    Hey Chris .....I just started 2nd year and I'm from India and I haven't started step 1 prep yet.I have a weak base in first year subjects(especially physio and anat) . Should I take kaplan or BnB from the start of 2nd year or take it during dedicated phase of step 1 prep ? And also what would be the right time to take subscriptions like sketchy or bnb or pathoma, from the start or during step 1 prep ?I'm planning to take step 1 in the 3 rd year.

    • @ChrisQuelch
      @ChrisQuelch  2 года назад +6

      Hey Jassica! Ill give you what I did exactly. Start sketchy and pathoma right now, take your time and finish them both by the end of second year. Start of third year start Uworld practise questions and read kaplan to research your incorrect answers. Do 40 questions a day (v. hard if youre on cinical rotations but possible). Use bnb and dirty usmle for topics youre struggling with. Come back in a few months and let me know how its going with you! good luck 🚀

      I liked bnb to be honest, but first year undergraduate is very early to start USMLE prep. If you start a q-bank like USMLE Rx that might be helpful for you but tbh I would just focus on lectures until end of second year.

    What books do u use while watching BnB videos?

    • @ChrisQuelch
      @ChrisQuelch  2 года назад

      Hey Rana, you should watch my video on how to study for step 1. I go over my philosophy regarding books/writing notes. Essentially I prefer to make notes from the videos as flashcards (in anki), rather than study from books. It is a more active form of learning, and I remember the information better.

    • @ChrisQuelch
      @ChrisQuelch  2 года назад

      I wouldn't recommend using the kaplan books, or even first aid, if you have less than 6 months to study.

    Hey Chris......great video. I will be starting medicine in uk this jan, its a 4.5 year course.......so I believe it would be apt for me to take the usmle at the end of the 2nd year......what are ur suggestions on it. Also when is it the correct time for me to start preparing?......I thought it would be perfect if i could start as early as feb or march of 2021 i.e. as soon as i start medicine........And considering that the usmle step 1 is now pass/fail how much time is it worth spending on preparing for step 1. Also i heard from a couple of youtubers that it is not really the best option to start off with first aid with no real knowledge of medicine......so what would u suggest me to start with(which resource? )as a first year medic?
    I know i am asking these questions after a long time since u have posted this vid......but it would really help me a lot if u could answer these for me.

    • @ChrisQuelch
      @ChrisQuelch  2 года назад +2

      Hey Mohammed! First of all, congratulations on making it into medicine! Its a long road but one of the most rewarding careers out there. I admire that you’re thinking about the USMLE this early! I won’t lie to you, taking this exam as a UK student is very hard, as I’m sure you’re aware. You will have little to no support from fellow students, and you most likely won’t be given time off to take the exam, but if you keep perservering you can do it, believe me!

    • @ChrisQuelch
      @ChrisQuelch  2 года назад +1

      When should you take the USMLE?
      Most students take after they have completed their basic clinical studies. So the Summer before their clinical years. So if you have 3 years of basic science, you would take it the summer before 4th year. Why is this the case? Like you mentioned, you need a solid bedrock in the fundamentals (physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology etc.) to do well in this exam. The more time you have to ‘digest’ the information, the better you will do IMO. Fortunately if you focus on smashing your university exams you will have a food foundation to study for USMLE on.

    • @ChrisQuelch
      @ChrisQuelch  2 года назад +1

      When should you start preparing?
      I believe you should start as early as possible. I recommend getting a subscription to boards and beyond. It is an online video lecture series that will teach you everything you need to know. As you go to lectures, try and watch a certain amount of boards and beyond every day. So if you’re studying physio, watch the physio videos every day. I DO NOT recommend reading first aid and writing notes. It is a waste of time in my humble opinion 😊. First aid reads like a bloody dictionary, its completely useless if you haven’t allready studied the information. Sure first aid tells you everything you need to know, but it doesn’t tell you why things are the way they are.

    • @ChrisQuelch
      @ChrisQuelch  2 года назад +1

      How to remember what I’m learning?
      I recommend you watch my video on how to study for step 1 for details, but you should use anki flashcards to try and retain the information you’re learning over time. If you combine that with the cram fighter app to organise you’re studies, you should be golden.Unfortunately I don’t have time right now to make a tutorial right now on how to start off with anki and use it with BNB, but after I take my exam in January I will be making one, if you can wait that long haha!

    • @ChrisQuelch
      @ChrisQuelch  2 года назад +1

      Is it worth working hard for USMLE step 1?
      YES, 100% yes! Programme directors are just going to start using step 2CK, and guess what? The content in those two exams has a massive overlap! We know from the data that people who do well on step 1 smash step 2, and that’s exactly what you want!
      I hope I answered all your questions, it took me forever to write haha! Get subscribed if you don’t want to miss my videos on USMLE stuff for IMGs 😊

    I am in a 6 year medicine course currently in my first year and would like to start preparing for USMLE. I want to ground myself on the basic knowledge and foundations for Step 1, and a lot of people recommend Kaplan lecture notes. But your advice is to use Bnb instead?

    • @ChrisQuelch
      @ChrisQuelch  Год назад +3

      I only recommend Kaplan to people who have enough time to study it, more than two years. If you want to use it alongside your basic sciences that's how you should use it. But when you move over to serious prep in third year, you need higher yield resources like BnB.
