Sorry to hear what you've been going through..I really do hope you hang in there and find yourself in a better place. It's hard as hell but very very possible!
This video somehow always brings me to tears. In my projection she's the child within him that is unwilling to accept the cage and therefore lashes out at everyone, including herself. She learns to forgive and love herself. Unblinded by rage she focuses her gaze outward and realises only the child can walk out easily (and be happy) where she must leave the the part of herself that soothed her (addiction/abusive relation/all that good stuff). We all have our different interpretations and projections of the true meaning of the story and that's just a testament to how powerful this song and video is. And Shia...awesome performance. I heard he had been struggling with his own demons, and the energy is felt in this video. Good for him he apparently found his true love and is off the sauce. Hope the dude finds forgiveness.
Beautifully said. It moves me and brings tears to my eyes, too. It might mean different things at different times I watch it. I come back to it, every so often, and notice some new interpretation every time. I enjoy hearing other people's connections to the lyrics, music, and performance.
@@krheiden288 I love how expressive you are on how you saw this video I love hearing ppls own interruption. I see it like, two partners, having slight internal wars, then they discover the other person, they learn how to accept, this, while dancing together, until they find ways, the other, isn't ready to leave the cage that confines them, the one isn't able to process or come fully to some terms. . . But not after carrying her, and her interchild and help tame it a little When she looks back she sees him struggling, and she runs back to him, allowing him to not fight his own internal wars, alone.
People don't know art anymore. Always want to find something in anything to be mad about. If you saw this as anything but art, such as an "inappropriate relationship" between these actors like I've been reading, then shame on you. Grow up
I watched it and I can't see anything inappropriate about it. The closest relationship I could see in it was between a brother and a sister, because this is exactly how my siblings act with me, play fighting and doing silly things to annoy each other, especially when she goes out of the cage and he doesn't. It's actually a beautiful piece.
What exactly did he do wrong that can't be remedied or overcome? I glanced over some video of actors/celebs who had overstayed their welcome. But we're all human. We all make mistakes. I don't it's fair to subject famous people to ridiculously higher standards. Today's culture is so vicious, and eager to judge someone into oblivion.
Isabella xo music sucks when it has no meaning. Most singers talk about money and drugs. while few talk about love, life, government, radio, hate, and joy that is what music should be about
Isabella you are right on, this is so true. This is why Sia is so amazing, this video has a complex meaning that can be interpreted in multiple ways, but is in no way sexual. haters are just to busy hating to take time to analyze and think about the video to try understand how beautiful her videos are. Their is such a deep message here illustrated and executed by the amazingly skilled actors. their is so much to say but just watch the video a stay open minded.
the part where maddie tries to get shia out of the cage but he can't get out reminds me of those moments when you are trying to get someone out of something like depression or anorexia or a disorder like that, and just like maddie ran out, it looks so easy to just leave it, but for some people it's difficult to get out of the cage, like something pulls you back, you are afraid of what people will say, or you are just to attached to it. then people trying to desperately pull you out but you can't no matter how you try and im crying help
laci Tippett I feel the same. In my case, sadness started to be daily...and my cage. the exhausting part is pretend the whole day 4 the others, so they don't dive stupid monologues of how living, when they either know how. best wishes
+Ximena Perez Ikr? I always haft to pretend to be the person I used to be when really, I've changed like almost a year ago. My family thinks some 5 year old little girl who's not ready for boys yet and I'm in 8th grade. But yeah, I feel pretty caged everyday😔
He's stuck in a mental cage because he can easily fit through. This is symbolic for many people who are stuck in their cages. Whatever the issue may be.
After watching this, I get kind of obsessed with the meaning of this videoclip. I looked for information and found out Sia has a bipolar disorder. And Sia has said that Maddie and Shia were two self states. I think that's the key. Maddie is the mental sick, uncontrollable part. Shia, the healthy one. But the two of them are Sia, in some way. (That's why Maddie at the end tries to get him out of the cage, she wants to save herself.) I think this interpretation it's pretty clear in the part when Shia carries her in his arms (before that, he was carrying her on the back, as if she was a load to him) and Maddie touches several times his forehead, and he changes his face (his mood) everytime she does that. This also would explain why Shia attacks back, because the "mental healthy/rational part" can't stand the situation anymore. Whatever it means (I have no bipolar disorder and maybe I've talked too much) it's been a while that I didn't see anything so beautiful and pure.
Perhaps the cage represents the fathers (shia labouef) bond to his daughter (maggie). The daughter is at an age where she becomes more independent hence the back and forth confrontational dancing. Finally the daughter leaves the cage and hence the bond is slowly deteriorating. Shia has an elastic heart because even though hes hurt he knows its for the better to let maggie grow up. My interpration,
amin_dana23@hotmail.com Makaveli15 its any way you want to think its about, that is what dance art is about.. but its actually 2 sides of sia, she has said thats what its about..
Spot on. I thought the video meant something like that. I thought it meant the two people were parts of one person the negative and positive side of a person, and tr
*And the positive was trying to save the negative by helping it out of the cage, and showing how easy it is to just let it go (by getting out of the cage.)
This video could easily be about addiction. Someone who is an addict oftentimes locks themself in their own prison. When someone tries to help out, there is always conflict, and when the person tries to lead them out, they pull themselves in. At some point, people will stop trying if you do not let them help you.
That part where shia labouf is holding Maddie and she's touching his face, reminds me of the scene in Hook with Robin Williams as Peter pan and one of the lost boys is pushing his face around and touching it and then softly says "There you are, Peter." ...Like she was trying to find her father beneath all the illness.
@@RiteshKumar-ie2inno shit sherlock, lol the dancer is maddie ziegler, but her character represents a young Sia. Shia obviously represents the father character, and this is supposed to be about both their characters' struggles of mental illness
@@Seemarajput8036 sia is the singer, Shia labouf is the actor. In. The. Music. Video. Heaven's above! READ!! First thing i wrote was "Shia is holding HER" as in SHIA LABOUF is holding MADDIE ZEIGLER. 😆 lol y'all are killing me
Watching this for the first time and I can feel every emotion Shia is putting out. What an amazing performance. Almost brought a tear to my one good eye.

