John Byrne was my favorite artist as a kid, I bought everything and anything he had his hands on. He was the only reason I ever started getting DC comics when he revamped Superman. His pencils STILL look beautiful. John Byrne doing this would be the ONLY reason that I would buy a Marvel comic book today.
I've always loved his art style. Big John Buscema is my all time favorite artist, then comes Lee, Campbell, and McFarland. Keep forgetting to put Byrne on my list. He definitely needs to come back.
As a kid collecting comics back in the late 70's/early 80's my "key" comics were anything Byrne did. Tried to collect all of his books even if it were just the covers. At a convention, I had him draw me 2 figures and chose Spiderman fighting a robot as I loved his Spiderman annual or maybe it was a king size and liked the way he drew robots like Rog 2000. It's framed on my bookshelf still.
Agreed. It blows my mind that those classic Byrne FF's aren't worth a ton more than they are! People are willing to fork out a ton for stupid modern variants, but awesome stuff like that goes for pennies? At least his run on Uncanny X-men are at prices worthy of their greatness.
Do you understand that the majority of people who ENJOYED Byrne and liked his comics have RETIRED from the hobby now over the past decade because they were upset at the direction the comics industry went in and that they WERE TOLD to their faces that the industry didn't need their patronage anymore? Comic book fans are among the MOST ABUSED FANBASES out there. It's a horrible relationship and you have to have absolutely no self-esteem and self-respect to keep going back for more from Marvel or DC regularly after the curtain was drawn and most of us saw what the majority of people working in that industry are like now! This could be the most wonderful X-Men story -- I've heard of ANOTHER "What If" storyline Claremont and Byrne concocted that also sounded nice, too -- BUT it's probably too little, too late for most people. And the people who STILL enjoy Marvel Comics now are a different group of people than the hardcore guys they DROVE OUT this past decade. Those people who are left, the final Zombie wave, I don't think would like Byrne as much as diehard fans. I think the last things Byrne did I genuinely liked were the Captain America/Batman crossover comic and the first two DC Generations books. There were reasons they struck his last Spider-Man run from continuity and why Wonder Woman fans are VERY split on his 3-year run on that title. I still like the acknowledged classics he did in the past (best X-Men run with Claremont; FF run arguably as good at better than Lee-Kirby; very good runs on the Avengers/WCA, Captain America, and Marvel Team-Up) and he WAS the last guy who did She-Hulk right. It's sad to see where the Jade Giantess has fallen since then.
the industry has been on its deathbed for more than 20 years, largely due to modern creators and the changing of business practices. Example: Delays with pages and issues were rarely a thing before 1990. Professionalism has... changed, if not fallen to how it used to be. Jim Aparo would never turn a page in late. The other thing is that modern creators want to tell their own stories with the characters, regardless of whether or not said story fits that character.
For people watching this after the fact, a deal with Marvel for this project did not happen, so John has been “publishing” the issues on his website forum (in the Fan Fic section) a page per day for quite a long time now. There are 12 issues available to read (so far) and they’re quite entertaining, imho. Pencils only (lettering is done digitally, I assume), but each page is quite large so you can really see all the work that went into it. It’s a shame that it didn’t work out with Marvel, but at least interested readers can enjoy it regardless.
Danger Unlimited needs to come back. The greatest non-FF family superhero book. After John continued the Next Men, I really thought he would return to Danger Unlimited.
I’d love to see him at a convention. I’m surprised to hear that he was at the Boston Convention. He doesn’t do many of them. What year did he do the Boston convention?
If this does happen, I'd love to see Byrne also do a set of mini-series: X-Men, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, She-Hulk, and Avengers. 5 issues each, would take about two years to completion if he did them all back-to-back (or 4 issues each with a one-month break in between - - the man's gotta rest!) Wait, I forgot Marvel Team Up and Heroes for Hire, a couple more of his great classics!
I'll buy X-Men comics again if John Byrne will come back. His one my favorite story teller and artist who ever handled Uncanny X-Men. One of the other story tellers and pencilers I also admired who handled the Uncanny X-Men was Chris Claremont, Scott Lobdell, Marc Silvestri, Jim Lee, John Romita Jr., Jack Kirby, Whilce Portacio, Joe Madureira and Chris Bachalo.
