Seems like Duran was frustrated--felt humiliated--couldn't bear the blow to his narcissism.

duran quit because he was getting beat. no fighter should ever quit like that. but everyone makes mistakes sometimes and he paid for that night. he made up for that and went on to have a great career. he is still one of the best of his era and no one can doubt his warrior heart, that was just his bad night.

They forced Duran into a immediate rematch, had nothing to do with sugar ray, he wanted Duran next but it could have been 8 months later. Duran was enjoying his victory to much, had to drop a lot of weight and was forced to the early rematch, Ray handled the situation through the years with class with everything he went through. Duran is still one of the greats, it's a shame this happened and forever will be linked to his career. If Duran would have been 100% Ray might have still out boxed Duran but you never know, one thing is for certain, he would have never quit the fight and would have gave it his all! I respect both legends and they would have mopped the floor with the boxers we have today!

I'm so happy watching this after AJ's performance in the second Ruiz bout. Now I know he'll go down as one of the greatest. Shit look at the hate Leonard got and he made the guy say "NO MORE!" but still got called a coward and a bum. I guess Loma is a bum too, fuck it well let's throw Ali in there as a bum also, just for all the people who should be watching UFC or even the movie 'BloodSport'! Because obviously boxing (the art of hit and not getting hit) isn't for you. Thanks guys, it's really comforting to know that the haters will have no say whatsoever in the greatness of fighter, cheers.

If you are old enough to actually remember this and you know boxing, you will understand that both fights were won from the neck up. In Montreal, Duran capitalized on Leonard's youthful foolish pride and that edge manifested in the ring. In the rematch, Leonard capitalized on Duran's gluttonous ways and the 8M payday carrot, which was crazy money for a non heavyweight at the time, gave Duran an offer he couldn't refuse (he only made 1.5M) in the first fight. Difference? Leonard took his lesson like a man. In the first half of fight 1, Duran was beating the brakes off Leonard. Instead of quitting like he's admitted to considering, he sucked it up, and almost still won. Watch the first fight and tell me who was fresher at end. I love Duran but there's no fucking excuse for the way he quit.

Duran said before the fight he was in better condition than the first fight and yet he quit.
Nothing was wrong with Duran. Duran`s trainer said in the same documentary nothing was wrong with Duran he just knew he was goint to get beat by leonard and quit.
Duran told his trainer to make up some excuse for why he the new welterweight champion QUIT in the middle of hisfirst defence..
The date means nothing Duran was ready he just wasnt good enough.

Duran was simply a brawling bully. At lightweight he brought his fights into a brawl knowing he had a harder punch than everyone else.
When he fought leonard in the first fight he was lucky that leonard brawled not boxed and lucky to get a very close decision considering the fight was even until the final round and he hardly threw a punch in it.
Leonard had faster hands, feet, combinations than Duran, better lateral movement, versatility and beat better opposition.

bandamardu's right....durran never looked hurt although he took so much on his chin like SRL.... sugar leonard crumbled early in 1st fight and got hurt and he later confessed in the interview 'bandamardu' cited and i quote "every punch that he hit me with and i'm not exageratting, every punch he hit me with to the body to the hips felt like bricks, stones, rocks...he knocked my teeth back my first 3-4 teeth he knocked em back" so if that's not what's hurt then wonder what is.

You only admit the part of the documentary that fits your story. Not the part where Leonard said plan 2 was hit move and humiliate.
A 3rd match with Duran who quit in the middle of a title fight was not bankable.
The brutal fact that you cannot escape from is that Duran was fit and healthy was expecting a brawl got a boxing lesson instead and to save face ....QUIT.

  • @rubendrakkar
    @rubendrakkar 14 лет назад

My argument is simple: Esteban De Jesus, defeat Duran in his prime, and Duran knew he lost that fight legally and he didn´t quit, he accept it and continue challenging him a couple of times. This is becuase De Jesus fight him hard and that's the fight, an opponent must do.
But when a fighter doesnt want a fight hard and he is running like a chicken (leonard) he is mocking other fighter ability. Ray Leonard yes he mocked Duran, but the demonstration wasn't a fight. It was a show

Imagine the promotional failure if Duran was going to start the mocking also. In my opinion you demonstrate that you win an opponent, only through hard fight. Now what happened here, if LEONARD IS NO COWARD, WHY THEN HE DIDN'T ACCEPT ANOTHER REMATCH ASAP? He claimed that the press was going destroy it. sugar leonard knew that if he was to fight again with Duran ASAP he knew that he cannot come with the same strategy, he will have to fight HARD.