I cannot claim to know Sia's thoughts behind the video. But, she is genius! Honestly, a lot of the comments (not all .. many are quite ok and intellectual) are wrong saying shallow things. You can actually interrupt this anyway you want to ( artists) especially will get this). I can relate to this video on multiple levels. It can express a narcissistic relationship in general. They are co dependent on each other and the end best illustrates this. She tries to dance up on him and around him.. He pulls her in and back. Father daughter, boyfriend girlfriend,... whatever... but the pain of emotions and unhealed inner child wounds. I love this video because I think it shows the pain of the narcissistic relationship I endured. And it is beautifully and artisticaly done with great thought and emotion! Well done Sia!
@fluffy penguin. How different? We're all 5 years older since 'Elastic Heart' came about fluffy. Even Maddie Ziegler is only 45 days from turning into an adult at 18 on Sep. 30th. 2020. :)
+Haadi Hussain Er, perhaps because repeatedly exhibiting narcissism and colossal pretension while treating other human beings abusively or as if they are worthless may lead people to criticize a fellow, even if that fellow has really sweet facial hair. But I'm just guessing. Perhaps people just don't get how legendary his beard truly is.
+Haggis Pouch What did he do exactly to treat other beings abusively? I tried googling but didn't get anything maybe im looking in the wrong place. Genuinely interested to know.
In my opinion it's like an inner battle with borderline personality disorder, or perhaps bipolar. The two characters represent two parts of the same person which are in conflict, but want and need to work together.
did you just that's exactly how I see it too. My Mother lost her battle with BPD on June 28th and I listen to this song over and over so that I can feel close to her. ❤❤❤
A passionate interpretive dance that expresses something very close to my heart: the struggle of being TOO BUFF to fit through stuff. This video is about two people doing a dance, but when it ends the man realizes he is too PUMPED to get out of the cage-stage. The pair goes back in to dance more so he'll get all sweaty and hopefully be able to slip through the bars, but he is just too IMMENSE and MUSCULAR to escape. He succumbs to exhaustion as his dance partner tugs on his SHREDDED PIPES to no avail. So powerful. Amazing video :')
+Peyton Parker I know, I'm just saying that if this is suppose to be based on sias childhood growing up and relation with her dad then dang she had a pretty darn rough life
This is my first listen of this song and also of watching the video. Wow, I can't say I expected it to have such a powerful reaction within me! There was such a heartbreaking element to it, and I totally cried lol. It felt like a struggle in someone's mind between their past and present selves, someone locked into their own mental prisons. The adult is limited and stuck, while the child is free to go in and out of the cage, the adult learned to be afraid where the child is fearless and wild. The ending was incredibly tragic to me when he gives up, sometimes the perspectives we set for ourselves (I can never be this or that, I can't feel this way or that way, etc) are their own prisons.
That's part of the symbolism. The cage represents addiction. The girl represents young Sia and he represents Sia's dad. They both struggled with addiction but Sia left that life behind and encourages her father to do the same. She tries to help him and show him how; it's so easy to get out of the cage, out of addiction. But he still struggles, it's like he wants to be in the cage.
Gosh I hate it when people think the man is sexually abusing the girl character. The girl is a younger, freer, happier version of the man/Sia (I don't know who it is representing). The man is heartbroke and hurt, caged up while the girl is trying to free the man from the cage (his fears, heartbreak, and sorrow), but the man won't let go because (I think) he fears he will get heartbroken/hurt again. Thus, the song being called "Elastic Heart".
It's rather easy to see it as a father-daughter relationship, though. It appears as a story about a little girl who is growing up and her father reluctantly realizing his little princess is becoming a woman.
Legion Ivory Yes, but Sia herself even said it in a video, and a social media. She said that she was sorry people thought it was a pedophile music video, and then said that she meant it to be a video about her heartbreak and younger version of herself (the version I explained). 🙃🙃🙃
Borealis Wolfe what I saw was different (no pedo shit tho) I feel like the dance represents drug or alcohol addictions, Maddie (the girl represents the addictions) and Shia is the addict.
People who take away anything sexual from this video do not understand any part of this at all. For starters, the song never states what kind of love it's talking about in the lyrics. Of course it could be a lover kind of thing, but it could also be family love. That is the side this video shows, a struggling relationship between a father and child. It's heartbreaking, emotional, and very vulnerable. It's a beautiful and well done piece, and it's so sad that so many people can't recognize what a fantastic and well thought out piece of art this is. Especially the end, that is so damn powerful. Maddie is a beautiful dancer, and Shia captured the father character so well. They both did a fantastic job, and if you can't see past what they're wearing that's so sad. Not to mention there really isn't anything inappropriate about it. It's traditional dance wear. It's the most basic kind of dancers outfit. That's the point. It's not sexual, and you should not see it that way. It's a symbol of vulnerability. I truly feel bad for people that can't see this video for what it is, because it's so stunning and powerful.
I don't think that the clothes really symbolize traditional dance clothing. It think it's because the lack of clothing shows vulnerability. That's why in Chandelier, Maddie wears the same outfit. Shia represents her father, and because of his mental illness he is vulnerable (reason why he wears similar clothing ), and Maddie wears the clothes because it represents Sia as a child and her being vulnerable and in that environment ultimately could have led her into indulging herself in an addiction.
I absolutely loved Shia's and Maddie's performance in this you can feel the emotions portrayed relating to Sia and her Father, they did a wonderful job, very powerful.
I think of a father and his daughter in this video, his daughter is trying to show him the new world while the father is trying to keep his daughter in the old one...
This video is beautiful. It can be taken in so many different ways.... I wish there were more videos like this...and people weren't so afraid of controversy. This is art and Sia is amazing
+kristin kitty I am so disappointed at the rude and perverted remarks regarding the Sia videos and about that talented little girl. I guess I didn't think there were SO MANY people willing to show their IGNORANCE in a public forum.
