I regard her as one of the great talents of the past 50 years but to me she is sadly under appreciated. A piano prodigy with a voice that is raw and crystal pure and a musical scalpel that opens your heart. Brilliant by every standard.
What is especially interesting in this video: This is Tori at age 28, just before she reached superstardom. But listen to this carefully. Winter is one of her greatest songs, mabye THE greatest. Every nuance is here. Her touch, every roll of the tongue, every click of her lips. It was complete art, right there, and it never changed. Amazing.
This video here made a teenage metalhead melt into pieces and now in my thirties I still love metal but Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Bjork, Imogen Heap, etc, are at the top of my list. My life is been greatly blessed by these titans.
such a beautiful thing to say: someone who would write such a beautiful message must have a beautiful heart on some level, as tori says here, 'never change!'
Every time I hear this song I think of when I put my dads big ass jacket on when I was little, and felt protected bc it was so big and cozy. Now he's 70, healthy, but he relies on me. He just doesn't know that I'll always rely on him more...❤
Omg this brought me to tears. I miss my Dad so much. He died when I was 31 and I really needed him the last 19 years. My son turns 18 in December and is named after my Dad.
You can purchase the whole show to watch on prime. It's amazing because you get to see her when she is just starting to have success, then the same songs the next year. She is so talented it almost hurts to watch at times. I've been lucky enough to see her live 5 times throughout the last 20 years. The last show was at Red rocks in Denver, her voice couldn't quite hit the same range, and whenever they showed a close up of her hands, they looked subtly arthritic. You can tell that her music has taken a toll on her body. And yet she was up there playing, bringing thousands joy. I was humbled by the sacrifice she has made but grateful for the peace her music has brought me whenever I listen. She is and was and always will be an amazing talent.
I feel an amorphous soul-crushing yearning that I can't quite explain when I hear this song (especially this live version). It's almost too beautiful that I can't bear it
I rank this as Tori's finest of all performances. So full of verve and vibrance. She puts her heart and soul into this masterpiece. How could one not adore Tori?
Yes. This is great live music. Such a travesty that people today think that live music is all about having 20 half naked dancers on stage, with a seizure inducing light show, while some hack lip synchs to their inane drivel. You can't beat an actual musician giving an emotive performance like this
I have not seen a better LIVE performance than this. It's flawless. So emotive, so genuine. Everytime I watch this, I am transfixed from start to finish. The last 40 seconds give me goosebumps.
No matter how many times I've watched this, I always start to cry at the end. So many emotions there, her voice, her face and the way she plays the piano, it's unbelievable beautiful but kinda sad at the same time
I've loved Tori since I heard her at age 16, and 16 years later she still captivates me. I saw her live in Phoenix, AZ about 16 years ago. She looked like a wild, redheaded mermaid in her bright green dress, and she captivated me. So much feeling in her music and it's so visible when she sings live. I didn't realize the depth of meaning in this song until I watched this video. Makes me cry in sadness, but for beautiful reasons.
This song is so beautiful it is almost hard to believe it is live and not digitally tuned from a studio....the human voice and piano - incredible. It is really hard to describe how beautiful it is. Can you imagine a world without music? Or being deaf and not having this privilege? No words.
I agree. I'm a first time listener and this is the only Tori Amos song I ever heard. Coincidentally, 2/19/19, is the anniversary of my dad and soul mate's departures. R.I.P.
Without question or ever remotely comparable, Tori is beyond exceptional. If she doesn't stop you from what you're doing to pay attention to her words, her love and incredible passion she has for her music, you need to check your pulse. Absolutely amazing woman; amazing musician. Thank you Tori. Been listening to you for decades.
In the 90's when I played this song it always made me cry because I loved my father so much. After he died, whenever I hear this, I'm reduced to tears again. Can't explain it. What a masterpiece. Love you, Daddy!
5 minutes 47 seconds of pure musical magic. If this doesn't touch your heart and soul then you better check to make sure you're still breathing. A wonderfully bittersweet song, from a magnificent artist. Cheers Tori!
When her first CD "Little Earthquakes" came out I remember feeling really sad because she was obviously enormously talented and that her career would probably not last. I thought that anyone who could pour as much emotion as she does into her music was headed for some kind of melt-down. We have seen it way too many times. I am so thankful I was wrong.
It's actually quite the opposite more often than not. It's the ones that keep their emotions inside that have meltdowns. Writing and performing music like this would be incredibly cathartic and healthy. In my opinion anyway. There are of course exceptions but having an outlet for your emotions is half the battle
Just over and above any other musician i have ever heard. I was lucky to see her live in 1996. I remember walking out of the theatre and looking at people crying. The tears ran down my face when she sang this.
"Things are gonna change so fast" for Tori Amos. In two years (since this concert) she would become a superstar. Beautiful heart-wrenching song. 162 people have no souls.
"Winter" is a beautiful ode to a father-daughter relationship. The most beautiful metaphors pass by, such as the ice getting thin and white horses in the snow. In short: mortality. My father passed away 2 weeks ago and I have played this song a lot lately. Tori is smashingly good in this rendition of "Winter". Emotional and perfect in vocals and piano.
It's a mystery to me how anyone can dislike this performance and this beautiful song. Either deaf or jealous, I suspect. Tori has an incredible talent and is very permeable.
I started listening to Tori in 93 and dug this song. Now that I have older daughters of my own, it takes on an entirely new emotional meaning. Pulls hard at the heart strings.
tori i never get tired of hearing this fantastic tribute to your father i can see in your face its painful for you to sing but i am proud of you so imagine who your father felt when he heard you sing this fantastic song tori this performance is 100% class
I have an odd time watching this and other Tori Amos videos. It feels like I've intruded on something deeply personal that wasn't for me. I'm captivated deeply by her and an intimacy that I've created in my own head. She is a stunning talent and I'm always humbled by her when I listen.
In my oponion one of the most naturally and emotional live performances ever by just plain piano playing and singing Pure music from an outstanding Artist Greetings from Germany
I love Tori, I used to listen to her as a teen- her music helped me through some pretty rough years. Now, as an adult her music still moves my soul, brings me to tears. She is by far one of the most talented and amazing woman I've ever had the pleasure to experience. Absolutely amazing talent
Same. She helped me immensely as a teen. Now a grown adult woman, listening to it is as beautiful as it was back then. Used to listen to it with my mom. Now passed on, it is sad listening alone.
I could stare at her forever. She's incredibly mesmerizing and captivating. The breaths, the mouth noises, her lips and teeth in the pauses. She is a true artist.
When i heard my father had died suddenly during the night. I had to drive forty miles to the family home. This is what i was listening to.. i owe this woman a massive debt.
i´ve listended to this song in age of 10, my mother listen to it then. i havent listen to it since a century or more. a few years ago i heard again and i have to cry every time. Awesome song. little earthquakes is the album that reminds me most of my childhood. cause things are gonna change so fast... Greetings from germany
This is quite possibly the most "perfect" liver performance I've ever seen... What a treat for that audience. Little did they know the brilliance they were witnessing. This song always brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for this song, Tori.
Jane then go listen to Kate Bush, Hounds of Love good to start with....I think tjese days Lana Del Rey is the extension of those two vocalist, writer, musicians. All amazing powerful(strong intelligent creative) and beautiful women, that totally could be divas, but they don't play that shit
I listen to cloud on my tongue every morning at 5am in the car on my way to work. There's something magical about her music I just can't get tired of it.
Besides being extremely easy on the eyes ,what an amazing performer to say nothing of how great her singing and songwriting skills are, a bravura live performance of a beautiful song ,obviously personal and heartfelt!
It must b e remembered that not all songs or inspiration for them is completely literal, I believe she says this is a song, for my father , and not about my father. So one can not really say , oh that's what her dad said to her or oh that's how she felt about him, most songs are crafted from bits and pieces of feelings maybe some even borrowed from something one heard someone say, in any case there is no real proof in the lyrics that this is a father ,daughter song, just that it is for him, which could mean ,written with him in mind , or just dedicated to him at the moment she sang it at Montrose, though of course we would like to believe it is a personal father ,daughter statement, but as Bob Dylan often said when interviewed about a song said, well you can think what you will about it, but that's not what it means!, but it is what it means to you that is important and gives it it's real appeal! Once you write a song and send it in to the world it is what it means to those hearing it!
So let me get this straight, your so un appealing yourself ,that you use a photo of a actor with a hairlip to represent your image, yea I can see that. Sucks to be you, obviously!

