Another useful video, thanks. I picked up a pair of AKG K550 reference headphones for £60 about 6 years ago and I don’t think I’d ever change. They have an amazingly wide and clear sound stage that I’ve never heard in any other headphones. They’re light and well-made and I’ve had no problems wearing them for six to eight hours at a time.

I'm just dabbling with garageband and recording and just trying to get my head around the basic functions. I have no ambition for anyone to ever hear what I record. I'm doing it just for my own benefit. I don't have a lot of money so I picked up a set of amazon basics studio headphones for £20. I'm sure that's hilarious to all the experts out there but I think they are actually pretty good and suit my budget setup perfectly. I'm a big believer that you shouldn't get caught up with gear envy. Just use what you have. The main thing is that you enjoy what you're doing. If you get more skilled they you can upgrade later
    Great video as usual!

As a ATH-m30x user myself, I can certainly vouch for them. I usually mix on them, then fine tune on my monitors (Eris 3.5) and I'm ready to master. True, they can get tiresome after a long session but it's better to take brakes often anyway because of ear fatigue so no big deal.

When I was 16 or 17 years old I bought my first Sennheiser, the famous HD 414. Every radio DJ had one these days. Light weight, on-ear, balanced sound. That was 50 years ago. I think I used it 25 years, and then I bought the Sennheiser HD 480, which I still use. I am very pleased with it. At this point I would not know with what I should replace it if it broke. Maybe the CB1? Thanks for making this video, and all your others ones!

Great vid. I’m just going to throw Sennheiser into the ring. I used their HD461 headphones as my main production headphones before upgrading to the ATH m50X headphones. These and the more expensive HD471s have now been discontinued and replaced with the near-identical HD200 PRO which cost around £50. Like a lot of headphones at this price point, they do trade a premium feel for good sound but I think we can agree that that is a pretty decent trade-off

    • @TheGaragebandGuide

@@TheGaragebandGuide amazing. They do suffer from the same wear that the M30Xs do but luckily everything is replaceable. I have used them to mix most of my most-recent songs. They just have a sound that I know and can trust. I have recently got some new headphones from Sennheiser to replace them for music-listening but I still use the M50Xs every day. They're a bargain.

I have been sidelined more than once because a pair of high dollar headphones had been rendered pretty much useless due to deterioration/cracking of the leather cushions. For this reason, I started shopping for a more affordable solution, and I ran across some J Lab on-ear headphones. They run about 20 bucks at Walmart, and if something happens to a pair, you don't shed a lot of tears from simply tossing them. My mastering engineer constantly praises the mixes I get when I use them...

I have low end Audio Tecnicas and they're good enough for me BUT - off topic question: Do you happen to know how to work around the problem with an iPad seeing the headpones as an external mic? It's only got the one USB C input and as soon as you plugin headphones (using a 3.5 audio to USB C adaptor) the iPad disables the internal mic. Any help would be appreciated.

@@TheGaragebandGuide Our hearing degrades starting in 30s - those little hair sensors the stereocilia start breaking off causing higher frequencies to be unhearable no matter how much you boost them so as the drivers and coils degrade in old cans (heat kills off drivers) it can match the degradation in our ears giving the false impression that those old cans are still good. Well, technically they are if they play all the frequencies that you can still hear. Take a simple online hearing test w/your best cans where you can click the frequencies up/down one cent at a time and you'll be SHOCKED at how low a frequency your cans cut off and you can't hear the tone. 🎶 👀

m20x's and m30x's are better for mixing than the m50x's, since the 20 and 30's have a more neutral sound, the 50x's have a light increase in lows and highs, get the 20s or 30s for mixing, whatever you can afford both are the best professional budget mixing headphones imo.
but get the 50x's for listening to professional music and movies and gaming and stuff if you want that, you can mix on them too but 20 and 30's will be more accurate.

    Hey Patrick!...
First, how I got these, if you've ever wondered whether people win in these contests you see all over, just by giving them your name and email address, they do, and I'm proof! The band "Flying Colors" did a promotion of their first tour in Europe, and partnered with Presonus, and had a sweepstakes for portable recording equipment, plus a (medium) T-shirt, Vinyl record, CD, DVD and Blu-ray of the selected live cuts, and from Presonus, an 8-Channel to firewire input, and device that could be the slider adjustments for each channel, and the HD-7 open back headphones.
As you can guess, I use the firewire input with GarageBand, but the new version with Big Sur won't work with it - yet (the jury is still out on that! It's why I keep my 10 year old iMac running High Sierra, which it DOES work!)
SO, here, the HD-7; I've been using them for everything since I got them, and there's a description you use in the video of "boring", which explains these pretty good! They don't have any boost characteristics, which makes them great for mixing. Now, I do also try master playbacks on a house system as well as my car, and so far, so good! Now, I notice your comments had recommended closed-back, and these are open, but so far feedback hasn't been an issue, and I also mean any leaking; perhaps it's because Ive just wanted to hear a reference level so it's not too loud, but so far haven't heard anything, BUT... the upper piece of faux leather has broken and they won't sit correctly, so Father's Day is next weekend, so let's see if I get what I asked for! This video definitely changed the wish list!
    Thanks!...

Get the Sony’s . I tried the Status and returned them, so much bass you can’t hear anything else - maybe ok if all you’re into is rap. The AT’s were ok but still muddy. The Sony’s are clear and real. If you listen to vocals or acoustic guitar these are the ones you want. If you listen to synths and beats all day, well, it doesn’t matter what you get because you’re not listening to real music anyway. 😎