+Julie Roberts People are so quick to call this "pedophilic" because it makes them uncomfortable.... there is a behind the scenes video, you can clearly see they are having fun and just dancing!!! Sia's videos are all beautiful and they make me feel something. Anyone could relate to this video if they weren't so closed minded.
Marc Hauser It's not paedophilia. You shouldn't start judging opinions of people who actually get the message of the video, rather than just seeing a man and a girl and thinking ooo he must be a paedophile.
To me this video is conveying the relationship between a struggling father and his daughter who is tirelessly trying to save him from his struggles to no avail, and I can relate.
So my theory without knowing anything about Sia is that this is a depiction of a struggle between her young self and her father. At the end, it seems like they made up but Sia makes it out of the cage and tries to bring her father with her but he can't bring himself to leave.
Agreed!!! Plus by the second day it already passed 4million views!!! Pretty sure that's faster than chandelier...so happy about sia's continued success with her music!
Sharon Smith I used to think of him like I imagine many others do, as that kid from that cheesy little show, but hes actually a great actor now... and a MAN. Hes pretty buff! :)
Reading this as the visual representation of attachment styles. The struggle and cycle of avoidant and anxious people, finally getting to express emotions (Shia's face when tapped), seeking for vulnerability and being 'bitten', and finally one of them breaking the cycle and wanting to become more securely attached but the other cannot follow. Forever trapped in his inner child wound (the cage).
Am i the only one who sees this as a man/father who has strength. this man is fighting his girls mental insanity, and hes going to fight to make her okay. throughout the video he feels like hes losing every battle with her. near the end he gives up and decides to just love her as is, eventually she realizes this and starts to walk away. then loses again to save her. AND WHAM shes trying to save him. there will always be a prisoner to insanity. and Shia LaBeouf never ceases to please
You're describing "Betty Blue", which Sia would have seen in her teenage years but complicate the mix even more as the Male dancer has "children" with the borderline child-women. This is represented by his extreme range of emotions... displayed throughout the dance routine.
Ashley Quinn Beautiful interpretation, That's what I saw in the video also how He wants to protect her and finally at the end lets go to let her face the world. Learning that he must trust her.
Yes,you`re right. The dance surprized me.Maddie is young, but advanced in "lyrical ballet". I danced mostly Classical Ballet, from the age of ca.4,back when we got whipped with the stick,if we did not perform "perfectly",and had to train alone,in a big,big mirrored rom, with only little me,Mrs.Agnes Gjerding,(former Prima Ballerina)..,and our claviature player.. My sister, born when I was 16,learned the more "intimate, personal expressionalism`s" lyrical ballet, that is all about dancing out your emotions and feelings. She was lucky enough to "play her way into the world of dance",without being physically disciplined. "Lyrical" is an often strange dance, but Maddie and Shia did it just beautiful and perfect. Credos to Shia..,who NEVER ceases to amaze us.. Bless you.You must be a special man. Many, many men are "afraid" of a tiny smudge of feelings. May all of your dreams come true.. Hugs from Norway.
I don't see what the fuss is about, it's a beautiful video and Shia is not behaving inappropriately at all. People who are suggesting that it has paedophillic connotations are just being melodramatic and hysterical. Furthermore, for those screaming "paedophile"...it says far more about your own alarming 'proclivities' than it does about the video! - A bit like homophobes being closeted homosexuals, projecting their self-loathing... I love it at 1:33 when Shia climbs to the top of the cage just using his upper body strength.
***** so anytime a man is at the beach with kids around then they should be arrested immediatly because "OMFG HALF NAKED WITH KIDS OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!" give me a break. go watch proper duet dances with young girls. the shit they they do is way more sexual with clothes on. jesus.
Ignore it bro, nothing is pedophilic, and no one's taking it that way, I don't know why you need to highlight an unnoticeable topic 🤔 western people are really sick!
+DerpWaffle what a heartwarming self-made man story. I'm so glad there are people out there to show me how lazy the rest of us are. Thank you so much for this pearl of wisdom.
The best depiction of depression I have ever found. I share with my people who want to understand me. I’m 51. I’ve had depression since 13. I feel so seen by this video.
this video is so incredibly beautiful.... its written and directed by the greatest artists. I don't understand people who are offended or horrified by it... me, I don;t see a young girl and a grown man prejecteing sexual tension at all... I see a little girl and grown man who cares for her playing.... could be a father and daughter... an older brother and his little sister...
I also feel I am seeing a brother and sister, but this is my vision. I agree wholeheartedly with this thoughtful comment, however, as humans, part of our nature is to judge. We need to work on that. :-)
I've seen this video several times (I love the song), and today I watched this video with my son (he's 6), and he said, "Mom, why can't she get the dad out?" My 6yr old saw this video for what it was, and a bunch of grown adults try to turn it into something sexual. I'm not sure if that's sad, or disturbing, or a little bit of both. I think it's a beautiful song and the video was well done.
I don't see what the fuss is about. This video is obviously about two warring parts of a personality trying to come to terms with one another so they can coexist. They don't succeed in the end which could also represent what happens to everybody when they have to grow up and say goodbye to the child in themselves. Is everyone going to scream paedophilia every time a man appears with a little girl? It's disgusting that it is the first conclusion some people jump to. I think Shia and Maddie did an amazing job bring so much emotion to a music video. Well done.
Naked? Just because their clothes are flesh coloured. There are no sexual connotations at all. Imagine them in a beach setting and their clothes are blue. Does that make a difference. They could be a father and daughter playing with each other. Does that make it different for you?
NICELY SAID ,ITS LIKE HOW MILEY CYRUS SAID GOODBYE TO HE ALTER EGO HANNAH MONTANNA, IT WAS IDEAL TO PLAY SHIA IN THE CAGE AS HIS FORMER KID ALTER EGO SELF WAS LOUIS STEVENS, MORE CROWD REACTION, PLUS HIS FACE ALONE ON THE VID RACKS IN VIEWS, PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE CURIOUS, LIKE LETS SEE WHAT LOUIS STEVENS IS UP TO NOW AFTER TRANSFORMERS