I regard her as one of the great talents of the past 50 years but to me she is sadly under appreciated. A piano prodigy with a voice that is raw and crystal pure and a musical scalpel that opens your heart. Brilliant by every standard.
"A musical scalpel that opens your heart" is beautiful writing, man.
Said so well, thank you!
I agree, here I am in 2023.
A exceptional description … can’t top it,,,! She literally sings through all my cells …
One day I will be able to listen to this performance without ending up in tears.
Today was not this day. It may never come
Never
Ugly crying 😭😭😭😭
No, it won't. And that's OK. Love to you.
I still can’t
And this comment.😢
This album is pure gold. What a talented musician. All unplugged and perfect.
The greatest song ever written for a father.
Except maybe Conway Twitty's That's my Job
Good one for sure by Tori but by far the best is "Leader of the Band" by Dan Fogelberg for his father...!!!
Father Son by Peter Gabriel is right up there.

Someone who writes and performs this song deserves to be loved forever on some level.
That's a lovely thought

I dont know how many times I have watched this, Tori is a genius. She is Einstein in the making. .
I love and admire the fact that she doesn't need a band or any more instruments to make this song sound so perfect
It's the way its done. What makes you a real musician, not a music performer. Thrilling.
She is absolutely captivating but listed to Anastasia with an orchestra. And I bet you get goosebumps.
