trigger cast after the closing events of that game, certain fans of Trigger want to *pretend* that the game isn't a sequel.
      But it is.
Just because a story has gone in a direction some don't like doesn't mean the story does not exist.

A remaster of Cross would make Square significant money, as is the only thing I could see them do with this series now unless they really put the right energy forward and make a true Trigger sequel. For me it would need to be done in the same art style to feel like it should. The music is my favorite of any game ever. That said, it has always blown my mind that with such a huge following and amazing fandom that there hasn't been anything since Cross other than fan creations.

  • @casekocsk
    @casekocsk 5 лет назад +2

Precisely because Chrono Trigger is so big that making a direct sequel is even harder. Without original creators, you will lose the original feeling. Without original company, you can't secure the license. And if you FAIL, you lose BIG. Making indirect sequel or spin-off is a much safer bet.
In the end, it's better to have no sequel at all so the series (I mean the original game) can retain its legendary status in real world and in our memories...

    • @aliastheabnormal
      @aliastheabnormal 5 лет назад

That's bullshit Square is just doing it to spite the original creators. Lots of games continue without the original creative teams. That's just Square politely saying that something happened behind the scenes and they want revenge on Sakaguchi.

Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross have, in my opinion, the best musical scores of not only that era, but of this generation as well. Game developers, to me, seem to only care about how games look nowadays, not how they feel. Yes, game worlds can immerse a player and wow them, but without a good musical score to go with it, it feels empty, emotionless.
Also, to me, Chrono Cross has the absolute best opening cutscene and music. The flute combined with the violin gets me so excited.
If/when Crono is introduced in Smash Bros., maybe Square Enix will wake up and give us the sequels to Chrono Trigger and Valkyrie Profile that we want, need and deserve

Erm.... Xenogears was originally pitched as a possible Final Fantasy VII, but was dismissed as being "too dark" for a FF plotline (which is odd given how dark FFVII turned out being).
While it is true that for a VERY short time, Xenogears was planned to be "Chrono 2", that was a very short thing (just a month or two), and didn't even last through the process of assembling the development team. Takahashi made it clear very early on that he wanted to create his own world for the project.

Very poetical. That is a nice way to make an story have a very special place in the hearts of their fans. If they have something with value and relevant through a sequel, that's great. But seeing the result of this timeless masterpiece by releasing a sort of spinoff... Sequel, spinoff, whatever. I just hope that we get something more of this universe and its point of view, no matter what it is.

Which makes me think that despite not being able to put together the amazing dream team that worked on Trigger/Cross, it is still possible for fans to carry on the torch---if only both Enix and Nintendo had that bad habit to shoot down any project instead of taking the Sonic Mania's approach: HIRE the fans.
With that said, even if they don't make a sequel or remaster I am happy with it, both Trigger and Cross will be eternal mile stones c: especially Cross has such tight battle system, AMAZING soundtrack and really pretty graphics ^^

First of all excellent vid. I think what rly happened apart form what you said in the video is that Chrono trigger was too good for itself and very well wrapped up storywise games like these are too good for themselves i mean if they wanted a direct sequel they would really have to outdo their previous selves and that alone would be very hard when you create smth this special put in the mix new projects maybe some personal conflict the creators had and its not hard for a gem of a series like chrono to be forgotten. Indeed its a game that has everything and despite its age showing compared to todays rpgs (basically for me its timeless but) i would say to whoever is reading this that its a huge loss for them as an rpg player if they havent got their hands on it yet. Truly a loss for the rpg pantheon the sequel to chrono trigger as we d expect it will never come to be but at least we experienced trigger and cross both masterpieces and with lots of replay value. One phrase GET THEM!

Sometimes it's best to have no other sequals.. it doesn't capture the magic sometimes. Look what they with chrono cross.... level cap in each chapter. Let the player decide if they want to grind and level up. Taking away that part was just horrible. A RPG game is also about gaining power by leveling up. If we want challenge we won't level up much at least it's our choice. We had to play their way. Well it's what it is. The only good thing is Chrono Trigger the SNES version.. Well each his own

Chrono Cross is what we will ever get, because it's all there can be. The same enemy endlessly using time travel to present itself as the threat. And even if they create a new threat, it would just use time travel to cross paths with alternate timeline Lavos' and it will just be the same thing over and over, and over, and over, and....get it? Chrono Cross was Chrono Trigger. Same bosses from alternate timelines, and same final boss.

Chrono Cross is an awesome game in it's own right, definitely worth a playthrough and the game has a rather unique plot twist midway through that I won't spoil for you. CC has good optional bosses and is a significant graphical upgrade and uses CGI instead of the more cartoonish look of Trigger's cut scenes.
The battle system is timing based for successful attacks which may or may not be your cup of tea but overall I'd say definitely play it if you like CT as long as you don't expect a tied in sequel you'll enjoy it.

To me, the obvious path to rebooting this series starts with a remake of the original. Let a new team get their feet wet with remaking it, so they can become familiar with what it's all about. Then they can either remake Chrono Cross, or start making new games in the series.

Well, I will miss these What the Hell happened videos. Are you gonna make them a playlist? I agree with you. Chrono Cross was a great game, but originally disappointing for me due to the reasons you stated. Both games had an amazing OST, and graphics for their respective times. Too bad Square/Enix is basically leaving it dead. The game can basically write itself. Magus as the main protagonist searching for Schala.

I wish Square would port Chrono Cross. I played that game first and have fonder memories of it than the original Trigger.

I mean, technically, Chrono Cross ends with you destroying the multiverse and rebooting it to a universe that looks like ours, so there's that.

Chrono Cross BEST RPG in PS 1!!! The Graphics of this game is almost PS 2 level!!! The Gameplay and Battle System is also very interesting and fresh!
The Story even though kinda confusing, I still think it has it own charm.

Rommel James Cabatay I think what makes it so confusing to most is that they miss the fact that the words in cross are a mish-mash of all the what if scenarios caused by the events of Chrono Trigger. Had that been made more clear I think people would not find it so confusing

I think Square is just afraid of ruining the legacy of a masterpiece, its not like Chrono went anywhere it's always getting ported and rereleased on new systems and consoles. The game is pretty self contained I mean sure fans want more but what else is there for them to do exactly?
    SPOILER:
Also, one big issue is Chrono Cross kinda fucked up Chrono and co, like the main heroes essentially died once their kingdom got taken over, the girl inventor got assassinated by the panther dude and even Robo got disassembled into parts so where do they go from there? Finally, Chrono Cross essentially ends the entire world as well cuz the chick and the MC end up to the present day still looking for each other.
There's just no logical progression for the world anymore, the best Square can do is maybe remake Chrono Trigger the same way they are doing to FF7. With the success of FF7 remake there is def a chance of that happening.

What a lame excuse they found not to make a new sequel, as if there weren't enough competent people out there that could make a great sequel, or they are telling me that every great sequel to every great game always gets made by the same people behind the original