Sia is a master of provoking certain emotions and themes in our society which we deem inappropriate or vile. She doesn't do this purposefully but the idea that she is a young girl and Shia is an older, grown man is very important. The cage represents society and life and people's opinions but also the barriers of society which are put up. The young girl has every opportunity to leave and start a life for herself but she ends up stricken by this man. So she goes back to help him, to push him through the barriers which hold him back. This video is beautiful and anyone who thinks this is otherwise has no idea what true art is. They are the ying and yang of life. Obviously this video is open to many different interpretations, and my interpretation could be wrong, which is why this video is so magnificent because in the few short minutes that it runs, you can peer into Sia and see who she is, what she battles with and the mystery of her life. Beautiful.
Your interpretation is so beaultiful, really. But Sia's father has/had double personality, and I'm almost sure that this video represents she and her father and all the other things (that are in the video)... But your interpretation can be also right and may be both meanings
Kathyxaa I think I will just keep believing this is her relationship with her dad (even if she said this), just fits so good.. And harmonize all her life and the music and the video..
Wow I am astounded. I was a classically trained dancer for 14 years and could only dream to be half as good as that child. This has to be the most simple yet powerful music videos I have ever seen. I do however understand people having a problem with a little girl dancing with a grown man like this but I think it boils down to how you choose to read the story. I'm choosing to be inspired and moved.
Well I think the reason why people have a problem with it is they can't grasp the professional aspect of it. All they see is a grown man's body rubbing a young girl's body. They don't realize this has absolutely nothing to do with anything sexual but a defining moment in dance/movement and art. I wouldn't say their minds are in the gutters just because they portray it differently all I can say is watch it with an open mind.
i can see how ppl could have trouble with that. but i think she is a professional dancer and he well he's a professional actor. so just to pl doing their jobs
The story reflects Sia's own life as her father suffered from a mental illness when she was a child and she tried so hard to bring him out of the cage he was trapped in and be with her all the time like any other father. It's beautiful.
Where was this ever sexual? It was merely communitative, expressive dance. Which, by the way, spoke volumes, no sexualization at all. The people that saw sexuality clearly do not speak, nor understand the artistical language. It was a beautiful, non-spoken piece of language. Like sign language can be a dance for the hands, this was a bigger dance. People need to get their minds out of the lavatory.
@@Bukyru i know what you mean and of course sia didn't intend it that way, she often gets the dancer(maddie) to wear an outfit like that in many of her videos. but as someone who was still ten when this video came out and is still only recently turned 16( yup i'm even younger than maddie), I saw why people might think it as inappropriate even though it obviously isn't meant to be, people who condemn this video aren't trying to be inappropriate towards her but on the contrary I think they have her best interests at heart, they just don't want her to look back and regret doing the dance, kind of like how as a child your parents might tell you to stop sitting on the lap of a family friend they don't trust even though the gesture seems innocent. You kind of have to see it from both angles though. even back then I understood the artistic view of the video and feel the costume choice is so flashy clothes don't get in the way of the choreography's narrative.bottom line is there's nothing wrong with the dance just that some people may misinterpret its intentions when they shouldn't, that's all.
sia's music and her videos never fail to mesmerize me. love the concept! forget the haters. whoever reads this stay awesome and hope you have an awesome day :D
SO TRUE! Interpretation is the #1 thing about Isa's music and I just love it. Clearly there is a set meaning to the song but it's nice to start conversation about what people think about the song. My opinion --- one of my favorite songs, I love the musicality and the creativity. And I just love the video and song.
This song always brings me 2 tears... struggling thru a drug addiction, my 2nd son dedicated it 2 me...I can only imagine how it has impacted their lives ...what it has done 2 my 3 children...I'm so sorry.....
I see this as an alcoholic father and his daughter. He's stuck in a cage because he won't get better and she rebels and tries to leave because she's tired of taking care of him but he won't let her. He tries to keep her caged with him because he doesn't want to be alone but then finally in the end he realizes she deserves more and let's her go, but she doesn't want to leave him because he is, after all, her father. However, he won't leave because he's still stuck in his own cage. He "wants" to, but he "can't." This doesn't have to be interpreted as alcoholism though, same thing with being stuck his own cage of drugs, or even depression. I just personally relate to the alcohol theory.
That is a good interpretation though, But of course the main purpose they are supposed to be the same people, she just fights of the bad in her, the end is showing its hard to let go, but she came out stronger. (I'm not saying it down to a T) so that might sound odd.
Caprice Rafiq I think videos are meant for everyone to interpret it in whatever way they connect most with. The way you see it is beautiful as well. :)
samluvscherries - An interesting interpretation. I'm interested if it comes from any personal experience? I interpreted it as a father and daughter, but saw it as just about a daughter growing up. That she has reached an age where she is leaving the cage and her father and becoming her own person. That he wants to cling onto her as a child, but she is becoming a woman.
+Nick Sowers With you on that, very very good video, songs cool too. Good to see Shia Lebeouf doing this sort of thing. I watched Fury nearly all the way through before ir ealized he was part of the main crew. Very good actor.
Piero Scaruffi hahahahahahaha! don't worry dude in this right moment im gonna kill myself because of you yeah im a dancer and im not gonna discuss whit a person that stupid, as yourself :) thanks you make me love my carrer more with those comments :D ! kisses
