I saw one a man Jenson's ship. I come up and why are you Facebook page? If looked fantastic. I mean, I did my research and neighbour brilliant. Thanks for the comment.
Just watched 3 of your videos and you remind me of a younger me. I started off on my own at 21 back in the late 90's and still going strong today. Your enthusiasm shows through and this is what will take you far. Gather as much horticultural knowledge as you can along the way. As regards winter work, if you can find a few larger gardens these will help to sustain you through the dormant months. To also keep me going through the winter I found a lot of work 'topping' conifers, reducing hedges and branched out into small tree work. For this invest in some larger decent step ladders. You seem to have your head screwed on so I wont bother to bore you with endless advice, you'll figure most of it out as you go along, but here's one or two bits you may not have tgought about already.... Buy the best tools you can afford. It works out better value for money in the long run, you cant go far wrong with Stihl. Buy a cap. It'll keep the sun/rain out off your face and reduce the amount of shit that gets in your eyes when your facing up tall hedges. Consider a bigger van. Ive found a transit van size to be ideal. You can get move waste in the back if necessary and it saves you time travelling back and forwards tipping. As they say, time is money. If you get yourself a set of regular customers in the same area, ideally neighboirs in the same roads, then this will save you a lot of time travelling. It may be worth printing some leaflets out and dropping them in the areas where you already have work and would like more in that area. Although leaflets only give you about a 2-4% return. Once you get established youll be turning them down. Trust me.. I still get asked all the time but have to turnit down. Keep up the good work mate and if you mangaed to survive last summer's and this winter's terrible weather the comming years should get easier.
Harley you’ve come on so far mate I’m really proud of you buddy Those wise words of wisdom well help other newbies getting into our industry Well done fella I might be down your way this weekend Saturday and Sunday 🍺 let me know if your free might see if I can get mr cheese have youtubers meet up Love your channel mate proud that all your hard work is paying off you deserve it
Thanks you very much, Pete. I appreciate the kind words. I really do push myself every day for my business and my RUclips channel. I've got some big goals this year. A meet-up would be mint. it would be great to finally meet you lot!
Great stuff I've been in and out of trying to start up my own garden maintenance business, but life keeps getting in the way! It's good to see others doing well. Keep it up!! 💯
It has definitely been a very challenging experience. It would definitely be even more challenging if I was a bit older and had real responsibilities. I'm really lucky. The fact I started young and my only responsibilities are my business overheads pretty much.
A fantastic job. As lots of people have commented, you’d make your life so much easier with a chipper. Not half as much bulk to move, plus you could leave the chips on-site as mulch or drop it off at an allotment site as they cry out for such stuff. Win-win with do disposal fees. Keep up the great work and positive attitude.
Great video mate. I spent the last 35 years in IT with the last 18 in the NHS. On your points about enjoying it, I absolutely love it such a sense of achievement. I started in earnest the beginning of the year so in the winter and there is so much work out there with most of mine being word of mouth. I don’t charge enough but that is getting sorted but what I really struggle with is where to take waste as all the tips in Oxfordshire seem to be council and no commercial waste. Looking forward to the next vid chap, keep up the good work and working solo is far simpler 😉
Thank you very much mate. And yes, you definitely have to love what you do. And the waste can't be a bit of a nightmare. I guess it's a struggle for all of us.
I know, as soon as this big job is done, I feel like i'm gonna go and get one. A chipper will be like the backpack. Blur, it will be a true game changer for me. I've tried my hand at trying to get a sponsor, but I knew that was a bit of a long shot no one wants to send me one. (Understandably) 😅.
get yourself a chipper shredder bud it will save even more time because you wont be paying tip prices you could also sell the chippings and make some extra money
Yes, I am considering a similar option. They appear to be of exceptional quality. However, I am undecided about which one to choose. Additionally, I will need to wait a while to see if one becomes available on the used market.
@@HDGardenCare I’d recommend something in the middle between big and small! You want something that will be able to help out on the bigger stuff like smaller trees and stuff! I have the cobra CHIP650L! Brill bit of kit! Will eat up the bigger branches! Will put away stuff up to 3.5 inch
I invested in the Forest Master mulcher last year and its a beast. A bit pricey at £600 but its small and can chew through a lot of material in next to no time at all. I usually charge the client a fixed day rate for the chipper hire. Claws some of that initial cost back. 👍
Consider investing in a powered pole saw, eithier petrol or battery. This sort of job it would have saved you a number of hours, same as the laurel you cut a few weeks back. I have a husquvarna 530ipt5 this is the telescopic one with 9amp batteries. It is expensive but saves significant amounts of time.
Couldn't agree more with this. I've got the long reach Husqvarna pole saw and a 10 foot Henchman tripod ladder and they have hugely increased the amount of tree work I can do as I'm not a climber and never will be!
You forgot to mention nasty customers ,ive meet a few in my time as a gardener .I went to do a quote for lady and when i turned up she said i want my drive dug up ! i said i dont do that type of work to which she replied “what sort of gardener are you then “ ? I replied the sort that doesnt dig up driveways ! Nice to meet you bye 😂
I've had a similar experience with a very rude old man. Let's just say I walked out that gate quicker than I walked in 😂 Thank you for sharing and thanks for the comment!
Thank you for such a constructive advice, one question - how do you deal with toilet facilities? I guess you might not have straight access to the toliet
don't work yourself too hard mate, I'm 36, started 12 years ago, but now my back is knackered and doing anything aggravates it/debilitating, I'll always be self-employed gardener/I love it, but now needing more and more help from younger chaps, take care
This is very subjective on individual and a set business. Everyone's overheads are different and everyone's living expenses are different so everyone charges a different amount. So I don't think it would be a valid or fair thing to do.
Always the same when you're in a hurry literally everything is stacked against you 🤣 I'd say always expect the waste to be MORE than what you think and plan for that eventuality
2 more gold nuggets I'd have told the younger me. Never discuss money on the spot with a customer always say you'll get it over to them in writing/email. Rule no. 2 never say yes to a new job when they pitch it to you that they are "having a party and need it done by such and such a date" it is just extra pressure on yourself, you don't know them they could be non payers or knock you down and they definitely aren't interested in ongoing maintenance despite what they might tell you, don't be hoodwinked.
This will definitely be the next bit of equipment I invest in for sure. Just in the past two or three months, there have been so many occasions that it would come in useful. Thanks for the comment
No, however, this work was done for a family member 😉... on a serious note I am looking to get a ticket this year or next year. There's a few third party companies that im looking at. Im just not sure who to go with and when to pull the trigger as it's a big investment.
great positive attitude, well done kid, hope a lot of success comes your way. keep positive
What a brilliant comment. Thank you very much.
I went self-employed 12 years ago, after working for gardening companies. Best thing i ever did! Keep going young chap, and good luck to you!!
Thank you very much, mate. Really inspiring. Best of luck. I'm thank you for the comment.
We run a Janson chipper, Its a fantastic small machine. Idea for garden maintenance. The very best to you for the future, Garry Solihull

