There's a story about this song for me. It was released in 1988. It was THE country song that captured my interest in getting to know the genre better. Until then, I never programmed my radio dial to anything other than classic rock. This song resonated with me in a way that I can't explain. Sadly, it disappeared from the popular mix and years would pass never hearing it replayed on the country station that I had finally programmed as the number 1 slot on my radio dial. Over the years I searched for it on RUclips under "That's That" but it never came up, as I didn't know the artist's name. This morning I tried again. Still nothing. But then, I added the word "country" and low and behold ... HERE IT IS!! 😄🤗🥰
When I first heard this song on the radio in late September 1988, it reminded me of the late 1970's Saturday morning NBC show theme "That's Cat." That's that, that's that, that's that. This song peaked at #9 on the Billboard country singles chart in November 1988, but should have been a #1.
Michael was so cool. He gave the same show for an audience of 20 that he gave for an audience of 20,000. He'd play at Browns Diner in Nashville --early 2000s--just because he loved it and we loved him. And it was a total pro 100%, this guy is awesome, show for 10 people. That is one special human being. God rest his soul.
This song came out in the summer/fall of 88. My sweetheart and I had broken up and this song spoke to the pain in my heart. Here we are almost 34 Yrs later and I never forget what his loss meant to me. I treasure everyday with him. So grateful for our lives together 💜 RIP Michael McDonald. Love your music.
This is such a beautiful song... hard to describe with words. I feel so many emotions when I listen to it. I just heard it once more than 20 years ago and I never forgot it. Thank you so much for the emotional experience by posting this song!
When this came out I was breaking up someone that was over 30 years ago and I can still feel what I felt that day. Like the song say's nothing I can do - great song for then and for now and time does heal all pain...
A lifetime favorite, ever since seeing MJ perform it on a live TV show (Austin City Limits?) in 1990 or so. He introduced it "This next song is the answer to the musical question, 'What's what?' "
When I went to look for this version on Spotify a couple of years ago, I couldn't find it. I grew up listening to this kind of music as a kid. Thanks for posting this!
I was driving through Texas or Oklahoma from New Mexico one time in my twenties and heard this one time on the radio and it haunted me because I loved it... I was going through a" that's that" thing for about the 30th time. I ended up in Georgia. Saw Fort Benning where my husband had trained to be an Airborne Ranger. I wish his life had been better, and mine too. :>
A "country" tune in 3/4... I heard this on the radio 25 years ago, was impressed by its emotional honesty then... ...and my reaction to it now is even more profound. This is Human Genius. Addendum: To the commentors below who remarked on the rhythmic complexity of this marvelous tune, let me suggest that you Google the musical terms "complex triple meter" and "hemiola;" some composers study for years before they can use those devices as effectively as is being done here.
Love this song. This brings me back to a time of deep regret. All she wanted was me and I turned my back on her. After 25 years This song brings it all flooding back.. What a fool I was. If I could somehow go back and confront myself I would smack the shit out of myself . I was such an ass back then, I am so sorry Cheryl
Yes, thx for posting. I got this cassette back when he was on a nationally syndicated country music call-in talk show. So, I called in. As usual my mouth couldn't keep up with my mind, and I sounded awful, and I think my question was worse. But, they mailed me a cassete of the album "That's That", and I loved it. I bought "Wings" after that. I also love his duet with Juice Newton "It Must be You". Any chance of postin that too? :)
I heard this song referred to as," the try to tap your foot to it song". I can't do it, can anyone else-try it. (Its due to the fact that all of the instruments were recorded at different speeds.)Can't do it, can you? lol patybear
Remembering Jessica. 3/20/91 -1/10/22. I miss you so much. 💘

Enjoy listen to this classic hit song. Use listen on radio stations back then. Thank You
This Night Won't Last Forever should have been an awesome hit as well! Unfortunately Michael Johnson was so underrated and he deserved better!!
Such a great voice. Got the intro in ‘78. What a collection of songs. Met him at one of his free gigs in the late 90s. Unassuming and so talented.
I looked up the word "bittersweet" and it was defined by this amazing song.
I've often wanted to hear this "lost": song over the years, thanks for giving it back to me. Sad, sweet, and too familiar. Much appreciated,
My favorite Michael Johnson song ...says it all "That's That"
Has anybody noticed the drum line on this? It adds to the emotions of the song. Great!
Great musicians. Tricky beat. Smooth voice. Beautifully sad song.
May you rest in peace Michael. So loved your music, and your Twin Cities concerts. What a gift you were to so many people.
When this came out I was breaking up someone that was over 30 years ago and I can still feel what I felt that day. Like the song say's nothing I can do - great song for then and for now and time does heal all pain...
I had the same experience, Doug. This song didn't give me any answers, but it gave me solace (and oddly enough) hope for the future.
i love that song....beautiful country music from magic season of the 80s.Michael Johnson one of the best pop, country artist ever.
I like the way he phrased the last "Thats That".Acceptance rather than regret
Terrific song and the lyrics say it the best; when it's over it's over and you have to move on; that's that.
I love this song!!
So much truth in one song

"Get your feet wet..." another love who is gone and the common things that remind us of them every damn day...
This song is so sad! I remember this song from when I was a kid. It just sounds so hopeless!
Another great song by this great artist. He has such a soothing voice. He could sing you dying on your death bed and you wouldn't even care!!!
Thanx for putting this on here.

+patricia sedota It's a simple 6/8 rhythm--just tap your foot on 1 and 4 (if you must.)
Can't really dance to it, either. But good song.
the best for you is yet to become...except, I'm sorry to say will be music. You will have to continue to look over your shoulder