The best analogy of this vid that I heard was that the cage was a symbol for the adult world and that the dad was trying to keep his daughter there and stop her going wild. Then she goes back in to try and teach him how to be a kid and when he finally realises that he wants out, the cage has gotten too small so he is stuck in the adult world forever. The cage was a symbol of suppressing your wild side and creativity - sort of a metaphor for real life. When you are stuck in the cage for all your life it is really hard, almost impossible to get out. Just one way for looking at it. Shame on those people who say this is pedophilia, it is a beautiful dance with nothing sexual implied at all.
+Ariella Traurig :D maybe there are nothing pedophilia, but how can u explain, that in fact, this video reacts to sexual instincts,a lot of people says it.they see it,and their penis UP,they fap on it,and after they calling it "pedophilia"))))))
+Ariella Traurig That's an interesting take on it. I heard it was based on how She and her father were battling depression, but she was able to escape from it, not him. Hence the heavy emotion at the end.
I see this in several different ways. One is that it's a father/daughter relationship, and whatever his addiction is, her crazy movement indicate that it's affecting her as well. She's trying to get her father back, to get him out of the "cage", and even though he is trying, she can't make that choice for him. He has to make it himself. The moments they are on the ground- that's when she is at her most torn. She then starts running from her father, meaning she's had enough. But, she knows that he needs her. She's his motivation, despite knowing in the end, it's all up to him. Another is that she's his innocence.
To me, it's about initially rejecting companionship in search of something else, but realizing that what you were searching for was nothing without someone by your side. So, what does that say about me? Lol that I'm an introspective dork probably
Some people have "daddy issues" or watch the news way too much... Growing up, I was a daddy's girl and yes he carried me on his shoulders, rocked me, and tucked me into bed, etc. It's sad that we've become a society where everything has to become sexual. Now we have little 12 year old boys humping girls and it's called dancing (which I don't condone). This is an art form, some people get it, some don't. Beautiful song, beautiful video.
Couldn't agree more. Everyone makes everything about sex and divides every single image, sound, and reality into an issue that must be argued, then fought about.
I actually did not know what this video or song was about when I first watched the video. And knowing that Maddie is so young, I knew there had to be something I didn't know or understand yet. First glance, yes this world adds "sex" into anything it sees. But as the video goes on, I picked up on a father/daughter relationship or an older brother/younger sister relationship (due to the random acts of fighting). One thing I learned from dancing my whole life.. NEVER look just on the surface.. there is always an underlying story being told. I absolutely LOVED this video and thing that Maddie and Shia did a spectacular job. It was beautiful. Simply stated. No one could have done this video better. Congrats to them and to Sia!
Ohhhh that was supposed to be her dad?!!! I thought it was just a guy that she was put in the cage with 😂I was about to say this kinda looks like he's a pedifile but now I get it.
It wasn't quite the "Chandelier" video, but it was still beautiful. I'm just as sad as you are with the way the world has gone. Sex sex sex, always forgetting about art. Because the masses are culture-less idiots who can't see beyond their tiny view of the world.
its sad that our society is so perverted. media, celebrities, the streets, the ads, the movies, KIDS SHOWS, everything now a days has a sexual preference. sex, rape, abuse, they are becoming a norm in our society. AND when a video like this comes along, a video filled with passion and heart, people don't see it as truth rather as a sexual thing. I can relate to this in many ways. i see my dad right in front of me when i watch this. love u sia.
I know this video has many different theories but this is how i see it: Shia represents sias dad and Maddie represents sia. The cage represents alcoholism. The dad (Shia) is a alcoholic. The video has fighting because they fought about it. She tries to help him but he cant stop. At the end Maddie escapes and leaves him but he cant stop drinking and is stuck there.
How can you not understand it? The dad is an alcoholic. There fighting because he wont stop drinking. At the end maddie (sia) leaves because she realizes he is helpless. He cant leave the cage meaning he cant stop drinking. Its actually a amazing video. *****
***** That's because you are plain stupid!! And you're lazy too, bc Sam just told you the meaning of the video (the most popular interpretation btw) !!
In the show dance mom's Maddie claims to be portraying a wolf and Shia is a man and they are stuck in the cage together. I like your explanation better though, it makes more sense.
Most people are taking the symbolism for mental illness in the parent, depression. The girl is the daughter and the man the father. So if you see it that way, here's a breakdown of the video. You can stop reading at any point. The cage = living with the illness, both are active participants and sufferers 0:30 conflict between the two, reflective, both ways. 0:45 - suffocation from the situation, trying to convey that to the father 1:15 more conflict back and forth, the daughter is connected through love of the father 'elastic heart' as he moves she's pulled with it.1:36 change of pace, after a conflict, she's alone. His climbing of the cage is a brief moment of relapse, the depressive symptoms are gone for a while, his symptoms/anger are alleviated and his functions return to normal. 1:50 father's mind in a 'good phase' where depression is subdued, reaches out in comfort and sincerity, she's suspicious but 2:15 turns the back as submissive sign accepting his gesture of love 2:21 her anger and rejection, depression, regression and conflict again. 2:28 repeating from earlier in video, living in a cage of chronic illness = years of conflict which repeats 2:50 eyes open to an exit, years have gone by, she's older, she's left him and is free, 3:00 she's 'grown up' 'happy' and 'free', he's still trapped. 3:15 years later when he's much older and she's coming back in his life, back to back submissive again, she cares, she's there. 3:25 distant eyes, he's still lost, 3:33 most heavy hitting part, she forgives him, she cares about him, sees the man and not the illness 3:40 memories, silly faces from childhood, mixed with the conflict memories. 3:50 more years gone by, he's physically aged and an old man (features changed, ears, eyes, posture etc.) 3:58 she see's her father, not the illness, and she cares for him, hope of overcoming the illness together, but he'll always be trapped in a seemingly hopeless situation. song ends but film plays to show this.
I definitely saw it as a father-daughter connection and a kind of struggle when I first watched it. I felt the emotion there but I couldn't work out why; I guess subconsciously we can interpret these things without needing words. Thanks for such a great analysis.
He only thinks he can't get out. The bars are not stopping him.