Leonard went from welterweight to light heavyweight champ. Won more titles. Fought better opposition. Had a classier boxing style.
Duran was still in his prime when Leonard outclassed him second time round.
Many people throught the 'brawl in montreol' (1st fight) was won by leonard or was a draw even though leonard stopped boxing and fought the 'street fight' that favoured Duran..
All the top fighters of his era beat Duran.
But leonard beat all the top fighters of his

I have watched the documentary from start to finish. There were months in between the fights. Duran was ready.
I remember 1980 ( i`m old enough) Duran was full of confidence and bravery before the fight. He taunted leonard. But regretted it later.
Duran was fighting at 140 easily from 1978 onwards. He beat palmino and was already a bona fida welterweight so stop making excuses.
Duran was simply outclassed by a quicker more talented boxer. hearns, benitez did same 2 him

  • @judaschongo
    @judaschongo 15 лет назад +1

a coward? this man was viciously KO'd by Hearns if he had quit after the beating he was taking in the 1st rd., nobody would of blamed him, but he went out on his shield like a true a warrior. Or how about his war with Barkley at the age of 37? the man who conquered Hearns twice. Duran simply quit without being hurt, could of very possibly been a fix too.

  • @kingtyomama6564

Duran was sick during this fight due to having to lose a lot of weight. If you rreally watch this fight, Roberto was holding his own and couldnt move as well as the first fight where he set a hellacious pace. Look at their careers, both were unbelievable. Roberto was a 130 lb champ in his prime and ended up as an older fighter beating Davey Moore and Blade Barkley at much higher weights (168). Leonard won some great matches as well.

no it just validates the point that he wasnt the same fighter and he couldnt continue
you are strange even though leonards admits his tactics on how he planned that rematch
when duran asked for a 3rd rematch immediately leonard said no
    so your answers are there
he got a boxing lesson tho he wasnt even hurt hearns beat duran down that was brutal but shit happens
same way camacho took out leonard its how the cookie crumbles

If ever a man was looking for excuses, it was this interview. Not to mention Duran fought on and on past his day which he said he would not do. I'm sure Duran regrets that emotional moment in which he embarrassed himself. The only thing that has happened in boxing that became worse that him quiting that fight ,.. was Tyson biting off Holyfield's ear twice.
Two of the lowest points of the boxing game.
Durand fell to a moment. Tyson was simply a wacko incapable of being a class act at all.

Leonard knew Duran being ill disciplined balloons between fights. Duran did this throughout his whole career. Nothing new here.
You forgot the rest of the documentary where Duran`s trainer says there was NOTHING wrong with Duran during the 2nd fight when he just QUIT.
Duran was inside the weight so whats the problem?
The same documentary leonard says he plans to make duran look stupid by using his superior boxing skills. Which he did very successfully.

Just read several comments about sugar ray being less than a true champion for catching Duran out of shape for the second fight. As a professional in any sport, your health, Your conditioning, an your body, is your first priority to enable yourself to compete an be competitive at the highest level of competition. If Duran had as much as 1% un certainly of his health an conditioning ...he should not have fought

Teeth being rocked back and knocked out is so very different.
Duran looked outclassed he was expecting another brawl but instead he got a boxing lesson.
So explain why a new world champion boxer quit in the middle of a bout when even according to you he was not bing hurt?
Makes it even worse. Duran not being hurt but still quitting lol

duran had 106 pro fights lost 16. that means he won 90 pro fights. hagler only lost once and i believe never knocked down. leonard one of the greatest and so is hearns. but what makes them great is that they all fought each other at there peaks not afraid to trade punches. now days good boxer void each other till the time right £$
Duran is not racist he was bully. his first lost was to a black porto rican. this guy at a later date died of aids but who was there hugging him calling him champ.

Tyson didn't model himself after Durran and his indiscipline cannot be solely attributed to his following of someone. He was brought up in that manner his upbringing was rough, his father had walked out.. he admitted to having getting into street fights and coming home with clothes that he didn't pay for. He sed he never experienced love until he met Cus D'Amato. He was always an angry kid with no brain literally. No wonder he bit cheat Holyfield in frustration and also got robbed by Don King.