Thanks for this interview. Byrne seems in a good place. And it's kind of interesting how even his voice sounds different somehow -- more mellow? -- from when he was younger. In any case, this is the greatest comics-related Idea that I've heard in a long, long time. Send John Byrne "back in time" to fix Marvel's greatest mistake (even though I do understand why Jim Shooter made them do it). Well, maybe the greatest mistake except for then bringing Jean Grey *back* -- and how they did it! That pretty much put the nail in the coffin for any remaining interest I had in the Marvel universe right there. Hopefully they'll reach out to Terry Austin to see if he's available; he may have some time on his hands now that Sonic the Hedgehog got cancelled last year!
AAAAAHHHH JOHN BYRNE IS BACK!!!!😃😃😃😃😃😆😆😆😆😆🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯😆😆😆😆😆😃😃😃😃😃👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 AAAAAHHH!!!! THANK YOU STAN!!!! ALL BLESSINGS AND PRAISE BE APON HIM!!!!!, AND JHON BYRNE!!!!🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🖖🏾🖖🏾🖖🏾🖖🏾🖖🏾
It’s October 12, 2019. Where are the books? Come on, Marvel. A comic book legend is offering you a brand new original X-Men story. All you have to do is print it and get our money.
He decided not to go with Marvel and is instead publishing X-Men Elsewhen on his forum, Byrne Robotics. So far, so great. The stories and art get better with each issue. This is classic X-Men for today. Free of the trash that has been dumped on theses characters over the years. Just one team. Cyclops isn't dick. Kitty Pryde isn't a genius, Ninja warrior - just an ordinary teenager who happens to be a mutant - and Magneto is bad, bad as in shockingly evil. Oh and if anyone ever thought there's nothing fresh and original that can be done with Jean Grey/Phoenix, well...Mr Byrne will make you think again. My hope is that he may have a change of heart in the future and allow Marvel to publish these fully inked and colored.
Did fans support the X-Men Hidden Years which was his previous return??? I recall the book being cancelled pretty quicky despite folks yearning for Byrne to return.
Best comic artist of all time except for Kirby. I have almost every issue Byrne has ever done and will never let them go. I would buy anything he chooses to do. Marvel would be stupid not to every publish his X-men pages or any other pages.
Marvel is stupid. And it s a movie company now. Comics, no more. The movie is driving the business and they want tontake all the attention of the fans. As I see it they dont want the comics side to shine again. Also they are infested by woke people. So either u like wokism or not, as a matter of fact, a John Byrne has really no place in this kind of environment.
Last X- Men comic I bought, was somewhere in the 200's... before #250, I'm sure. Just got tired of them, and the storylines. Other than the occasional peek, never came back. If Byrne, and Marvel, ever put this book out.... geez! I'd run.... RUN, to the local comic shop !
If you haven't already, have a look at his X-Men Elsewhen on his forum. The art is amazing. He's decided not to go with Marvel with this and has instead gifted it to fans - in sequence, a page a day - for free.
This guy is hard pressed to outdo Chris Claremont. The whole “This is what the X-Men would be like if I was still writing it after this storyline” has already been done. We’ve already seen Jean Grey not die from the Dark Phoenix Saga due to the retcon for Cyclops’ character assassination...I mean X-Factor.
Hey, good for you, man! You won the Most Moronic Comment award on a Marvel RUclips video! Congratulations. With how dense and fucking retarded comment sections on vids about Marvel always are, that's quite the accomplishment.
John doing his X-Men book is probably the only thing that would get me back into a shop to buy comics again.
Agreed
Same here
Yep if John comes back to Marvel I’m buying all issues lol
John Byrne and Chris Claremont should go back and Marvel should pay them a lot for it 💰
Claremont only puts out like a couple issues a year and gets paid a sizable stipend i believe
Claremont recently did a short story in the X-Men Wedding Special. So there's that.
Nah, just Byrne! Claremont is overrated and unnecessary.
Jeremiah SIKE! I see you got those two mixed up there. Funny joke.
I would love that. But Byrne and Claremont didn’t like each other and Byrne left X-Men because they disagreed on the plot.
His artwork is still beautiful.
The best.
Byrne is a favorite artist
I would love to see John Byrne return to Marvel or better yet The X-Men
Even more better yet, the Fantastic Four.