@Chance Roberson. The girl in the video is Maddie Ziegler from Dance Moms. She does the dances in a few of Sia's videos.
This song is currently pushing me through the hardest heartache.

Neither can I--the music, for me. Meaning? Any?
LOVE This Song Too!!!
Very tribal and so lovely
I LOVE this song, the video is a bit creepy..... but I still like it!
creepy?--only because we can't figure it out
This video somehow always brings me to tears.
I see it like, two partners, having slight internal wars, then they discover the other person, they learn how to accept, this, while dancing together, until they find ways, the other, isn't ready to leave the cage that confines them, the one isn't able to process or come fully to some terms. . . But not after carrying her, and her interchild and help tame it a little
When she looks back she sees him struggling, and she runs back to him, allowing him to not fight his own internal wars, alone.
I watched this for the first time today. This is a beautiful video with amazing acting.

if you know what it is about, many dont and they see it wrong and tear it apart,, video is soo good and heartbreaking
I don't like it ;)
People don't know art anymore.
Malcolm Meryn you literally cant spell

I agree Deja
I don't know how anyone could have read this as an inappropriate relationship... The song and the video were both beautiful.

Sia is an amazing singer with deep meanings in her songs, not just a regular singer who would sing about dirty things and girls or guys.
Muffin paws No

sia is actually Maddie Ziegler from dance moms,if you didn't know
pink rose1434 no sia does not like to show her face so she asked Maddie to do it
i love her because she is so different than all those other artists
She tries to have that mysterious look

This is the perferomik
Why Sia never shows her face?. Is she ugly as fuck or something?. Just ask..
the part where maddie tries to get shia out of the cage but he can't get out reminds me of those moments when you are trying to get someone out of something like depression or anorexia or a disorder like that, and just like maddie ran out, it looks so easy to just leave it, but for some people it's difficult to get out of the cage, like something pulls you back, you are afraid of what people will say, or you are just to attached to it. then people trying to desperately pull you out but you can't no matter how you try and im crying help
it could also be trying to get out of an addiction to drugs or alcohol or bad habits like cutting or stuff like that
Honestly, kind of how I feel about the idea of being myself. I want to but I don't know how. In this case, I am Shia who can't get out of the cage..
laci Tippett I feel the same.

Lol yes that's right
I don't even try to understand those people anymore, I just ignore
Brilliant video. Makes you feel his pain at the end. He's stuck in a cage while the other one can easily leave.
He's stuck in a mental cage because he can easily fit through. This is symbolic for many people who are stuck in their cages. Whatever the issue may be.
Interesting video. Who knew Shia La Beouf had that much talent? I'm seriously impressed.
Kylie B Then you haven't seen enough. The dude can act, that was clear a long time ago
Tamara Laird They can both leave the cage , the distance between those rebars is big enough (3:02).
Zsolt Deak Hahaha, let's keep this sad feeling anyway...
(That's why Maddie at the end tries to get him out of the cage, she wants to save herself.)
I think this interpretation it's pretty clear in the part when Shia carries her in his arms (before that, he was carrying her on the back, as if she was a load to him) and Maddie touches several times his forehead, and he changes his face (his mood) everytime she does that.
Im totally agree with you Amanda M
She isn't Sia
@@RiteshKumar-ie2inno shit sherlock, lol the dancer is maddie ziegler, but her character represents a young Sia. Shia obviously represents the father character, and this is supposed to be about both their characters' struggles of mental illness

