      I am enjoying your videos and I watched your Gowing a Greener World in the hopes of one day having a garden of my own. I'm finally in that place, up in Stokes County.
      I've started with your "no till" video. I'm a senior so tilling wasn't really an option for me. Lol. Lots of cardboard, staw and I've started a small compost bin. 🤞 I'll be ready to start next spring. Ty for the education.

    It must have been difficult to not say anything Joe! So jealous of how organised and stocked your greenhouse is. What temp is your heat mat set at for lettuce? I know they are a bit sensitive to temp. Hope you had a lovely Christmas and look forward to more from you in 2024.

    • @joegardenerTV
      @joegardenerTV  Год назад +1

      Haha. Just a bit. But actually I like it because I don’t have to worry about any re-takes due to flubbed lines. 😂.
      The heat mats are not on a separate thermostat but they average 75 degrees. I do have them on a timer though to only come on at night. Lettuce seed doesn’t germinate over 80 degrees soil temp and in the daytime the ambient temp can exceed that, so I use the mats to supple at the heat once the temps fall at night. I will be experimenting a lot with this.

    You don't pre-wet your soil mix? Is there a reason you prefer to water after sowing the seeds?

    • @joegardenerTV
      @joegardenerTV  Год назад +4

      If you saw the scene of how quickly the water soaked into the soil mix, there is no need to presoak it. The soil mix I use has a wetting agent added to the mix so the water is freely and quickly absorbed into the soil. You often find this in professional soil mixes such as the Promix BX that I use. However, it is rarely added to consumer grade, off-the-shelf products. In those cases, presoaking is sometimes about the only way the water will continue to be absorbed after you sow the seed.

  • @davidhaley1776
    @davidhaley1776 Год назад +2

    Morning Joe. Did you get your promix from Amazon?

    • @joegardenerTV
      @joegardenerTV  Год назад +1

      Morning! You can get it from Amazon. Here's my link for exactly that same product and size: amzn.to/3GZ5buQ
      If you have access to an Ace Hardware near you, you should be able to order online and get it shipped to your local store. The price is cheaper at Ace so that would be my first choice. Good luck. I've been using that Promix BX for years. Love it!

    Did you only start lettuce or did you do other cold hardy veggies too?
    Will you be growing the plants in the greenhouse once you up-pot them, or under hoops in your raised beds?

    • @joegardenerTV
      @joegardenerTV  Год назад

      I am planning on doing both. And I think the ones in the greenhouse will do better since it won't get exposure to the winds and extra cold outside.

    Do you pack down the seed starting mix in the seed tray once you add it?

    • @joegardenerTV
      @joegardenerTV  11 месяцев назад

      Only lightly after I sow the seed. I do I gentle press for good seed to soil contact and to make a bit more room for top dressing.

  • @AmsNl2BcnEs
    @AmsNl2BcnEs 11 месяцев назад

    This video would really be good if had voiceover explaining the compost mixes and high microbe supplement, why A selected over B, etc. It just feels too quiet. Not sure why using a seed dispenser at 3:30 as these always felt a bit of a gimmick for new gardeners, they only really seem to work if you have seed mixed together of different sizes.

    • @joegardenerTV
      @joegardenerTV  11 месяцев назад

      Love my seed dispenser! 🤷‍♂️

  • @AmsNl2BcnEs
    @AmsNl2BcnEs 11 месяцев назад

    3:46 Noooo I can’t believe these were watered from above with a normal watering can, this will totally shuffle the seeds around and probably wash some right off the soil. Small seeds should be watered from below to prevent this.

    • @joegardenerTV
      @joegardenerTV  11 месяцев назад

      I hear where you’re coming from but the soil I use has a wetting agent which immediately absorbs the water, and I always do it in the kitchen sink using a gentler spray. Ive been doing it this way for a long time and this does not happen with my technique. Most off the shelf seed starting mixes don’t have the wetting agent and yes, the water pools on top and seeds can easily float away. But this is not the case with what I use. For filming this example, that is not my standard approach to do it outside with a hose (so yes, def could have provided a better example of that part of the process to avoid confusion.) 👍
