Before he was Plan B, a young man called Ben Drew was growing up in London’s Forest Gate. With a guitar and the music of Smokey Robinson to work with, Ben set about becoming what he is today: a chronicler of our times.
In this enthralling interview with James O’Brien, Ben shares his story, a story that is inextricably tied to his music, experiencing violence at home from a young age and losing friends to crack and heroin, and how he channelled those stories into songs, breaking into the mainstream, and coming home to share the positive power of music in the community that shaped him.

I got into Plan B about 10 years ago when I was bringing up my son in London. "That's the mentality of kids today" is a stonking line. Can hardly believe his current output - it too is stonking!!!
take it from someone who listened to his 1st album many moons ago he's always been ahead of his time musically thinking beyond his scope putting the real people 1st big up ben keep doing what you love and knocking down doors. ps James thats the quietest I've ever herd you .... and can you get ben back for a part 2 .
Great interview. Ben Drew is testament to how adversity can help you in the long run, as long as you put the effort in.
Thanks for the feedback Chris! We appreciate it
is this james obrine?
This has just blown me away, I love how Ben uses his English literature just has manual speaking, i’ve learnt a lot from this person,. What an Artist
Amazing interview. Ben is a smart and talented dude
Only just seen this...amazing chat..loved it..thanks x
I don’t have any particular views on this interviewer other than to say that I don’t think I’ve heard Plan B speak for so long in an interview (and so well) and so I’m glad the interviewer enabled that.
I don't know. Who he is but I understand people's. Hostility to him he is so insecure when the interviewee is clairfiying something like its an attack on. Him what little bitch of a man, I'm. Middle class I guess but I can see why working class or northerners see him as a posh bellends cus he acts entitled
@@Sidowse he was born rich self congratulatory bloke in the Media, no
@@Sidowse yeah look that was aload od shit, the guy acts entitled there is strike 1, then you connect that with the fact he seems to come from a well to do background and uses working class culture as his source of income, thats not prejudice, prejudice would be purely saying he talks posh so i hate him, i didnt do that i dont agree with prejudice but we are allowed to judge by peoples chracteristcs if we want, your attitude is what allows grooming gangs exist, because no1 is alowwed to complain about any1 else,
@@Sidowse you keep taking what I say out of context, he acted entitled and unhumble in the interview, despite having skill as an interviewer which he has built a career on, his ego showed and he didn't want to be open as he could to his interviewee because his own ego got in the way.... His background probably is the cause for this as he clearly is very conscious of status in terms of his own public image, this show he is not comfortable with his own background and is insecure, that's not everyone else's problem it is his, insecurity can happen at both ends of the socio economic scale but criticism is valid at both ends, your point is a blanket defence on an irrelevant subject, his interview skills are good, his own public image is bad, he is insecure and doesn't know what he really wants to say, he just wants to be a contrarian because he is insecure, you are so blinkered please stop.
@@Rg-es9kv Your grammar is terrible, what the hell are you trying to say?
Great interview!!!
That point about being a minority as a working class white British kid in school and its psychological and behavioral effects is something that anyone who shared that experience well resonate with and this is the first time I think I've ever seen it openly spoken about without overly racializing and politicising it, and it is an issue that definitely needs attention than it's getting.
This is an excellent interview, Ben is perfectly placed to discuss these issues. Bright guy 👏🏻
He's a cracking young man, Ben Drew, certainly a good example for those with similar backgrounds and even for those without.
not that young....
I love your interviews, James. You are excellent at putting people at ease. I have enjoyed every single one of them and always look forward to the next.
OYA1100 If you think he is so wonderful, listen to him on LBC, not for long though as he is a total nob
I don't listen to him much on LBC because that , I think, is a Zionist owned radio stationed. because he has to support his family and, so, has to go along with their agenda. All mainstream media is owned by the PTW and that is why you shouldn't listen to them or read their newspapers. I don't agree the interview with Ben would have gone wrong. Listen to all of them, and you will see. Watch it again!
James obrien is a grade A twat
Why do you say that?
OYA, seriously?
Even if your anti semitic views on the station's owner is correct, you should ignore that and listen.
He's tied by nobody. And to put your anti semetic views at ease, he is one of the strongest on LBC to condemn Israel when they have another fit on Palestinians, very much so last week.
He even shot down Jewish people couple of weeks ago who were ringing to complain about Corbyn.
Give him a listen in lbc, it's fun and informative. 👍
I’m surprised at how soft spoken and shy Ben is off stage.
His speaking voice is so different too, somewhat gravelly and lower than his singing voice.
Great interview
Was watching an interview with James o b and he mentioned his interviews / podcasts with Akala and plan b I'd seen the akala one but had no idea he sat down with plan b ! What an insightful chat I been a fan of plan b since the Beginning when I first heard sick 2 def on a run the road compilation 2005 times . Where ever you are mate please drop some more music
I like the lad..very talented and creative
On the fringe of my being aged 6 yrs old - along with Apollo11 , was Mother swinging one of those ( by today’s’ standards ) giant red carpet sweepers straight across my fathers’ head & leaving a red scrape down the wallpaper - having confirmed his ‘ indiscretion’ ...Neither of those two would have hurt anybody’s feelings for 99.9 % of their lives . It’s easy to sneer 😕
Legend 💪
I like this geezer, seems very grounded and genuine but ffs, it took five minutes of bollocks to reveal that the B in Plan B stood for Ben lol.
Skin from Skunk Anasie and Plan B would be a lyrical force.
Very cool itw, good job!
Zane Lowe said on his last Radio one show. That Plan B is one of the greatest British musicians of the last 25 years. He is spot on
He never said that.
@@mistereuro yes he did
ftr i would love an acoustic plan b album fr...
'how should I address you?'. He has a wonderful way at putting the interview at ease, even though the interviewers is trying to be a prick, but not really. Its like he had to be a bit of a git but doesn't understand why, and then, in that laid back style....(the way he's dressed though, he looks like he could be in a Hitchcock film set in England).
If Ben had stayed too long, this interview could have gone wrong.
Well, I did wonder why he never once looked him in the eye.
What you mean ?
Geordie Kev See Plan B Stay too long
OYA1100 you must have watched a different interview because he can clearly be seen to look him in the eye several times.
Plan B looks like a plan D
There should be more role models like plan b for the kids of today!
Wow, it took him 7 mins to explain how he chose his rap name...
Looking a lot different hope hes well
Just a hat n a jacket...other than that looks n sounds identical
His lost a lot of weight