In my opinion it's like an inner battle with borderline personality disorder, or perhaps bipolar. The two characters represent two parts of the same person which are in conflict, but want and need to work together.
did you just yes! I’m so glad someone else sees it that way
did you just that's exactly how I see it too. My Mother lost her battle with BPD on June 28th and I listen to this song over and over so that I can feel close to her. ❤❤❤

I tought this video is Sia's not Maddie's ....
Bailey Harper
sia doesn't show her face. she thought maddie and shia could tell the story best
Janath Swafford It's just a pretentious art thing?
A passionate interpretive dance that expresses something very close to my heart: the struggle of being TOO BUFF to fit through stuff. This video is about two people doing a dance, but when it ends the man realizes he is too PUMPED to get out of the cage-stage. The pair goes back in to dance more so he'll get all sweaty and hopefully be able to slip through the bars, but he is just too IMMENSE and MUSCULAR to escape. He succumbs to exhaustion as his dance partner tugs on his SHREDDED PIPES to no avail.
So powerful. Amazing video :')
wtf

You're a fucking poet, I tear'd up a lil'! :)
Great interpretation.....after-all, it is Shia LeBUFF! BADOOM BOOM! lol
so this video is trying to show that being muscular is a bad thing?
Sia is out of this world..i admire her so much as an Artist. She is not 1 in 100 million, she is simply unique...

That isn't Sia. Sia is the person who is singing and Maddie Ziegler( My Fav Dancer) is mini Sia
+Peyton Parker I know, I'm just saying that if this is suppose to be based on sias childhood growing up and relation with her dad then dang she had a pretty darn rough life
+IEnvySpoons I thought this was supposed to be a struggle with her inner child?. Idk tho, her videos are kinda pretentiously abstract. Nice song tho.
+JimBobWales it's actually about her emotions fighting. I think she's bipolar
That is exactly what I saw too! Makes perfect sense with the lyrics as well.
Same here.
well said!!x
Spot on.
Amen!!!
I love Shia in this... he is so good at facial acting his emotions come through so clearly.. i wish Sia put him and Maddy in more of her videos
4 years later and I still thinking that he could have gone out the cage 3:03
cris Cris true
He doesn't want to go out the cage
Ricardo Milos sure
absolutely
Very well interpreted!
Borealis Wolfe what I saw was different (no pedo shit tho) I feel like the dance represents drug or alcohol addictions, Maddie (the girl represents the addictions) and Shia is the addict.
Your interpretation is just your interpretation. It's not "right"... and others aren't "wrong"...
Couldn't have said it better :)
The part I liked the most was the end. I just could feel the helplessness in Shia's face when Maddie tried to take him out of the cage.
Well said!!
Agreed. Not about sex. Father, daughter and mental illness. Sia is awesome!
I absolutely loved Shia's and Maddie's performance in this you can feel the emotions portrayed relating to Sia and her Father, they did a wonderful job, very powerful.
I think of a father and his daughter in this video, his daughter is trying to show him the new world while the father is trying to keep his daughter in the old one...

there is a behind the scenes video, you can clearly see they are having fun and just dancing!!!
Sia's videos are all beautiful and they make me feel something. Anyone could relate to this video if they weren't so closed minded.
This video may be considered "controversial", but I'm just happy that Shia LaBeouf is doing something artistic and meaningful with himself.
Marc Hauser It's not paedophilia. You shouldn't start judging opinions of people who actually get the message of the video, rather than just seeing a man and a girl and thinking ooo he must be a paedophile.
Marc, you're a pervert
To me this video is conveying the relationship between a struggling father and his daughter who is tirelessly trying to save him from his struggles to no avail, and I can relate.
tanya white this video is awesome , great the best video ever made
Yeah, he is making up from those terrible transformer films.
So my theory without knowing anything about Sia is that this is a depiction of a struggle between her young self and her father. At the end, it seems like they made up but Sia makes it out of the cage and tries to bring her father with her but he can't bring himself to leave.
This video tops Chandelier. It ripped my heart out. The ending....my God.

musicisbrilliant Shia matured so fucking much in a short amount of time
musicisbrilliant Agreed ^_^ Love this video. I think it's sweet actually.
yes you right
Reading this as the visual representation of attachment styles.
Thank you I was trying to figure It out. Shia and the little girl did a great job and Sia is incredible

I love it at 1:33 when Shia climbs to the top of the cage just using his upper body strength.
sam teagan sin
***** so anytime a man is at the beach with kids around then they should be arrested immediatly because "OMFG HALF NAKED WITH KIDS OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!" give me a break. go watch proper duet dances with young girls. the shit they they do is way more sexual with clothes on. jesus.

Ignore it bro, nothing is pedophilic, and no one's taking it that way, I don't know why you need to highlight an unnoticeable topic 🤔 western people are really sick!

Naw they fuckin, dummy
Dre BWaynetoyou i think its like he's trying to tame her then when she hurts him she realizes he was only trying to help her
if you have seen season 5 of Dance Moms Maddie says she is playing the role of a wolf.