Duran won his first title against buchanan by punching him below the belt.
The second over leonard when he threw few punches in the dying rounds of a close fight.
His third over davey moore when he deliberately thumbed him in the eye and blinded him. ( Later he tried to do the same to Hagler).
Fourth over iran barkley was a sympathy vote,( Though i was routing for duran in that one).
No offence to Duran but he was NEVER in the same class as Sugar Ray Leonard.

duran wasnt in his prime in the 2nd fight watch the documentary leonard even admitted that he wanted to get the rematch as soon as duran was off training so he could exploit his rest don king always being selfish made that fight happen even after listening to duran ask for extension refused n made the fight
so how was he in shape?
by the way the first fight had duran won clean look at leonards face he looked dejected and deflated duran knew he had won

@bandamardu hahahha, you guys talk about Duran like if he was in his prime here. Remember he started boxing professionally in Feb '68. Forward to the Hearns fight, it was already 15 years in boxing and for the Hagler 14. The first Leonard fight 12. I think this is unequaled since Leonard was at his best ever. Leonard, Hearns, Hagler fall short to Duran. That is why Duran is mentioned in the same sentence as Robinson and Armstrong.

speaks volumes as to what leonards view or your view of success is so money is key to show success
duran fought de jesus 3 times to prove he was the better man
leonard didnt even wana entertain a rematch against hagler
so its in his nature to value the green which is why he is respected but not idolised like duran cos even tyson dedicated fights to him

They thruth Duran quit because he was force to fight when he was not ready, and by the fact that after beating SRL on the 1st fight and showing the wold who was a better boxer. All SRL's wishes were meet for the 2nd fight, like a bigger ring and gloves, (bigger gloves bigger ring big edge to SRL and Duran out of shape, Done Deal! SRL did not have the balls and the skills to beat Duran.

Duran hearns hagler benitez never rematched with each other.......the only one of them who gave rematches was leonard.
All 4 men easily beat Duran.

I won't get into who was better from that time, all of them were great. Duran, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Benitez. They all fought each other except from Benitez-Hagler. They won some and lost some, Duran was the only one to beat Ray, all the others lost to him(IMO Hagler beat Ray). That's what boxing is missing today, the best fighting the best. Leonard retired rather than fighting Hagler and Hearns in a rematch, but other than that the five were great and deserve our respect...

Duran tried to postpone the fight but leonard applied pressure on don king to make duran fight that day.
For me i think that duran is one of the best boxers in the world out of the fab 4 he was the best for me leonard was the media darling like oscar de la hoya

@d4c3a1 Paliza? perdía por dos puntos ..Duran jamás se retiraría por una "paliza" simplemente el sabía que no estaba preparado para esa pelea. Paliza? ciego!

@Solowizard still 8th of all time ...and actually helps people ..so I think he deserves a little more respect.
but of course you don't think so because you only looked at his failures to devalue his status as one of the greatest lightweights in the history of boxing.

@bandamardu stop making fuckin excuses leonard took his 1st defeat like a man went away revised his tactics and came back and totally embarrassed duran in new orleans ! there was a rematch clause in the contract and duran new this but made excuses that he was not in shape yet he weighed the same as he did in the 1st fight !! paid proffesionals know the score !! he got outboxed period !!

Yeah you named some good ones no doubt about it...are they a Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Ray Leonard or a Thomas Hearns?
    No not even close.
In fact Marvin Hagler would have systematically dismantled ever fighter you just named there.
Are they "good" ...yes... are they going to be considered some of the "greatest" ever ...no
De La Hoya isnt from your crew anyhow but yes he WAS great.
The others as compared to the fighters Ive named?
No brother sorry they dont compare, unfortunately

    @SirHappyThe1st
all 4 men easily beat duran?
    you are biased as hell
hearns beat duran hands down that was durans fault should have taken him more serious
he was the first man to take hagler 15 rounds
and he beat leonard coming up from lightweight
tyson won the title by 21 similar to duran so what if he was bad mannered it what goes on in the ring that counts no points for being a nice person

My friend you're sadly mistaken that isnt "elitist" talk that is simply FACT.
The day the "new generation" grows up. Is the day we will see "Great" fighters again
ie. thomas hearns or marvin hagler etc. etc.
Unfortunately your crew is too selfish, childish and disloyal. So you all stay in the "decent" category.
None of your crew fires me up while watching them fight like these two men did. Because none of your crew displays traits of "real men".
    Real men make "GREAT" fighters...Respect

If all u so called experts in the comments think Ray was a better fighter then let me ask u this. Why does the ring mag espn and basically anybodies opinion that matters always rate Duran in the top 5 of all time?? Yes Ray was great but Duran was better!!!

The fight SHOULD had been in Duran´s terms, he was the champion or not? But Sugar is from the US, Duran from a third world country. That´s all.

He also swallowed boxes of diuretics in the three days before the fight so he could lose 10 pounds in three days. Imagine losing 10 pounds in 3 days.

@rickyp4ever Look I respect the hell outta Duran, but he quit and lost this fight here, thats all I am saying. Duran was not scared of anyone and faught the best and moved up to do so, one of the best fighters to ever fight bar none! Definitely the toughest along with Ali or Frazier. I am just wondering why you are still so upset over this fight here and argue in every thread about it? Roberto won that first fight and I figured you would be happy there?