@LOL? Yeah, screw Captain Canuck! I would love the return of Guardian and the true Alpha Flight.
I've always loved his art style. Big John Buscema is my all time favorite artist, then comes Lee, Campbell, and McFarland. Keep forgetting to put Byrne on my list. He definitely needs to come back.
UXM is my favorite and what I focus on, but Buscema's run on Avengers is something that I'm going to shoot for asap. ;}
John Buscema has no equal.
I want to see him return to Fantastic Four. I recommend his FF run to anyone reading this.
Amazing run! 2nd only to Kirby/Lee!
Agreed. It blows my mind that those classic Byrne FF's aren't worth a ton more than they are! People are willing to fork out a ton for stupid modern variants, but awesome stuff like that goes for pennies? At least his run on Uncanny X-men are at prices worthy of their greatness.
@@MakThaNife Amen. The amount of variant covers Marvel pumps out is ridiculous these days. Half of them aren't even worth it.
Only John Byrne can save the fantastic four, its terrible that his run ended in 1986. The only other decent run was Tom Defalco and Paul Ryan.
I want more She-Hulk...there I said it
braylon randle : DITTO.
How awesome was her spirit?? But can Byrne still be sharp at that humour? What a babe tho
Hell yeah. I love his run on Shulkie. The only problem I ever had with it is how super model skinny he draws her. She's a Hulk, for gods' sake.
Sensational She-Hulk was awesome. You'll never see a comic like that these days lol. Way too sexy for the modern politics.
Paul Polpiboon I remember when I read JB’s She-Hulk, there were times when I was literally laughing out loud!!!
She-Hulk was great. Good times!
PLEASE GOD, LET BYRNE COME BACK TO MARVEL!!!!!
Are there any updates on JB’s spec X-Men Story?
John Byrne is by far one my favorite creators. Marvel make this happen.!
The state Marvel is in now, this is the PERFECT time for Byrne to return!
Always the pioneer! The characters fell out of the pencil, they were always there. Love it
Exactly. At 58 years of age..I believe even I would start buying "NEW" comics again.
Marvel has improved with a few of their new runs this year imo.
Do you understand that the majority of people who ENJOYED Byrne and liked his comics have RETIRED from the hobby now over the past decade because they were upset at the direction the comics industry went in and that they WERE TOLD to their faces that the industry didn't need their patronage anymore?

We need a hero now, more than ever
watching him talk, he seems really cool and refreshing compared to how most modern creators are
the industry has been on its deathbed for more than 20 years, largely due to modern creators and the changing of business practices. CartoonMan! Well that and people don't read things anymore
Issue v1 138 (1980) was the best recap of a series. It's a classic and worth reading.
Yes, we need Byrne now (and any time)
For people watching this after the fact, a deal with Marvel for this project did not happen, so John has been “publishing” the issues on his website forum (in the Fan Fic section) a page per day for quite a long time now. I have those 12 issues collected. Do you know if there'll be more?
Marvel needs Byrne more than Byrne needs Marvel.
"Nothing but imaginary stories"
YES PLEASE
Do it John!
Danger Unlimited needs to come back. The greatest non-FF family superhero book. After John continued the Next Men, I really thought he would return to Danger Unlimited.
I love the Next Men!!! That would be great if he returned to Danger Unlimited and Babe universe.
please john byrne come back to comics!!!
John is my all time favorite writer and artist
One of the greatest to ever pick up a pencil. Him and Bernie were were two of my favorites from my childhood...
I was at John Byrne table in Boston when when this happened!
It was so much fun to meet him.
I’d love to see him at a convention. I’m surprised to hear that he was at the Boston Convention. He doesn’t do many of them. What year did he do the Boston convention?
Anything would be better then what marvel puts out now
I love this guy! What a time warp!!!
If this does happen, I'd love to see Byrne also do a set of mini-series: X-Men, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, She-Hulk, and Avengers. 5 issues each, would take about two years to completion if he did them all back-to-back (or 4 issues each with a one-month break in between - - the man's gotta rest!) His X-Men are the absolute best.
They should put Byrne in complete charge of Marvel and fire everyone currently there.
His art and writing ability is better than anyone currently at marvel.