Glad to hear it! I really hope you enjoyed.
Great job you work hard all the best for the future.
Thank you so much 😀 This really means a lot.
Nice job as usual. You need to get a chipper ASAP mate, will soon pay for itself. Keep up the good work.

I'm on the hunt for a cheap one. I'm too tight to buy a new one 🤣.

Small Crytec chipper the 850 one or the terminator from Crytec you can tow
Yes, that is one of the options on definitely looking at.
Ideal for these jobs 👌
I’ve been looking at the cobra chipper might be worth a look when you are free
I'm eager to get a chipper, its definable an essential to have.
@@HDGardenCare could sell the chipping on as well
Nice vid bud! Really wanna get a chipper pall! Saves sooo much time and you’d get all the waste in all that bag!
I know, and a chipper will be my next big investment. I'm just not sure what size to go for...

Yes i recenly faced burnout hence the lack of recent post however a video is on it way!
A never great job 👍
Thank you. Legend.
Invest in a small chipper to reduce the amount of waste
There's definitely will be one of my next big investments. Thank you for the suggestion.
How do you decide how much to charge when you’re starting out?
could you do a rough estimate on how much you earn and spend on these jobs?
very nice videos

Top man.
Where do you find these places to take big loads? What do you look for?
Sorry, i'm not quite sure what you're asking?
@@HDGardenCare sorry just what do I search for locally, recycling centres or commercial waste disposal, green waste disposal etc?
Biggest advice - go easy, don't get injured. Don't chase money, keep your spending down. Put little into a pension each month.
Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it!
That's hard arse work on your own.
It definitely is. But I'll just push through. 💯
Try and invest in a decent chipper, it would be a game changed for you!
It definitely would be a life of running definitely on the cards.

This is a great comment. Ill definitely be on the phone as I've got four or five fisheries very locally to me. It's worth a phone call at least.
have you got your chainsaw license
