There’s not a single student who hasn’t at least CONSIDERED cheating on the exam this year, knowing how easy it is. Even if you knew you would never do it, even if you think cheating is a horrific offense, it’s unlikely that you haven’t thought about it or discussed it with a friend. If we take College Board at face value, what they did is incredibly concerning and wrong. If they saw students who were planning on cheating, it’s possible to check their tests afterwards to see if they actually did. Unlike Tom’s analogy of arresting someone before they commit a crime, there is no harm to anyone else by letting these students take the test and deleting their scores afterwards if they follow through with it. And if it’s a scare tactic, it’s almost just as concerning because of its implications. Very bad move from College Board in my opinion.

Question for you Tom: I had heard that even if they suspect you of cheating without evidence they will report you to any college you sign up for and basically end your career. Ya gotta take it from the cheater's angle:
If someone were to cheat on their exam, IF, and get away with it....well sir, you now have a person that has proven themselves, through a realistic, and proven approach, that they are not only Intelligent, but they are also intelligent enough to "Outsmart" the very institution that teaches us how to be smart...

As a student who has taken an AP Exam and did not consider cheating because of the consequences, I will leave this information for those who are considering cheating on specifically a STEM type AP exam and also a humanities exam in hope that this convinces you otherwise:
On May 12th I took the AP Calculus AB exam. I studied quite a lot, so the test was quite easy. Afterwards, I Face-Timed a group of my friends who also took the exam to discuss. Here's the information I received: There are AT LEAST 4 different versions of a STEM exam. To add on, each of these versions has a bunch of different sub-versions with different numbers. I have either video called or messaged over 40 people who took the AB exam, and while some of them had the same type of question (for examples, the coin problem), not one of them had the same numbers in their questions as me. My guess is of the four types of questions, each had over 25 versions with the numbers flipped around. Not only is cheating wrong, but College Board is making it extremely difficult (I honestly believed that the 45 minute time limit adds on to the difficultly of cheating). Sure, you can hire someone to take the test for you. That's an easy fix, right? Consider the consequences. I'm sure it would be even more severe if you do that, and you might not be able to go to college at all. Hell, some kid took other people's SATs and got arrested! Also, if you're in a humanities course and are thinking of calling a friend during the exam, why? It's a 45 minute essay. Cheating won't help unless someone is doing the work for you, but not only is that EXTREMELY risky but I believe it might be illegal. So, to sum it up, cheating is just not worth it. And I'm not saying that as a student who has a clean record and is always honest whenever taking an exam. I'm saying that as a student who's cheated on multiple tests that it's just not worth it. This isn't the SAT, it's an AP exam. Even if you get a 1, you don't have to submit your scores to colleges. Yes, it is very hard for college board to catch you. But the risk outweighs the reward by far. I'm taking AP US history on Friday, and I'm CONVINCED I'll get a 2. However, I won't cheat. If you fail, you fail. In the end it's not that big of a deal. Please, don't cheat. Don't ruin your life over a test that holds little value if you fail. Even if it means a lot, it's not worth it. Do your best, and if you fail, you fail.
Lmao if u made it hear after my 2 page rant thanks for reading, and good luck to all on APs.

Wouldn't be surprised if College Board pulls a fast one on exam day and adds an "agree to our terms and conditions" check box. It would have words to the effect of "we reserve the right to disqualify any score we suspect of cheating and you have no legal right appeal or challenge us in court." Check this box to proceed to the FRQ's. At that point most students will just check the box and take the test, thinking "I'm not gonna cheat so I got no worries." Well, what if you're twins who will be submitting exams from the same GPS location. Might look like cheating to the College Board. Too expensive to investigate every case, so they just arbitrarily cancel the scores without proving anything. That is probably their "secret security measure." They don't say you cheated, merely suspect, and cancel the score without appeal or investigation, they report nothing, and simply refund your money, and it's like you never tested.

As a college student, there is usually some sort of due process for cheating. If you are caught cheating, the prof gives you a 0 on the assignment and reports you to the committee and there is a literal court-style hearing. Cause cheating is really bad in college. However, there is a lot of condoned "cheating" a lot of profs will let you use the internet for online exams because the point of the exam isn't about how much stuff you can remember, it's about your understanding of the subject. But I think a lot of these exams are taken a lot more seriously than college exams, I've never had to unseal a test booklet in college. Cause I mean at the end of the day, if you didn't learn what you needed to learn it's your life that's gonna be affected.

We had uncovered several students different schemes with evidence and testimony to how they had planned it.
We couldn't go into names and did not go publicly into the detail of the method or scheme, and we didn't name publicly who did, but we proactively gave them an academic review and failed them for that assignment, based on the seriousness of their plan and how they had tried to execute it, as well as conspiring to convince others to.
We just put a warning out in case anyone had heard of the method, or if others had planned similar. All those who attempted were given a fair review but had "pled guilty" and forfeited those assignment points.

It's a scare tactic. I know College Board well, and I hate the College Board (mostly for other reasons). I graduated high school in 2019, therefore not taking AP exams, but they should know that this is what happens when AP exams are put online. People are going to cheat. I've cheated (not on College board tests) before. It's inevitable. You can reduce the amount of people doing it, but you can't completely clear it.

The College Board said they would be "checking social media" to find any students that cheat. It's hard to believe that they would have the ability to check the social media accounts of the more than one million students who take AP exams each year. It seems like they are trying to scare students a little too much for it to be realistic. I personally think that what they are saying about checking social media is untrue. However, I'm sure they will be running the responses through a series of detection software to prevent cheating, which is why it still wouldn't be a good idea.

Conspiracy requires multiple people(check) who plan to go through with the crime, in our analogy, cheating, (which is debatable, but here the burden of proof would most likely rest on the defendents), and requires an overt act towards furthering that goal after the conspiracy has been formed. In this case, exchanging phone numbers would count, or another form of communication, but continuing to joke about it would not.