For the love of The Old Gods let there be more John Byrne interviews!
Shout out to the interviewer. Excellent questions and engagement. Affable and knowledgeable.
There better be more interview!!!
I was with him for about an hour. There's MUCH more of the interview that will be posted a bit further down the road.
Thank you!!!! you've been doing some great comic book stuff! Sorry for being so direct
Samuel Barden nP. Direct is always better
Thanks for this interview. Byrne seems in a good place. And it's kind of interesting how even his voice sounds different somehow -- more mellow? -- from when he was younger.

Judging from those pages, he’s as good as ever.
LOVE this guy! HUGE Byrne fan!
Another wonderful interview, what pleasing personality.
He needs to be commissioned to finish his X-Men: The Hidden Years series
Only if his best inker Terry Austin comes back too!
I would've loved to have seen this published. It's a shame Marvel didn't pick it up.
I'd love to see Byrne take up his First Line series again. I personally enjoyed it.
Reprinting the untold X-men as issue 0! Yes and yes. I would definitely check this book out at the very least pick up the trade book.
Please Marvel. The World need John Byrne back to the X-men. It will be AWESOME!!!
"Elseworld"?! It's called a What-If.
I’d love for John Byrne to return and resume X-Men Hidden Years
It would be so cool if JB could return and continue with X-Men: Hidden Years Vol. 2.
My favorite artist
It’s October 12, 2019. Where are the books?

So i guess Byrne didn't come back.
Byrne made me go from an X-men fan to an X-Men fan for life.
he should go back to xmen and maybe ff4 as well.
!!BYRNE!!!
Post Crisis Superman writer your the besr sir
Did he do it !!?
I would absolutely love to see Byrne come back to the X-Men, but I don’t think the SJW occupied Marvel would like to see him come back.
This would be unbelievably cool!
Marvel - make this happen and take my money...;-)
Marvel, PLEASE, move forward with this new John Byrne/X-Men content. Then, shut up and TAKE MY MONEY!!
I don’t think at this point this is going to happen sadly. But you never know!
I would have bought these comics religiously if it happened I don't think it ever did
Did fans support the X-Men Hidden Years which was his previous return??? I recall the book being cancelled pretty quicky despite folks yearning for Byrne to return.
Probably because it wasn’t very good.
Everyone can’t be Alan Davis.
I love John bryne
It would be cool if he could be involved in the movies.
I agree! I bet he has so many incredible stories that he can put on the screen for all of us to enjoy!
Byrne, love the guy.
Marvel, hire John Byrne NOW!!!!!!
Best comic artist of all time except for Kirby. I have almost every issue Byrne has ever done and will never let them go. I would buy anything he chooses to do. Marvel would be stupid not to every publish his X-men pages or any other pages.

agree with captainfabulous

Hope hope
Where can you even buy a comic book today? There are no more local candy stores? Life sux :(
He already said nope back in 1997
With the state that Marvel is in now, making it nothing but imaginary by great creators from the past is the only way to save it.
Not a fan of modern Byrne art but maybe I’m in the minority
If you haven't already, have a look at his X-Men Elsewhen on his forum. The art is amazing. He's decided not to go with Marvel with this and has instead gifted it to fans - in sequence, a page a day - for free.
Even the Beatles got back together(sort of): Never say never!
Did this turn into an actual book?
Why exactly would anyone think it was a reprint? Does Byrne really think readers are that stupid?
awesome
WOW THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can he tell a better Star Wars sequel story?
He's John Byrne. Of course he can
Michael Wilson ^ Tongue in cheek.
Comics have to move FORWARD. Nostalgic trips into the past are NOT going to grab new readers.
YESSSSS!!!!!
Marvel needs heroes. They are not much more than progressive npc propaganda anymore and it really breaks my heart.
Hi John 😏💯❤🔥☝
Never happened

We’ve already seen Jean Grey not die from the Dark Phoenix Saga due to the retcon for Cyclops’ character assassination...I mean X-Factor.
Ha ha ha, he's going to have to turn Scott Summer into Bruce Transgender and so on.
Hey, good for you, man! You won the Most Moronic Comment award on a Marvel RUclips video! Congratulations. With how dense and fucking retarded comment sections on vids about Marvel always are, that's quite the accomplishment.
