Welcome! Today I wanted to walk you through my planting plan for under the oak tree garden bed. It is important to me to take care of this old oak and I didn’t want anything I planted under or around it to harm the tree! Come with me as I discuss how I decided on the plan for this interesting garden bed! 🌳 Enjoy!

This bed is going to be gorgeous! I have a HUGE live oak tree behind my fence on city property. I love the shade it provides. I started watering it extra thinking it needs it 😦 Glad you shared your oak story! I’m going to stop and probably move my fence line drip. I love that tree and would be devastated if it died. Thanks again Janey!

Great video! Thank you for the link to the California Oak Foundation information. I live in Valley Springs, Ca which is also in zone 9b. Last year I planted 21 California native plants on the grassy/oak slope behind my house. A rodent ate the roots of one of them but, happily I still have 20 plants left. I give them 2 gallons of water every two weeks with a watering can and they do just fine. I too look forward to the natives needing no supplemental water (or at least very little). Eventually I want to have the entire area covered with plants that want to be there. The information from the COF will really help me choose the right plants!

I think you did a wonderful job in your research on what to plant under the tree. I think me included do not think about planting under a tree needs. Your graph layout was more professionally done then what my husband and I got from a landscape professional. Yours is readable. We have had several oaks in our area fell over on the golf courses due to watering every day, so you were smart in doing your homework and pass experience. Every thing looks gorgeous in the plants and flower color. You might have more people walking by and traveling cars then you want, just because of the beautiful corner. Your neighbor should be very happy in your choices. Stay Safe and shop on for the flowers now.

Hi Janey. I am SO thrilled to have found your channel! 😀 I too live in the Sacramento area on a 1/2 acre property. Thank you so much for the detailed information on planting around our California Oaks. We have many oak trees surrounding the perimeter of our property and sadly they only live amongst the weeds at the moment. Our neighbors 100 year old oak tree is so large, it overhangs the street and into the oaks in my yard. Its really beautiful! We are only 2 years into trying to clean up the property and beautify it again, which as you know is a massive task especially in our very hot & dry climate. I can't thank you enough for the inspiration to help me make these areas more beautiful for all of my neighbors to enjoy too. I am very excited to see your Oak tree project completed. Keep the inspiration coming! Be blessed!

As a follow Californian, I'm very happy for your drought tolerant plant selections. I can tell you that the Cleveland sage does get to 5 ft all around. After the flower blooms, you will have to trim it back. I just did mine this past weekend. Also, they require FULL sun. and the Mexican salvia that you mentioned too. I'm in my 3rd year of planting them this yr, so I only water them once a month during summer. It's gonna look AWeSOME! Look alsos for ceonothus, they bloom blueish -purple.👌🌴🌸🌵🌞

There are so many different sizes/growth habits and bloom colors of native California ceanothus! They are also sometimes called California Lilac. There’s a very low growing one with deep blue-violet-purple blooms that I just love. I had one that didn’t make it past a year, but I plan on trying it again in a different spot in our front garden re-do.

Well, you are off to a great start with those Plumbago! Once you get past the first year, they will love you more, not to water often! 😄
That's a beautiful garden plan! I can't wait to see it in execution! Hopefully you don't have difficulty digging with roots! Come on Power Planter! She needs an auger!
The Butterfly variety of pincushion is perennial for me, 8b Texas. I believe they are shorter term perennial though (3 yrs?). That's about how long I've had mine and I'm starting to find the middle of the plants are dying off.

I admire all of the research you did to ensure the plants you select will be right for you, the tree, and the neighbor. The plans, I thought, looked very professionally done!! The flowers you selected are varieties I have used here in New England -- pincushion flower, ferns, salvia, and my "go-to" favorite lilyturf. I've never seen salvia grow that large, but it should be a wonderful addition to the new garden.

Beautiful plans, and yes it's a good idea to water the oak tree during a drought. A big oak tree dropped a limb during a drought one year here next to our driveway. It was a big healthy limb! I couldn't understand why it would drop a healthy limb like that. So I did some reach search and found out oak trees will sometimes drop a limb during a drought to preserve the rest of the tree.

I had that happen with the sprinkler system in the house we moved into. It sprayed towards one of three trees that were planted in like a vertical line across our yard. It ended up dying, and that is what we believed happened to it as well. Now I’m having a hard time finding the same kind of tree to replace it. Plus, it gave us much needed shade as it was the one that was closest to our house. ☹️

Consider at least 2 additional white bloomers-having only 1 looks like a mistake, having at least 3 looks like a plan.
