If you’re thinking of doing London to Paris I’ve linked the routes I put together in the description. Let me know if you’re thinking of doing it, or if you have any questions! ✌🏼 Ps. Should I make this my first and last RUclips video or would you want to see more adventures!? 👀
I did London to Paris in 2022 with Global Adventure Challenge. Beginning from Croydon, we went to Dover (over the North Downs, VERY hilly!), across the Channel to Calais and that was Day 1, 86 miles. From Calais to Amiens was day 2, 103 miles of lovely French roads (like glass compared to our potholed shockers). Day three was from Amiens to Chantilly, the lovely Hotel Mercure (the glitziest hotel a peasant like me was ever in), 63 miles for the day. Day 4 took us into Paris (and I thought London motorists were bad!). Rode down part of the Champs Elysee, met up in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower for the medal celebration, and then overnighted in Novotel Paris. 40 miles. Day 5 was a sightseeing day until we caught the Eurostar for the journey home. If they had asked for volunteers to cycle all the way home again I would have been at the front of the queue. By the way, at the time I was 74 years old. The best thing I have done in my life.😁
This sounds like an incredible trip… A core life memory indeed! You took the serious route… My route was a bit of a ‘freestyle’ bastardised from various things I’d seen. I can imagine the north downs made for a brutal day - I found London to Newhaven tough enough! Well done to you for staying active in your 70’s. I find excuses in my 30’s but I know the older I get the more important it is! Are you still cycling now? I need to plan another bike adventure soon.
Bravo Grant! Fun to see you in France (I'm a Canadian living in France). I thought I could shed some light on some of your questions: Gisors is pronounced with a soft G, which we don't really use in English, but like a French J (Je) : Jeez-or. You were at a normal McDonald's, but many of them also include McCafés, meaning there's a coffee counter with more coffee drink options as well as sweets like macarons, muffins, pastries, etc. If you eat in at a fast-food restaurant, they're no longer allowed to use throw away containers, hence the plastic fry container and real glass. They're trying to cut down on waste. Hope you're recovering nicely from your adventure!
Amazing well done !! :) Great video, inspiring I'm about to go on my first solo bike travel next week so thanks for the video and a reminder to enjoy the rides ! :)
@@louisebremner7802Thanks Louise! 👊🏼 More vlogs definitely on the cards… waiting on an injury to heal then I can plan some more mad stuff to document 💪🏼
Absolutely loved this, mate. I know this video was 5 months ago now, so I'm not sure if you're thinking of doing more videos, but you absolutely should. My first proper video was my London to Paris ride in 2022 with my mate and it kickstarted my decision to make more videos. Did the ride again this year but with more friends, which made it so much easier. Chapeau on doing this on your own then. Tres Impressive. Was great to see how parts of your ride were so similar to ours too. Was like reliving both rides all over again. Defo looking forward to seeing more videos from you. 💪🏼
Thanks so much for this comment mate. Just checked out your content, great stuff! I’m definitely going to pick up the camera again too… had a torn tendon in my ankle that I’m recovering from but on the mend now so more adventures pending! 💪🏼
Enjoyed watching this! For a small channel, you've deffo got the minerals for the vlogging and quality filming 😬 Inspiring me to take on something like this 👌

Hey Grant, grateful for the video as thinking to do it in next few weeks. How were the roads on the gpx routes, i.e was there many busy roads? Also, how did you get back to London? Im not keen to cycle back but the eurostar have said you need to disassemble the bike and I obvs won't carry a bike box with me
@@nathanhampshire8283 you should definitely do it, great experience. The roads for the route I put together are awesome. Obviously coming out of London was busy, and day 3 heading into Paris was busy. But the bulk of the ride was beautiful roads. I was lucky enough that friends drove to Paris so we got the bike back in a car on the ferry. I met some lads out there that just wrapped their bikes in blankets/rope they bought out there for the train. That did the job!
@@grantmynott Thanks Grant for that, will take that on board and follow your gpx trail. Im torn atm between bringing my nice Canyon Aeroad or commuter Triban120 bike, will be staying at safe accomodations but which would you take? i.e did you feel safe on ferry and if you needed to nip into a shop etc?
@@nathanhampshire8283 I would take the bike you feel most comfortable on for long distances… I almost took my ‘winter bike’ but glad I decided to take my nice bike instead as it’s the one I put the most miles on. Never felt unsafe in terms of bike being on ferry / outside coffee shop etc. I brought a small bike lock with me too.
@@grantmynott Got it 👍 Yea my bikes worth 6000 so going to I'll have to weigh up if a small lock while in coffee shops etc on the way is solid enough. Rides way nicer than my 500 quid commuter triban bike lol
@@nathanhampshire8283 also, I’ve had a btwin, did a leg of the Tour de France on it… and it failed me. They’ve prob got way better than when I had one but I’m not sure they are made for touring / long rides. Also, the bike lock is just a deterrent… someone will take it if they really want to but when you’re touring you are never that far away from your bike. I was more worried about this in the planning than once I was doing it. The lock is just a deterrent, but made me feel better about leaving it on the odd occasion.
Not for this ride as it wasn’t for ‘training’ was just for fun. I did have my ‘Whoop’ strap on my wrist though as i wear it everyday and that did detect the activity and heart rate data.
Well done, you and Steph should do this together. Or cycle somewhere together, that would be great to see. Plus imagine all the food on the way, she would love it. I would love to do this. Did you find it difficult?
Thanks! We’ve got a cycling adventure lined up together so watch this space. I didn’t find it difficult because I put no pressure on myself to hit a certain time / pace… just took it steady and enjoyed it! 👌🏼you should definitely do it, great experience.
Not the official Avenue Verte route, no. Although there were large sections of it that were. It was a route I put together after doing quite a bit of research and I ended up being really happy with it for a 3 day trip.
Was fine when there wasn’t torrential rain lol. Would prefer disc brakes of course but I’ve ridden carbon wheels and rim brakes down Alpe d’huez at over 100kph when I weighed 94kg… so this wasn’t that hard on the bike / wheels. I was taking it very easy.
