Worked on several of these with my dad and brother. We retrofitted new circuit breakers for the diesel generators. Everything was so dirty and full of metal dust it was amazing they even ran. Scary site if you ever see one grinding at night! Looked like hell itself coming for you.
sparks from a grinder have a high temperature, but have very little heat. They don't do much damage. It's like how sparks from a sparkler firework are super hot, but don't burn your skin.
Wow! First time I've ever seen a video like this. Most people wouldn't want to sacrifice a video camera to get this shot. Thanks for doing this and sharing.
One of the THE BEST railroad-related vids I've found in a while! Congrats on a nice job with this! So you say that all you did to keep the camera from being fried/cooked by the sparks was partially cover it with track ballast, besides it being in a protective case? I'm assuming it was a GoPro that you put in one of the protective cases made for them, and you then partially buried camera-in-case in the track ballast?
High quality and well balanced and easy way to make your own home are you and your family with a good one to watch and enjoy your summer vacation in new York city on a Saturday and a f*
Most wanted1 A LORAM rail grinder is a device to grind the rails back to their original shape to prevent accidents like derailing, usw. The sparks are caused by a rotating disc made from a durable material also known as a grinder :).
I actually saw one of these the other day. Unfortunately it was idle and not doing anything when I saw it but the rails were REALLY shiny so it had definitely ground them.
Barry: uh Josh why is the train doing flames? Josh: oh no that's just under glow just what some cars have Barry: oh ok I'll go on tracks and lie down Barry again ಠ_ಠ wtf is that
There's grinders attached to the bottom of the train that grinds the tracks, similar to how you sand a piece of wood with sandpaper to make it smooth, it just makes the tracks smooth to help remove any deformities in the track that may one day cause a train to derail
@@judgeady2391 I'm just surprised that it took 6 years for you to get your answer even though you probably already knew the answer within that timeframe already but oh well, if you did know then now you know again

Very interesting to see that they designed this to spray the sparks inward. I guess it's to prevent brush fires. In those videos that show the side view you can't see what's going on underneath so this was cool to see.
That’s kind of concerning if something like that caused a train to derail if it was travelling at a faster speed while grinding the railway with its wheels
Guys was a saw a rail grinder this video is so cool that I want to to that lol I like watching this so bad really im not kidding but did it break your camera first of all its a rail grinder it breaks glass
That was awesome. Passed a parked LORAM rig today as I was heading into town and I was like " What in the hell is that all about ?? ". Came back home later in the evening after dark and all the cars were brightly lit. So much so that the roadway that runs right alongside the railroad which is normally pitch black during the night time hours was fully illuminated. Not knowing what or who LORAM was I researched it on the internet once I got home. Turns out, the rig they have parked is there is their latest rail grinding system, the RG400.

What does the grinder do? Does it smoothen the rail tops?
BNSFRAILFAN77 Exactly.
It’s used to smooth the surface of the rail of any imperfections and leave the rail like it was before it had that rough surface