I think it's a beautiful song and the video was well done.
best coment here.
+Danielle Gilbert Because the we live in a twisted world with twisted people.
It's not sexual though lol
Maybe cuz six year olds don't know about sex? Just a thought.
+Danielle Gilbert well if that is the story dont you think they could have done it with more cloths on
Even the video is pure class what an expression of dance and telling a story.
NICELY SAID ,ITS LIKE HOW MILEY CYRUS SAID GOODBYE TO HE ALTER EGO HANNAH MONTANNA,
IT WAS IDEAL TO PLAY SHIA IN THE CAGE AS HIS FORMER KID ALTER EGO SELF WAS LOUIS STEVENS, MORE CROWD REACTION,
PLUS HIS FACE ALONE ON THE VID RACKS IN VIEWS, PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE CURIOUS, LIKE LETS SEE WHAT LOUIS STEVENS IS UP TO NOW AFTER TRANSFORMERS
Absolutely agree
True!
Did you check the poses? What regular kid does this? The dude could have been a woman and that's it.
Beautiful.
Yes, I love your interpretation, its what I was thinking when I watched it too. This video is absolutely beautiful.
Your interpretation is so beaultiful, really. But Sia's father has/had double personality, and I'm almost sure that this video represents she and her father and all the other things (that are in the video)... But your interpretation can be also right and may be both meanings
I have no idea what true art means so thanks for the explanation...I guess...
Sylvia Gomide Sia already said this video is not about her relationship with her dad. She said is about two warring 'sia' self states.
She is 12
Um lol ok thanks?
Happy 10 years aniversary

You can't escape the cage if you don't believe in yourself that you can escape it. Caged animals learn helplessness.
This is beautiful art i don’t know why Sia had to apologize. Nothing even seemed sexual.
People who oversexualize kids see something wrong with this video
@@maa6471 Side note here also: the outfit that Maddie has 'had to' wear is... just a dance leotard. They are incredibly common.
As a girl/child I saw nothing wrong with it at all it was sad in a way though I just cant tell what it is

@@StoicPhilosophyyyy probably means your into grown men chasing little girls around
That is a good interpretation though,
But of course the main purpose they are supposed to be the same people, she just fights of the bad in her, the end is showing its hard to let go, but she came out stronger. (I'm not saying it down to a T) so that might sound odd.
samluvscherries very inspiring text ;)
Caprice Rafiq I think videos are meant for everyone to interpret it in whatever way they connect most with. The way you see it is beautiful as well. :)
Haydster Simpson haha fantastic.
samluvscherries - An interesting interpretation. I'm interested if it comes from any personal experience? I interpreted it as a father and daughter, but saw it as just about a daughter growing up. That she has reached an age where she is leaving the cage and her father and becoming her own person. That he wants to cling onto her as a child, but she is becoming a woman.
the whole time I was just thinking... how did her wig not fly?
they have this thing between the layers, she wears something to cover her main hair and then the thing is attached to the wigs under bits.
Woven into the original hair, which is flattened and held down with elastics. Then at the hair line, spirit gum.

But there is actually pedophilia in the industry and a lot celebrities have came out and said this. Soooo.....
I also think he is scared of her wild personality and wants to control it because he thinks it is dangerous to be wild/childish.
That's not the meaning sia posted the meaning
+Ariella Traurig :D maybe there are nothing pedophilia, but how can u explain, that in
fact, this video reacts to sexual instincts,a lot of people says it.they see it,and their penis UP,they fap on it,and after they calling it "pedophilia"))))))
+Videos and other things Yes but everyone is open to their interperetation of it, and take what meaning they want.
+Ariella Traurig That's an interesting take on it.
I heard it was based on how She and her father were battling depression, but she was able to escape from it, not him. Hence the heavy emotion at the end.

Happy 10 years of this clip . Thank you SO MUCH Sia ❣️
Another is that she's his innocence.
video is rubbish(tells me notting about notting ) ..just listen song
ACTUALLY it has a message, either you see it or you don't

Some people have "daddy issues" or watch the news way too much... Growing up, I was a daddy's girl and yes he carried me on his shoulders, rocked me, and tucked me into bed, etc. It's sad that we've become a society where everything has to become sexual. Now we have little 12 year old boys humping girls and it's called dancing (which I don't condone). This is an art form, some people get it, some don't.
Beautiful song, beautiful video.
Couldn't agree more. Everyone makes everything about sex and divides every single image, sound, and reality into an issue that must be argued, then fought about.
They call it having your mind in the gutter for a reason. That's where their minds are.
I can relate to this in many ways. i see my dad right in front of me when i watch this. love u sia.
Mei Chan 1983 yas, give that girl a cookie.
This isn't pedophilia! He's not like benson her over and givin it to her in the butt! He fucking dancing!
Aslam alakaim im a muslim too
BlueberrypopPopular Videos cool story bro but blueberrypoppopular isn't a muslim name. so i call BS
Couldn't of said it better myself.
I know this video has many different theories but this is how i see it:
Shia represents sias dad and Maddie represents sia.
She actually told Maddie that her "character" was a wolf in this video. Shia was a human and they have been trapped in a cage for a year together
In the show dance mom's Maddie claims to be portraying a wolf and Shia is a man and they are stuck in the cage together. I like your explanation better though, it makes more sense.
I just thought it was incredibly weird before.... and now I'm sad and can't decide if it's more beautiful or more tragic.
Reminds me of a relationship i had. Very powerful and Sias voice is beyond magnificent ❤

3:50 more years gone by, he's physically aged and an old man (features changed, ears, eyes, posture etc.) 3:58 she see's her father, not the illness, and she cares for him, hope of overcoming the illness together, but he'll always be trapped in a seemingly hopeless situation. song ends but film plays to show this.
thanks for explanation! the video was beautiful but i didnt get anything! lol
Jesus!! Thank you for putting this into words, people need to see your comment!!!
Beautiful interpretation
Thank you soo much omg I understand stand noww
I definitely saw it as a father-daughter connection and a kind of struggle when I first watched it. I felt the emotion there but I couldn't work out why; I guess subconsciously we can interpret these things without needing words. Thanks for such a great analysis.
